I have only done sushi takeout from Bambu, so I can't speak to the atmosphere inside the restaurant, but my pick up experiences have been positive with my orders always ready to go. This place has the best quality sushi I have been able to find so far in the west end of the city. As such, you can expect that the prices reflect this. For my order of a California Roll (6 pcs), a Philadelphia Roll (8 pcs) and a Smoked Salmon Roll (6 pcs) to be shared between 2 people, my total came to $33 before tax and tip. I don't mind paying for good quality sushi though, but this is a treat every so often rather than a quick habit of a go-to takeout meal. The ingredients in the sushi are fresh and delicious plus the presentation is aesthetically pleasing. It would be so easy to keep eating more like at an All You Can Eat. I would give this place 5 stars if they had a few pre-selected takeout combination offerings for a good deal. read more

I booked a reservation for this restaurant. I came in a group of three on a saturday night and it was pretty busy so I would definitely recommend making a reservation. They had a $6 sangria special which I loved. All the food was very delicious, the only thing was the pad thai was a bit too sweet. I also found the sushi quite overpriced, i'm from out of town but this small sushi plate was $28. The server was extremely nice and made out evening wonderful! One restaurant I will never be coming too again. This was somewhere I enjoyed going however each time the quality has been going down and down but we gave a chance thinking the chef was changed but today was the limit. We found out today all the dishes we've normally been ordering were all made with shrimp paste which was shocking since we always also for clarify if the sauces used are vegan or not. The fried rice which normally is never an issue was salt less flavour less and had cold pieces of veggies. The waitresses even argued when we asked to get the dish re-fried. The Singapore vermicelli noodles were in the same boat of being cold once we got them. Only thing that was salvageable was the sweet potato sushi roll which was the star of the day. Went on a Sunday afternoon around 130. Place was empty which was unexpected. Again we get warm food...eggrolls we devoured but we sent the chicken fried rice back to be microwaved. We haven been to Bambu since COVID so we decided to try it again with some out of town guests. We dined on a Sunday evening and the food was just so-so. The place was certainly busy so the restaurant must still be very popular. The sushi was well presented but nothing special. The chow mein wa mediocre and we should have just skipped it. if you're looking for true Asian food, look elsewhere unless you're desperate. We were handed wrinkled and stained paper menus that were likely used by dozens of patrons before us. Our table was also sticky. They could do a better job with removing the "ick" factor. read more

My family and I had a late dinner at Bambu last night. We booked a reservation at 8:15pm. We were running a bit late so we called ahead and were told that the kitchen closes at 8:45. We arrived about 5 minutes late and were seated quickly. To her credit, our server didn't rush us, and our order was placed before the kitchen closed. We ordered miso soup, Szechuan chicken, chicken fried rice, and a Salmon celebration sushi combo. Our last dish was customized - they kindly switched their Cantonese chow mein to soft noodle lo mein for us and agreed to make ours without pork. The miso soup was denser and saltier than we expected. I think the soup had been in the warmer all evening, so some of the liquid had evaporated. Everything else was tasty and enjoyable. The vegetables were fresh and fully cooked but still crispy in the Szechuan chicken and lo mein. The fried rice was tasty too. The sushi was excellent. The salmon sashimi was thickly cut and the salmon rose was gorgeous as well. The pickled ginger was also fresh and crisp. Our server was attentive but not overbearing. So impressed with the customer service here and how well they handle food allergies. My mom is celiac, and I have multiple severe allergies so it's important to us to have confidence in where we eat. I called ahead, and the manager was very helpful, super allergy aware, and extremely compassionate. Even though they couldn't feed me in the end (my allergies are really diverse and it's rare that a chef can accommodate me), they went out of their way to make me feel welcome at the table with my family. We went here after a special event and had a good time. The restaurant is nice and clean, the waiter we had was very nice and attentive, especially for such a big table and order. The food is the part that, for me, gets this place only about 3 stars. Let me be clear in saying the dishes are all just fine -- there is nothing wrong with them at all. We had sushi, noodles, dim sum, and some other beef dishes served at our table and although they were all made to a decent standard, my gripe is that I have had a lot better of those exact same kind of dishes at other restaurants in town for *comparable prices*. Again, I'm not trying to compare this restaurant with some high-end and crazy-priced location, I'm simply comparing apples to apples. Would I recommend this location? For sure! Try it out. Bambu looks good enough to lure in the airport traveller or T&T shopper, but the food and service are seriously lacking. - Seated quickly then kept us waiting to be served (it was not busy). - Draught beer not working (none of it). - Basic items on menu not available (rice wraps). - Water had to be asked for and then given in a dirty glass, with no apology. - Meal sized mango salad was mostly lettuce, instead of mango. - Stir fry was very greasy and had tiny scraps of meat (mostly noodles, onions and oil). - Server was indifferent and did nothing to make the best of a bad situation. I wouldn't normally have a problem paying $15 for a good Pad Thai or Shanghai noodles, but here that'll get you an oily "takeout" on a plate and no service. Disclaimer: I don't eat sushi, so can't comment on that which occupied most of the menu. For me Pho Thai Fusion just down the road is way better quality, quantity and service (see my review). The food is delicious, but the small portions and expensive prices make me skeptical. If you are here though, definitely get the lemongrass porkchop dish and anything with seafood. The beef noodles are pretty good and definitely authentic (but again on the pricey side). Wait time on food is a little on the long side. We definitely waited a good 15-20 minutes after our app for just our main to come (and the restaurant wasn't busy). :( It's a good place to takes guests or a romantic date. This might be one of the only Chinese restaurants in Ottawa that spend money on decor/presentation and that's definitely the reason why the prices are on the pricier side when it comes to this type of food. Service is great, but it's a little annoying that an none of the waiters actually know anything about asian culture or too much about the dishes... This place has a young atmosphere and most waiters have been courteous. The food is asian fusion: a success overall. The food is real, which is the first thing that must be mentioned when we talk Chinese food, thai or sushi. Most thai food that I've ordered would be somewhere between delicious and ok. Even if it wasn't stellar, i want to emphasize that the food is always real. Maybe I don't know where to eat sushi, but this is the only place in Ottawa I know of, besides upscale places like Becta, where the sushi is safe to eat and authentic. You can order dim sum any time they are open. One of the perks to the young atmosphere and concept of the place is that the diner is not constrained by the traditional meal times for food on the menu. also, you can order all at once, little by little, family style or white people style. My family came to Bambu for a birthday dinner and we all had a great evening! We arrived at 5pm on a Saturday night and by 6:30-7pm it was packed! The service was great - our waitress was very attentive and made sure we were well taken care of. My husband and I shared the Vegetable Spring Rolls to start. They were nice and warm, crispy shell on the outside and very tasty! For my main dish I ordered Chicken Pad Thai and my husband ordered the Northern Style Spicy Beef and white rice. I love Bambu's Chicken Pad Thai. It's more on the sweet side and the portion is huge - had to take some home! The noodles are so tasty! The Spicy beef was a hit too! No leftovers on the plate and there was just the right amount of spice. For dessert, we ordered the deep fried banana and chocolate cake. The cake was amazing - a perfect 3 layer rich chocolatey cake! Yummmm! The deep fried banana was just ok. The batter tasted like the tempura batter and lacked flavour. I wished it were crispier, sweeter and had some cinnamon spices. The vanilla ice cream was really good. All in all, another great night at Bambu! read more

I've seen Bambu for years and finally made it there with my wife. As we entered from Riverside, it looked like the place was closed--it wasn't. It was a Sunday at around 6:30 p.m. when we walked in and surprisingly, the place was almost empty. But it didn't take long for the seats to fill. There was plenty of seating and the ambiance was lovely. I believe they played modern jazz in the background and I felt a bit like Bogart. Our waitress was really nice and spoke fluent Canadian, eh. I started with a Brooklyn Beer, because that's where I'm from originally. I've even been to their factory and I recommend the beer if you like a craft brew. My wife had a green tea which was absolutely fantastic as it was made with brown rice and herbs. We started off with spring rolls--they were not the typical greasy kind you get right before your stroke. They were actually quite good. For the main course, I had a peppercorn shrimp dish with rice and my wife also had shrimp with an eggplant topping. It was really quite tasty and different from what we've had in the past. The only surprise was the bill, which was a bit more than I expected. With decent tip it came to a little over $80. But it was worth it. read more

We had the vegeterian wraps and salted crab for appetizer (both very good). The main courses consisted of Salt & Pepper Tofu (not bad, but we've had better), the Hunan Beef, General Tao Chicken and Vegetable Chow Mein. Although all dishes were tasty, they were heavily sauced and fairly oily, in the tradition of North American Chinese Food. The fried bananas were nice, but not outstanding. Service was also decent. I ordered the Bambu Bento Box but substituted the California Roll for the Vegetarian Roll (which was yummy). But the core dish was my General Tao and it didn't taste as good as I was hoping for. I didn't like the food. It was served on a rectangle plate which my co-workers and I found very unpractical. I ordered ku lu pork from the lunch menu, which was supposed to be a sweet&sour pork with pineapple. My dish had 3 tiny pineapple pieces, 6 bites of pork and the rest was a gross overly sweet sauce and cut bell peppers. It was not worth the 14$ I spent for it. We go to Bambu on a regular basis. I think their Sushi is some of the best I have ever had anywhere. The staff is friendly and I have never had a bad meal or service there. We went to Bambu as a recommendation from our hotel which was close by. I can't honestly say I would go back or recommend it. We ordered the Thai Basil Beef, the spring rolls, the chicken fried rice, and the grilled lemon grass chicken. THE GOOD part was the spring rolls were tasty and that they had lots of alcohol, wine, beer on tap. THE BAD part is that we wanted some Thai food and their Thai food sucked. The lemon grass chicken tasted like a piece of grilled chicken with no seasoning whatsoever. I can honestly say it was the worst of its kind I have ever had. The Thai basil beef was also disappointing. A few overcooked basil leaves in beef that looked artificially red, was sweet and spicy but not really anything special. I think it reminded me more of sweet and sour pork than anything Thai (I will admit I am not a leading authority but have had this dish at other restaurants). The dishes also seemed kinda pricey for what you get. Some people on here have called this Asian fusion but if you want Asian fusion, eating Panda Express is a better choice. The chicken had that rubbery feeling that it may not be fresh, and had perhaps come from a bag. I may not be correct but I found it to not have the texture or consistency of fresh chicken. Not to mention, it was a little bit bland. The vegetables that came with the curry were undercooked, and seemed to be cheap options. It would have been nice to see some quality vegetables rather than your standard green pepper and onion... Oh, it also had potatoes. I found this strange for curry. I am a huge lover of pad thai. When I took a bite of my boyfriend's pad thai, I honestly didn't really care for it. It didn't taste authentic at all. It tasted more like an international version rather than the Thai version. Plus, I can guarantee that they use ketchup in their sauce (like many restaurants who cut corners). Lets just say, if you are a pad Thai lover, don't order it here.
