On our way back from Minnesota to Tennessee, I picked this place out to check out as it was conveniently located and we wanted to make sure we got some cheese before we went back. Walking in it pretty much looks like a small grocery store, they had all things cheese related and more. They also sold meats which was interesting and other items. Onto the cheese! There were so many cheeses. There were different types of flavors, infused cheeses with garlic/bacon/chocolate, etc. It was a little overwhelming looking through all the cheese and selecting what we wanted to eat. But, it was great that the person that was helping with us let us take our time and choose what we wanted to sample. There were so many options, but we kept it to a few and looked for what appealed to us the most. We ended up getting the Applewood Smoked Garlic & Herb Gouda, the Bacon Muenster, and the Pesto Havarti. All the cheeses were great, the only regret that I had was that I wished that we bought more as we didn't stop by any other cheese spot and should have just finished all our cheese shopping there. I know you can order all the cheeses that they offer online, but it's a different experience to just be there and try out the cheese before you buy. I would not recommend the chocolate, but if you want to know what it tastes like, it's like chocolate ice cream except it doesn't melt. I got a very cold reception from the employees in this place. No cheese sampling, which is a major downer when many other places are offering it, no friendly "hellos" when you walk in, just a very distant, cold mannerism displayed by all the employees. Felt like I was intruding in their space, and I didn't like it. We drove another 10 miles to find a cheese shop where the owner chatted with us, gave us plenty of samples, and we ended up buying much more cheese than what we purchased here. I don't know if I caught these guys on a bad day or what, but I was so not impressed. If you're driving through and looking for cheese, there are plenty of other options and you may be better served skipping this place. read more

Awesome cheese shop that surprisingly carry more than just cheese. The store isn't too big but not too small either and yet you feel like you just walked into cheese wonderland. There were so many different types of cheeses that I didn't know where to start. Luckily they had a sample tasting of about 6 different cheeses and two kinds of dip to help out those that are lost like me. I ended up picking up 5 different kinds of cheeses and they are: 1. Cheese curds ( you get two choices, one that made the day off and anything from the previous day is 50%off). I took a bag that was 50% off because I thought it was a great deal and it tasted great. 2. Cave Aged Cheddar - my sisters pick, very sharp and flavorful 3. Snow White Goat Cheddar Cheese - mom's pick , very creamy 4. Mild Cheddar Cheese - my pick for a gift for a friend 5. Apple Smoked Garlic Cheddar - my pick for the garlic lover in my life I also picked up garlic infused olive oil, honey and maple syrup. I've driven past this place probably 30 times on my way to our lake house in Michigan and I've never stopped. I finally did and I'm So happy that I did. I was shocked at all the varieties of cheese they offered. Lots of cheddars, lots of Swiss. I purchased five different kinds to try. Chicken Soup Cheese, blueberry Havarti, blueberry Cheddar, a goats milk Cheddar and a morel Mushroom and leek jack cheese. I've tried all of them and they are all outstanding. My favorites are the blueberry Havarti and the chicken Soup Cheese. Both cause they are so different. I also purchased pear wine, some "packer" brats as well. They also Offered meats. Candy. They were permanently closed. I can't say I was completely surprised, but giving someone 10 years of loyalty only to be left out in the cold is a shock to the system. I was lost and didn't know what to do or where to go. Early in our relationship I'd given other places a try but they hadn't impressed me as much, so I'd committed and now found myself alone. Dating is hard. Finding a cheese/wine/gifts/meats shop worth my time is harder. Fortunately, Ehlenbach's was a quick rebound. "I can have another you by tomorrow." Literally. Bey knows what's up. I discovered the WC&WC was closed on Saturday and I was in love with Ehlenbach's by Sunday. And this was actually an upgrade, too. There was much more variety and having it just outside Madison makes it a nice little stop somewhat in the middle of my journey. You name it; they've got it! They have cases upon cases of cheese (I highly recommend the aged cheddars), there's a good wine and beer selection, they offer Wisconsin-centric souvenirs, they have meats, they have chocolates and candies, and they have individually packaged packets of tasty Door County Coffee. They even sell imported cuckoo clocks! How cool is that?! Moving on can be scary, but it might just mean that you're movin' on up! read more

Nothing unique about this place. The staff weren't exactly offering to help us, so we didn't try any cheeses, therefore we didn't purchase any. I saw a lot of large retailer brands and not so much on small, locally produced cheese. Prices were also quite high. You could get the same cheese from a grocery store. The big cow outside made for a few good photo ops and if you go down the street, there's a big pink elephant to laugh at. Sure there's lots of cheese places in Wisconsin and you can't miss on many of them. This one goes out of its way to get noticed. As you head west on I90/94 past Madison, near DeForest, you see a tall sign that reads "CHEESE" and a mouse dressed in Oktoberfest attire climbing up the sign. This mouse was our reason to check it out. According to their postcard, the mouse is 14 feet tall. Now that's a big rodent! Anyway, the shop has a wide selection of cheeses, cheese curds, and meats that complement the cheese. There's also some jams, honeys, and crafted items for sale. So I love cheese. I made hubby pull off the interstate and check out a place that had a huge sign that simply said, "CHEESE." And CHEESE it was! In all directions, in all variations, they have the cheese! My favorite part of this store is that they sell cold bags and ice blocks. This allowed us to pick out some of our cheese products and allow us to take them on our road trip back home to Nevada. There is also a bunch of kitchy stuff there. On our way back from Wisconsin Dells recently, we were beckoned by the roadside billboards to stop at Ehlenbach's and decided to stop in. It was a decision we did not regret! Cheese lovers: this place is for you! The number of cheeses here is mind boggling. Who knew that there were several different kinds of blue cheese? And they have some creations that are downright creative (Buffalo flavored cheese. Apple Cinnamon Cheddar. Chocolate Cheese fudge?!). We ended up purchasing a brick of the Wunderbar and a half pound of the Chicken Soup Cheese (yes, it really tastes like chicken soup, and it is amazing!). In addition to cheese, they also have sausage, salami, candy, and wine. You can also purchase very nice gift boxes for the cheese and sausage lover in your life. The staff here is very nice and helpful, and can answer just about any question you pose to them re the cheeses. See a cheese that piques your interest, but aren't 100% sure that you'll like it? They can cut you a sample to try! Bonus: Ehlenbach's ships to all 50 states! A little over a year ago my Husband and I moved to Madison from Chicago. Wisconsin had always been our home away from home. Well now that we're residents here we figured that we need to explore our surrounding areas. Our motto is "Saturdays are for exploring and Sunday's are for relaxing (or football depending on the season)" We kept seeing these commercials and thought we should totally go! With my Mom and Daughter both coming to visit we wanted to get them some Wisconsincentric gifties. I had to get a stuffed 'Sissy the Cow'! That's the name of the huge two ton cow that greets you when you pull into the parking lot. Too cute! We purchased some smoked string cheese that was gone before the end of their visit...a real HIT! We also got some delicious jams, jellies and fudge...not to mention Packer burgers! The girls behind the counter were very nice and patient as my Husband asked to try several different cheeses. We ended up getting some VERY hot and unique cheeses. I HIGHLY recommend that you go for some hard to find cheeses. Each time I browse and take about an hour trying to decide on what kinds of goodies I get this time. Their selection is absurd! I almost had to laugh how much cheese can occupy one place. We decided to stop here for a bathroom break for my daughter on our road trip instead of the gas station. I decided to make a quick stop at this place after seeing a few advertisements on the side of the road and it's conveniently located right off the highway. It's a cute shop, very touristy with a lot of things to look at. They have souvenirs, jams, chocolates, candies, beers and, of course, lots of cheese. We purchased a pack of cheese curds, string cheese and a couple of six packs of New Glarus. The cheese curds were nice and squeaky and were successfully made into some tasty fried cheese curds the next day. The pepper string cheese had a good kick to it and was probably the best string cheese I've ever had. It was convenient to be able to pick up all these snacks in one stop, however, I noticed at a gas station a little further away, that the New Glarus six packs were almost $4 cheaper!!!!! I wish I didn't see those price tags at the gas station! I would have given this place 4 stars if it weren't for the inflated prices. And the employees weren't really friendly. No one greeted us or even attempted to speak to us, so we didn't sample any cheeses.. womp womp. read more

Well this place is extremely expensive including cheese and beer. I have stopped at other cheese factories including the one in Arena and the prices there are a lot more reasonable. In fact, one could get a mile or so off the highway (take 151 west to Sun Prairie) and get the same cheese and beer from Woodmans for half the price. In fact, Woodman's has curds made fresh within the past day. Staff was ok. No one greeted me. Also can the completely inane commercials. They are not funny. I have a good idea for the store. Lower the prices, have fresher curds (like made the same day for ultimate squeekiness), have staff ask customers if they can help and get new professional commercials. Cow is cute. There is another big cow located off Highway 26/I-90 in Janesville for more photo ops. read more

On a recent road trip to Minnesota, we drove through a lot of Wisconsin and knew we couldn't go home without stopping and buying cheese at least once. Well our cheese stop happened to be at the Cheese Chalet-the huge CHEESE sign with a climbing mouse dressed in lederhosen and a giant cow helped out our decision. They have the usual "cheese shop" stuff.....cheeses, sausages, mustards, jams, honeys, and the like as well as some Chalet merch. The prices seemed reasonable. The only thing that pissed me off is they have a 1/2lb minimum on all their items. With just my husband and I-we would have much preferred 1/4 lbs (and likely bought more). We tried the buffalo Monterrey jack and it was disappointing. The garlic Monterrey jack was only made with garlic powder, so we passed on that. But we also tried the apple cinnamon Monterrey jack and it was surprisingly delicious (we just didn't want a 1/2 lb of it!) I was impressed with their selection of cheddars and we ended up buying a 3 yr old white cheddar and a garlic summer sausage that were both good. I doubt I'll be back since I didn't fall in love with it as I have the Mars Cheese Castle-and I'm rarely up that way, but if you want a fun place to rest your legs while on a road trip hit up the Chalet! read more

TONS of Cheese!!! Whatever flavor you are looking for....they have it. Seriously, they have EVERYTHING. I was going to give this 4 stars, but their curds were not squeaky. As Inspector Curd once said, "they must be squeaky!" Cameron said slap your curds for a while and they will get squeaky, but they never did. The 14 year old cheddar is amazing. Very friendly staff and helpful with the samples. We rolled in from California and rolled out with the ghost pepper cheddar and the habañero cheddar along with some applewood smoked garlic cheddar. The selection here is good covering almost the entire cheese spectrum so if you can't find it at Ehlenbach's it probably doesn't exist. read more

Nice variety, selection goes well beyond cheese. They don't have the freshest cheese curds but they're good enough. What's blowing me away is this jar of pickles we got there in mid-January that is still good end of May. And there aren't preservatives listed as an ingredient.
