We were thrilled when we finally walked through the door again after wracking our brains to remember our favorite spot in Old Town. Upon entering, we were greeted by a young woman who, mentioned it was her very first day as an assistant to the bartender. Despite being brand new, she was warm, engaged, and genuinely welcoming, excited for us that we had made it back after several years, and impressed with our efforts. Shortly thereafter the bartender on duty approached us mid-conversation, visibly irritated. When I mentioned that we hadn't yet decided on drinks but were being well taken care of in the meantime, she interrupted sharply to bark at us that she was the bartender and the ONLY one who could help us. The tone was unwelcoming enough that after a moment, my companion and I determined that we would prefer to move on and left without ordering. The atmosphere is truly special, and it deserves to be matched by the experience guests receive at the bar. Our experience was simply not the vibe that night, and I truly was disappointed FOR the new hire who was doing what she should in engaging us until we could be served. I sincerely hope to return on a future visit to San Juan and to rediscover the experience that first brought me back to La Grieta.

It wasn't a busy night when we went, but the vibe was still incredible--and a big part of that was thanks to the bartender, K. He's seriously amazing! Not only does he know how to make great drinks, but his personality and conversation skills really made the night. K even gave us an awesome tour of the entire bar, which has some of the coolest rooms I've seen, including a super private space with a pole in it. Let me just say, I so wish I had known about this beforehand because it would've been perfect for my husband's birthday. Next time, for sure! The fact that it's also a hostel blew my mind. They have shared rooms, a pool, and overall such a cool setup. It's way bigger than you'd think from the outside, especially considering it's tucked away off the highway. I had the 'Walk in the Woods' which is their version of an Old-fashion, amazing! My friends had 'De La Tierra' with mezcal and Rose and Peper with vodka/gin. They loved them. All cocktails had A+ on presentation as well. Besides the amazing cocktails they also have a small sharing-style food menu. We ordered several things like the steak, chorizo turnovers, ceviche with malanga chips, octopus salad and beef carpaccio all of them delicious. The rooftop now has an actual roof, which took away a lot of the open sky, but it is still open enough to see it without being affected by rain. Service was fantastic, as were drinks. On this trip, the appetizers were great and the main entrees were okay. From what I heard, the entire concept will be changing after they shut down in mid-November and re-open in December. I look forward to returning in 2026.
