Antiguo 26 is the highest rated cocktail lounge in old town. We decided to give them a try based on the rating. A classic speakeasy vibe with a Puerto Rican style. Each cocktail handcrafted and made, especially for you. You could tell the bartenders took a lot of pride in their work. The food list is short and more of a tapas for something to enjoy while you're drinking... The "Masa" was unbelievable, we had ours with chicken and would pay for a plate to have an entrée. Although we're committed to trying different restaurants and bars, each of the nights were here I'm tempted to go back just to have this dish. This bar has the best drinks in all old san juan. The bartender juan was amazing at recommending us drinks and making them for us. He also gave us recommendations on places to go. The ingredients were fresh and high quality and you could taste it with every sip. They had live music up until 11:30 or so from a local guitar player. Amazing experience at Antiguo 26. What appeared like a really cool historic building from the outside, was all that and more on the inside ! The spot was warm, rustic, with an amazing cocktail menu. We had a chat with the super knowledgeable bartenders and selected two amazing cocktails. These were no ordinary cocktails. They were both well thought out and required complex processes to reach the level of flavor and balance found in both. The drinks were phenomenal. The food was on point. I loved the tuna and my mom loved the churassco and mofongo. It was Tapas style but for me it was definitely filling. I love the music. Old school Salsa before it was modernized. I will never hesitate to come here again. I know they are known for their drinks but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. Yes it is expensive but you get what you pay for and I have traveled many places and this is surprisingly good! The picture of the wall with my mom shows some old school grinders. Also, they have Victrola music player on display with the big horn. Very cool to find this place. I would definitely bring a significant other who likes the upbeat "salsa" atmosphere. We were spending the night in old San Juan and looking for a yummy place to eat and found this place with great reviews on yelp. We walked over and the place was very nice, with live music playing, and some people at the bar, but nobody at any of the seating tables, and a second room in the back with a very large table perfect for our party of nine. The server came quickly and the drinks were amazing, but Very pricey, especially the food. It turns out they only had appetizers to eat, and of the six or seven options they were out of the majority of them, when we asked for just the fries from the sliders appetizer since they were out of sliders, they refused. When the first appetizer came out, which was a sliver of sausage on top of a tiny Crostini with a splash of mustard, we realized we were better off making these ourselves for $30 each. We tried to cancel the other appetizers, but the server refused to let us. They came out and were equally bad. The chicken skewers tasted like they came out of a microwave and were slathered in barbecue sauce. The server never came back to ask us if we even liked the food and we're not very accommodating at all even after we showed disappointment in everything. Delicious drinks and best only Mexican ceviche we found. The local artsy, PR hipster vibe was fun. The bar tender was great and the cook was amazing. We were visiting from LA, Cali. Chicanos craving Mexican ceviche and the cook shared his love for Mexico and shared his inspiration to make Mexican food with a PR twist. Great fusion, not everyone can do it. Beautiful building! I loved the marble flooring. The bar stools in the back weren't the comfiest but they made do. My mojito, not pictured, was refreshing but it had a little too much mint. I had one drink. It was great. I would have loved to have ordered more drinks and some food. I sat at the bar by myself for over an hour. I tried to get the attention of the bartenders (Jose and I forget the other's name) multiple times in multiple ways. I said "Pardon me" with my hand up. I said, "excuse me". I said, "permiso". I slid my finished drink to the edge of the bar to symbolize that I was finished. I made eye contact multiple times. I watched 'not Jose' do about 7 loads of dishes. I was checked on once by another staff member who was not a main bartender. Overall, I felt like I was a nuisance to the staff. Like I was taking up valuable space. I was ignored. I could've easily left without paying. I had to alert them that I wanted to close out. As a bartender myself, I know how a patron should be treated. I know how to multitask. I know how to check in with my people to make sure they have everything they need. In my bright yellow dress and bright red lipstick, sitting smack dab in the middle of the bar, I was hard to miss. Ignoring me was intentional. I don't know if it was because I was a woman dining alone or because I was the only Black person at the bar but I was clearly unwelcome. I can't help but try and rationalize the reason I was treated so poorly. Maybe they are afraid of influencer culture and I was there with a camera. Maybe they thought I would make them too popular and it would negatively impact their business in the future. I'm probably reaching. Their rating is deserved but maybe they are not an inclusive establishment. I want to also note that the couples on either side of me whom I could have reached out and touched, both received multiple platters and drinks and were checked in on regularly so it wasn't because they were too busy or short staffed. Again, as a bartender myself, I know that when things pick up you become more vigilant. I was really looking forward to making this place a regular spot, especially since it's near where I work. We had some questions about the cocktails and she answered them and then some. Easily one of my favorite cocktails i've ever had!! Our bartender took his time with our drinks and I'm not mad at it since he spent time to make the drinks taste good. One suggestion is making the drink in front of us instead of with another group. LOVED it here. It's a family run business and it's absolutely wonderful. The owner is so nice and goes out of his way to make you feel welcomed in his establishments. He also owns Juana la Loca (also a must visit!) a few doors down. We went twice during our 3 days in Old San Juan. It used to be an old soda factory and they kept the history and continued to make sodas. The blackberry soda is amazing! Our first place was full so I did a quick search and this place looked nice. We walked by and there was room for us. 4 adults 2 kids at 7:15 pm on a Thursday. Cocktails are unique and delicious. But could use more alcohol for the price. 12-15$. We tried the octopus salad. It had lots of texture but could use more salt and acidity. The ponchos were very good.
