For all the people who say that Reno doesn't have good tacos isn't looking hard enough. For those looking extra hard they might have the joy of finding El Amigo Market. The meat are among some of the best I've had in Reno, the prices are average to fair, the salsas are good, and the place is fun to explore while you wait for some food. El Amigo Market seems like a great place to grab lunch, or a snack before a movie. They don't offer a lot in the way of amenities: There's no wait staff, no menu other than some pictures on the wall, and no salsa bar (You do get salsas with your food though). I got regular tacos (carnitas, and al-pastor), and my partner got the tacos dorados plate. They were both good, even after a short 5 minute drive the tacos dorados were still very crunchy. The plain tacos were stacked with meat and flavor. I do wish that the tortilla was a little better, but I think they are just using factory tortillas, not fresh ones. This place is about as divvy/bear bones as it gets, but that's what gives it charm. It's just a service counter with some tables, and not much else. But if you are looking for some tacos and you are in the area it's worth trying. And if you say there are no good taco spots in town check this place out first. read more

My boyfriend brought me here last week and it totally hit the spot for authentic tacos! We tried five (2 chicharrones, 1 asada, 1 barbacoa, 1 pastor) and the pastor was my favorite--his was the chicharrones. The salsa was perfect, and I couldn't resist adding a pupusa (so good!). El amigo is my neighborhood carneceria that I enjoy. I am moving soon and will be sad not to have this place right at the corner. I have not tried anything here except their carne asada burrito. Ive been wondering about this place for awhile and finally got a chance to try it with some friends who lives across the street but we're moving..so one last lunch.. Its a decent size place. On one side of the building is a small store and the other side is the restaurant. About a dozen tables with plenty of room. Its also a dlei/meat market so they have display cases. We were greeted by a older gentleman who was very nice and described/ answered any question you had. I got the taco combo.. I couldn't pick what meat I wanted.i believe it was already prepared and it was with beef.. it came with 4 tacos piled high with Lettuce, crema and cheese...i loved that they do that.. the meat was dry..sad panda .. but the green salsa they give you made it so much better.. that salsa was the best! The beans and rice were good so that helped fill me up.. My fiancee got the birria quesadilla with beans and rice too.. but, her meat was also dry too.. she also had to use alot of the salsa and lime.. The Birria Quesodilla was good, but alittle too much fat for my personal preference and there was no consume to dip into. The green salsa is absolutely amazing, and so is the red which has slightly more kick than the green. I'm also a huge fan of the rice and beans. They were very flavorful and traditional. I have been going to El Amigo Market for years!! I honestly LOVE to eat here! It is a local carniceria place that sells meat, is combined with a small market, and a dine or take out restaurant. I believe this is one of the best places to get Sopes and a big Burrito for a decent price. It is delicious. Not many places sell Lengua ( Cows tounge) but here you can get it! I definitely recommend it! Especially if you are around the Park Lane movie theaters because they are right behind it! Don't let their appearance fool you. It's not 4/5 star restaurant and there is no waiters or refills on drinks. You simply order your food to go or for dine in, you make a seat, and enjoy a nice fresh meal! If you appreciate small locally owned buisnesses like this, I definitely recommend going! 4/5 Stars because like I said, it's no restaurant so there really is no bathroom. If can walk next door to the market and ask to use there's. The wait time, depending on busy it is can be long and sometimes irritating but especially during your 30 minute lunch (Trust me, I know). This a whole in the wall type of restaurant so do not expect fabulous ambiance. It is also a family owned business. The owners, Alicia and Gabrielle, are hard workers. Their kids are also in the restaurant to help out. I have uploaded photos of what we ordered. Pros: ~Easy to find. ~Cheap prices. ~Burrito ~ $6.71 is HUGE. You could split this for two people. ~Carnitas ~ $12.00 Good portion. This reminds me of lechon from Philippines. El Amigo Market, Carniceria, and Deli lies about halfway between the old International Market and the new International Market and thus it was, while lost between International Markets, we decided to stop here instead. We needed lots of Mexican ingredients--whole spices, chilis, pork butt, and banana leaves--for Husband to make Puerco Pibil, and they carried everything we needed at this one little store. The woman at the register was incredibly helpful; she translated some of the items we needed and even recommended what she uses to make her own pibil. At the meat counter, the butcher-ess chopped up our pork butt into small cubes at no extra charge. That's is good, old-fashioned customer service there, folks! To top off our experience, we decided to try some of their tacos, and let me tell you, they were the best tacos I have had in Reno. This will be our new super-secret place to get great tacos. Except that DAMN...I just told you! I took off one star due to the fact that the market is pretty small, crowded and dingy. This place rocks!! I was seriously having such a bad day, when I found this place. I ended up on Wrondel looking for a tire repair place that was supposed to be open. After driving the same stretch of 2 blocks for 20 minutes, I finally found the guy. Closed. What a pain in my ass!!! I was SO mad. I had to go to another guy on that street who was open, but only to put the spare on. He did, and charged me $15! What another bummer. Probably because I was not in a mini skirt. I was pretty heated at this point with all the tire drama that had been another hour of stress before this. SO I walked towards the sign that said 711. Figured a Slurpee would cheer me up. On the way, I spotted another sign that said Pupusas. Sweet!!, I thought. I have been DYING to try those! Just never seem to be any where to find them. So I walked in and ordered. They were everything I had imagined and more. The cashier was soo nice and told me his parents owned the place. The pupusas were only $1.50 each, so I got two. One with fresh, house made chicharones and the other with just beans and cheese. If I live din Reno, I would be there all the time for the one with chicharones!!! And an extra side of them too, for snacking! The pupus came with a fresh marinated cabbage and this really tangy, sweet orange colored sauce, like a citrus salsa almost. I USED to go in all the time to buy basic things that I would run out of at home. Yes, this place was my go-to place and I gave them MUCH business. All of this has changed and I think everyone should read carefully my most recent (and last) experience at this place and why it is that I in no way, shape or form encourage any one else to shop there or continue shopping there for that matter. Like I said, I would usually go there for many things. Out of these many things I would buy "sides" of food to take home and have with my other home-prepared meals. Every time I had gone in there for these "sides" or other things I would purchase there, the staff was VERY polite. I can't say that they ever treated me in a bad or harsh way. Here's the problem: I went in there about two days ago (must have been Saturday or Sunday 20th or 21st of October 2012). I saw that this new man began to help me out. I really didn't even know who he was. I ordered three (3) sides of food and a pound of dairy food. After he gave me the three sides of food, I noticed he had given it to me in an unusual sized container. I simply asked, "are the three sides in there?", he immediately gave me a very intimidating look! He was clearly upset for whatever reason and was just about to take it out on me! He begins slightly shaking his head from side-to-side, spreads his arms real wide, and says "what do you mean?" I replied by saying, "I'm just asking, because just yesterday or the day before that I came in before they were about to close up and I was given a different size container, that's all. It's OK though, it's just a different sized container today". He clearly wanted to take his anger out on an innocent individual, he then raises his voice and says (pointing vigorously and viciously at the container of food), "each side of food is one freakin' spoonful!" I didn't argue with him, I simply said, "Oh. Ok". So since I wasn't really arguing with him-and that's what he wanted- he began to humiliate me and bash me in front of another customer and had his dishwasher (some woman that's also in there cooking most of the time). He yells at his female employee referring to me as if I were a thing, "Hey! Listen to THIS one! He says that one side is that full container over there"! The employee immediately yelled out, "what! NOOOOO!!! He's freakin' crazy"! Or like she exactly said it in spanish, "QUE?!?! NOOOOO!!! Esta pinche loco"! Which he REALLY crossed the line at that point! Because A.) I never even assumed he was giving me less, it was a simple question that I made! B.) I never even said that one side was a full big container (right there he just put words in my mouth). C.) It's an insult for him to even put me on the spot like that and make it sound like he had caught me trying to rip him off! I was outraged and offended. I managed to control myself and say, "calm down a bit, you're overreacting, don't you think?" He packed up the dairy doing these horrible inexplicable body movements and yelled out, "who FU*&IN$ gave you that container with three sides of food the last time you were here"! Before I answered him, I said, "well I'll tell you, but they did not give it to me full"! He made it clear that he thought I was lying to him and said, "I know who it was! It was that FU*&IN$ woman that works here in the afternoons"! I said, "NO!", because it really wasn't a woman, it was a young medium set guy that had attended to my business. He then sounded very psychotic, the way he assured me that when that woman showed up for work again, she was going to see something VERY unpleasant. I once again assured him it was not a woman that attended to my business that time. After I told him again it was a young guy, he said, "Oh! Well it was my son then! Wait until he gets here and he'll see what I'm made of"! I was frightened! I had never had someone tell me ahead of time that when their employees get there (especially because it was his son) they were up for something VERY unpleasant! He ended up the business with me by saying, "by the way I'm the owner here and it's my way or the high way around here"! Then it struck me! No wonder whenever I would go in there to buy, all the employees there seem so dominated, depressed, and sad! This man must treat his entire family and staff like trash! Yes, he has his wife, daughter and son working there. It all made sense at the end. I did not want to leave without trying to help out the young lady and the other guy out that he was supposedly going to mistreat as soon as they showed up. I approached the wife and asked, "are you the owner of this place as well?", she said she was. I said, "I will not be coming here anymore." She asked what had happened, and I began to explain to her what I just wrote in this review, and the husband comes out of nowhere yelling at me, "YES! You gossiper that's my wife!" It's a small "hood" joint lol. Doesn't look like a restaurant from outside really but when you go inside and try the food, you're hooked. I come here all the time and get a Burrito de Asada and some tacos de lengua and tripa and all that good shit and booooyyyy do I love this place! They take a while to cook the food but it's definitely worth it! The burrito is hella big and will fill you up! And they got the little store where you can buy chips and drinks as well. Horrible service. I bought one pound of carnitas and some peanuts and they charged me 17 dollars. So I asked them why it was so expensive and the lady says "oh I'm sorry I was so focused on the soccer game I gave you the wrong price" The butcher seemed angry at me for making him do his job. I got home and saw that he gave me nothing but pure fat and hardly any meat. Needless to say, I will never return to that disgusting place. I wish I could give them a negative 5 stars. read more
