I took the time to read each and every review here on Yelp about El Azteca, and I am sure that they are all valid experiences, but we have been twice, take out orders both times and we were very impressed with the quality and tastiness of the dishes we ordered. The same person took our orders both times, a very nice woman who also served as cashier. Both times the orders came out of the kitchen very quickly and they were nice and hot. The Fajitas were especially good with large pieces of well seasoned beef and large, very fresh tasting shrimp, which was really a pleasant surprise. Of the two times we visited, we had more food than two people could possibly consume for well under $30.00. The atmosphere is a bit funky both inside and out, but that doesn't bother us at all. We were traveling from FL to IN, and while staying at the Days Inn & Suites we found this charming little El Azteca Mexican Restaurant just behind the Inn. We had the Fajitas for and were very impressed with the freshness and quality of this dish. Frankly, it was as good,, or better, than any Fajitas we have had anywhere, ever. First of all, I have to say that I hate to have to give this bad review because it's obvious this is a restaurant that is supported by the locals, because most of them knew each other and there was friendly talk between most tables and new customers upon arrival. That aside, being someone from out of town, my husband and I went to El Azteca because it had the highest rating on Yelp of a Mexican restaurant in Commerce. Our disappointment started as we drove by the overgrown landscaping into an almost abandoned parking lot. My husband posted a picture of the broken planter filled with trash that graced the front door. I wish I could post a pic of our menus. Yes, not one, but both of our menus were nasty with evidence of spills having leaked between the plastic covers to discolor and smear the ink of the already low quality, "copy-machine" pages. The waiter hadn't seen a shower in a few days and seemed only half conscious. He was uneducated with regards to the menu and didn't know what kind of beers were available. My beer was only barely cold and the limes were dry and smelly with brown spots. They went unused. The guacamole was pretty good. My husband liked his entree more than I liked mine (chicken fajitas nachos). The bottle of hot sauce that I retrieved from another table was coated with blackened, dried hot sauce from the several uses of patrons before me. We never saw our waiter after he took our order until he brought food to the table next to us at the end of our meal. This was lucky because we were more than ready for our check at that point. Upon exiting, I went to the restroom which had an entryway coated with filth and worn paint, then coated with thick dust on the inside (see pics). The building looks as if it were built years or even decades ago without an ounce of maintenance or improvement since. Not even a coat of paint. There is a broken water fountain in the outside, overgrown yard that has internal pump parts and tubing in the second layer of the fountain, while a green mess of algae forms in the bottom. The one thing I do have to say for this restaurant is that the lady who acted as hostess was friendly and accommodating upon arrival. I even saw her go out of her way to wipe the rain off of a customer's walker's seat before she sat on it. There was also a man who repeatedly brought the plates to the table from the kitchen who was well dressed, friendly, eager to please, and very professional. He sometimes circled the room after he brought out food to make sure we had every thing we needed. Thank goodness, due to the vanishing waiter. He really was a one-man show. I'm sure the restaurant relies heavily on that man. He needs a raise! All in all . . . go somewhere else. read more

This is really good Mexican food. It's really cheap also as you can see from the menu photos that I took. This place has moved and is actually in the building behind the original restaurant. I'm sure they moved because the rent was cheaper. All the pictures I'm seeing is of the old restaurant in front of the new one. This new one is much cleaner. If no one is at the front counter then I just go ahead and seat myself and there is never a problem with that. This restaurant is always busy during peak hours so the food speaks for itself. I had a fajita taco salad and my wife had chicken quesadilla and beans in this particular visit. Everything was great. This is as close to authentic as you will get in the commerce banks crossing area. If your a local that has never been here or someone traveling down interstate 85 then it will be worth it to stop in and have some great Mexican food. read more

I've never experienced that level of slowness and disorganization at a restaurant. We stopped because Mexican is usually a quick meal. We stood at the front desk for ten minutes while staff scurried around, no one acknowledged us. We were sat but not given menus. We were approached three times by three different wait staff to get our drink order. Still no menus. Finally menus, and a while later, we order. It's been 30 minutes at this point, and we've gone through six baskets of chips. (We notice that a table we knew was seated when we walked in JUST got their food.) People were waiting to pay, waiting to be seated, all standing at the front looking around for someone to help them. Food came. It's been an hour. Everything tasted ok, except my "shrimp, garlic, tomato and avocado" dish had heaps of garlic... Heaps. I thought it was quinoa there was so much. And I like garlic but wow. Flagged our waitress down to get the check, stood with the mass of people at the front to pay, and left. Took an hour and a half. TLDR: took foreeeeever, tasted ok. read more

This was an incredibly lucky find! We were having a roadside overnight in Commerce at the Days Inn & Suites ... didn't want to get back in the car for dinner ... didn't want chain or fast food. Directly next door(upon recommendation from lovely hotel clerk ... another review) we got doo lucky with El Aztecs! I had the carnitas ... generous enough portion that should have shared with dining companion ... succulent chunks of roasted pork with beautiful and bountiful plate of salad rice beans salsa avocado and on and on. read more

I don't know if the 5-star reviews are for the same place (this review is for the restaurant at the given address), or if it's changed management, or what. The place was mostly empty on a Saturday evening (first bad sign). We'd passed by at least one other Mexican restaurant with people waiting outside based on the reviews, thought, so we went on in. The decor looks like a re-purposed Chinese place, but that's not a problem. The men's bathroom was completely out of paper... towels, toilet, everything. I mentioned this to a worker who had just taken a phone order, and I honestly don't think he understood a word I said. I don't have a hang-up about people not speaking my language, but I have to wonder about the phone order. The menu looked like a standard copy of every other standard Americanized Mexican restaurant (the same "combo" section with various iterations of tacos, enchiladas, burritos, etc). The waiter was definitely American, though. I asked him to describe their version of Chili Colorado and got a confused look, then said, "It's taco sauce, I think." I got a #18 combo (beef enchilada, beef taco, rice, beans) to be safe. My wife got the 4-enchilada combo (beef, chicken, cheese, beans). Chips and salsa were good; the perfect amount of heat, but too much lime. The rest of the food... blah. The beef was flavorless, the sauce probably canned, the rice and beans the same pre-packaged stuff you can get anywhere. My wife's enchiladas weren't any better. Very generous portions. It wasn't absolutely horrible (my criteria for a 1-star), but I doubt I'll ever go back. read more

Wow! After reading the reviews I have to wonder if we all went to the same place! When we first drove up we did not see a handicap accessible entrance so we left. I was curious so I called them and they said yes in fact they did and it was to the right of the stairs and the young man on the phone said he would meet us out front! I was impressed, I said turn around and go back! That was where it all went sideways! We get there and unload my mother in law (who is in a wheelchair) and a young man comes running down what appears to be the KITCHEN entrance, he greets us and leads us that way, it was not very safe as it is quite uneven on the pavement. Needless to say we enter through a VERY nasty door and are not sent to the front to be seated rather we are seated next to the huge trash can and noisy kitchen. (I've posted pictures) We immediately get to order or drinks but then are ignored for 35 minutes, chips ran out, salsa ran out, my mil's drink ran out! This gave new plenty of time to look around and realize how nasty this place was. We considered leaving but everyone was just tired and hungry. When the food came out they got my mil's dish wrong and my dish was tasteless! My husband was so tired I thought he would just ignore everything when he piped up and said 'NEVER AGAIN' I knew I wasn't alone in dreading the decision to come here. Again no one is serving us, we sit chipLESS, and I start to complain. It's really odd because the staff seems to be running themselves ragged but not really getting any work done! By this time in assuming it was the owner who was at our table kept saying the server was new and we didn't explain what we wanted well enough so now we are partially to blame for this horrible experience. She had quite an attitude! We finally asked for the check and I wrote the words HORRIBLE SERVICE on it and gave it to her, she never apologized at all. When my husband signed the receipt I again wrote horrible service and we shouldn't have even have had to pay! If I could give this place 0 stars I'd do it! Horrible, just horrible! read more

Second time I went the woman that's there during the day was a complete asshole and really didn't care to serve us. We waited for her to come back and take our order since we sat near the bar, after she took our drink orders she never came back I had to ask the other woman to take our orders. Went here on a whim and was pleasantly surprised to find authentic Mexican on the menu. The standard salsa is what I refer to as Mexican ketchup but ask for the tomatilla sauce if you like good spicy salsa. Had the AL pastor tacos and close to same ones I get when in Mexico working from the taquerias. Service was excellent almost overbearing but seemed to be mostly family. From eating at many so called Mexican restaurants that are amercanized it is nice to get a taste of authentic food. read more

I went to check it out despite the negative ratings. I always look for health inspections. They had received a 100. No one approached me initially so I looked at a menu. A girl came up to speak to me with a sucker in her mouth. Okay there's a language barrier because I speak English and she spoke Spanish. I think we could have figured it out IF she had removed the sucker from her mouth. I told her the second time I couldn't understand her with the sucker in her mouth. She turned and spoke with someone else. They pointed towards an area and I told them that's okay I would go somewhere else. The area is very unkempt outside so I will not be back. read more

On way home from the Islands and needed to stop and eat some authentic American food. Yep, Mexican American that is. Stuffed Pablano peppers oozing with Caso were to die for. My wife got a great order of Macho Nachos as her meal and shared with me. IT was enormous and really hit the spot. She had been craving this and I found the place on Yelp thinking it would have what she wanted and we were not disappointed. Not sure I will ever find this place again but if I do the Nachos are out of this world! And free chips and salsa of course which is a must for us. I have to ditto most of what Jason K. has to say, except that I think I liked the food a little more than he did. Although I will say that this restaurant's menu is like every other stereotypical Tex-Mex restaurant where I've eaten. The biggest problem with this place is that it's nasty. The doors are not just dirty, they're sticky. There is a deck in front with mismatched tables and chairs - and not mismatched in a quaint way, but a trashy way. The grass was un-mowed and there were weeds growing up in a lot of places. If not for the "Open" sign and the flags out front, I might have thought the place was not in business. There's a fountain in front (just outside the window where we sat) that's broken. I know this because there are pieces in one of the fountain's bowls. Speaking of the bowls, they are full of water and green with algae. There was a nasty pepper shaker on our table, but no salt shaker. My wife picked up a bottle of hot sauce from another table that had a thick coat of dried hot sauce around the lid. Her beer was not cold - mine was good. What the heck is hanging from the door in the uploaded pic - it looks like toilet paper. And the broken cigarette receptacle in the other pic was at the front door - appetizing! To make matters worse, in my particular case our waiter was bad. He couldn't tell me what kind of beer they had and after he took our order he never returned. In fairness, I must say that the other wait staff appeared to know what they were doing and were friendly and helpful to their customers, so maybe we were just unlucky with our waiter. One might ask why in the heck did you stay and eat?!!?!!? We almost didn't. The only reason we went to this restaurant was because of the overall Yelp rating of "4." read more

Went here in search of some good Mexican food and certainly found it. El Azteca provided both great food and great service. It seemed sketchy on the outside, and at night it certainly is outside, but inside things are different. The waiter was friendly and took our order quickly, even provided the typical complimentary chips and salsa in a very timely manner. All of our food was delicious, and though I would have rather been there in the light of day, I would definitely recommend El Azteca. read more

I am from San Diego Ca. and have lived in Madison county for 10 years now. I have found that good Mexican food is a hard thing to find in the southeast. I would say that the food a tEl Azteca is some of the best that I found in this part of the country. The people that work at Azteca seem to be good folks and don't bother you every time you put a bite in your mouth. The prices are comparable to the area. Compared to the Mexican food from San Diego and Las Cruces NM. I would give El Azteca an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. Ya can't go wrong with this place! read more

The locals have it figured out. Don't tell anyone about this place, just keep it to our selves. If you are used to the cookie cutter franchise type operations this is not the place for you. They do not try to hustle drinks, appetizers, or desserts on you or turn the table over in 20 minutes. I have been taking my family there for years. If you want "authentic" food with old recipes passed down through generations, this is the place for you. Don't be in a hurry, just relax and enjoy and don't tell too many strangers about this place.
