One of my favorite Mexican places ever, and I've probably been to 20 or 30. Amazing chorriqueso, but ever other item I've had has also been exceptional-- only drawback is they only have the basic menu items but they are all good. Love the decor and seating is plentiful and comfortable. Servers are always polite and efficient and the food service is always quick. Definitely recommend! read more

Wow is this place good. I only tried it to go, but it's still worthwhile. They load you up on the rice & beans. You'll also get plenty of salsa and lime as well. The steak tacos with corn tortillas are amazingly done. This is a must try if you're in the area. Certified goodness. read more

I just went to El Huesteco on Winder Hwy in Jefferson. When I opened up the food (while there) and put it in a clear container to avoid it spilling in my car (again) there was only 1/2 inch of cheese in the bottom. (This was a cheese dip I ordered). When I commented on it, she said that's all it comes with. The container was only 3x3 inches but tall, so it didn't have any room to fill the bottom either. So I bought a second one and deleted them from my contact list after 15 years. I don't mind paying for what I get, but greatly resent being ripped off. I suggest the Mexican restaurant off of 129@85 exit. You get what you pay for. read more

I've eaten here 3 times now and have enjoyed my meal each time. The chips are hit/miss, sometimes they are a little on the chewy side. I think overcooking is the issue tho, I don't get the impression they're stale. I always get my order to-go and they always say "20 minutes" but I got there in 15 last time and it was ready. I consider this a good thing personally. I'd rather not show up and have to wait. I'm only deducting 1 star because of the chips lacking consistency but everything else is good and the prices are fair for the food. I will keep coming back. read more

My experience with this restaurant was the worst I have experienced anywhere! The place was dingy and could use an update. We had a table of 4. After a short wait for a table, we got seated and asked about drinks. One in our group was served the wrong drink! We had to ask for straws. The food was delivered to 3 of us, while the 4th person waited until her husband went and asked about it, 15 minutes later. I was also missing part of mine. The food is always FRESH. The vegetables, sauce, salsa, it's all beyond fresh and you can taste it. The dishes are amazing, though I'm not Mexican, I am Puerto Rican and the food tastes great EVERY time we order. The ambience is cozy and familiar, like a true family owned business. I've been coming here with my family for 10+ years and this is our favorite place in Jefferson. The salsa here is always fresh and some of the best I've had. The owners are friendly and welcoming. They serve all kinds of authentic Mexican cuisine, with some unique dishes as well. Family favorites include the tacos dianne, the Mexican pizza, and the molcajete (a giant volcanic rock bowl filled with all sorts of meat, sauces, quesadillas, and veggies-- serves two or three). Only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was it was too hot in there for me. The air conditioning said 83 degrees inside but in all fairness it was upper 90's outside. Food was ok but I almost broke a tooth on a bone found in the carnitas tacos. When I told the server about it, they not only brushed it off but didn't apologize or offer any kind of comp or discount on the food. Other than that it was meh. Had dinner here after shopping for furniture in Jefferson. It is a great Mexican spot! We arrive before the dinner rush by 5 minutes so if you can go a little early to avoid the wait, you can get seated for dinner right away. I had the Chicken Tortilla Soup and cheese chili rellenos. The soup was amazing! Good white chicken chunks, avocado, super flavorful broth. Really tasty!! The chili rellenos was huge and also yummy! Lots of cheese and red sauce. Would have liked a little more spice in the red sauce but it was still flavorful. Salsa was excellent! Lots of onions and cilantro. Really yummy with the fresh tortilla chips! read more

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant. I've been coming here for 8 years and it's always satisfying.

Where to begin? This food was not good. The rice was dry, the beans were watery, the chips were stale -- maybe they were re-fried or started in oil that was too cool? Chips were very oily. The steak was suspect. I don't want to use the word "rancid", but the meat tasted like it were old or near expiration. The tamales were bland, as if pulled from a can. On a positive note, the staff were very friendly. Maybe the staff should go work at Gringos, because it is hands-down better. read more

This is a small family owned restaurant. I've been eating there for years. They continue to improve which I admire greatly. The food and drink prices are really reasonable. Their enchilada Verde's is the best I've ever had. The Flavor of the Carnitas is excellent. They also have a dish called molcajete, this dish has chorizo, chicken and beef. It has cheese quesadilla, Anaheim chiles and green onion. The Carnitas and the molcajete are both large dishes. We typically order extra tortillas and share the dish. This is not a slick chain restaurant so don't be surprised when you see the creative way they handled the construction of the restaurant! read more

We have eaten here a few times before and it has always been a good experience. The staff has always been supper friendly. But today we ordered take out and got horrible food. A shrimp was not cleaned properly and still had the poop trail, I was willing to ignore this. Then we found a critter in the salsa. They where quick to apologize and refund our money. Normally would be a 4 star as I have been here prob 20x or so. 12/29/18 Yesterdays lunch was great for me. Very bad later on for the wife - kept me up all night if ya know what I mean. I had the Chorizo Fundido + 3 tamales w/a marg. Very good all the way around. Wife had a Spinach Quesadilla and 1 tamale. Everything seemed great until later on last night and up into the wee hours of the morning. Scared the dog and woke me up. I felt so bad for her as it was my idea for lunch. I went over everything we ate all day from breakfast onward and it all matched up except for her Spinach Quesadilla and a Mr Pibb. I figure it was the spinach as that stuff is known for some bad experiences if not handled properly. Waiter was very professional and courteous, right on the spot and had a great attitude. I did not recognize him but I don't go there every month - just occasionally. We have never had a bad experience here so I'll call it a glitch. I really love those little hole in the wall type of places that put out great product and always have a great smile when ya walk in the door like they do here. If the wife is willing to go again I'll update this review - but I'll wait a bit b4 asking her. I hope she is as forgiving as me cuz I really like the place and the people. read more

We're local... and I love local, hometown places that are friendly, well-run and treat you right. That is what we get from El Huasteco... their menu is the same as Gringo's - perhaps different names for dishes, but I have read all the descriptions and I have eaten at both... same food. El Huasteco is slightly more affordable though... and easier and faster to get orders from... in my experience. The staff is friendly and will accommodate special order requests and the result has always been delicious... and the few - very few - times that something wasn't right, they make it right... that's why I go there first for good Mexican food! Not to mention that the portions are very ample and it is easy to have leftovers when ordering one entree. I read the other reviews... if you want to take the word of people from other places who were so used to how things were made at their other favorite restaurants, then you really aren't getting an accurate representation of good food that you can find at a place like this. Honestly, it sounds like some folks want to bring outside expectations and then run down places that don't prepare things the way they got them elsewhere. Don't do that if you are going to leave an honest review. There are currently four Mexican restaurants here... and I go to this one first. They closed for a while during the virus BS... and, boy were they missed! I got food from the other places during that time and was very disappointed in the cost, time, and accuracy of our orders. I had to restrain myself from hugging them all when they reopened! Try them... if something isn't right, or doesn't taste right to you, let them know and give them a chance to satisfy your needs... most likely, they will... and faster and less expensive than the other places in town. read more

Being a local In Jefferson I've seen many restaurants come and go and fail miserably since there isn't much a food scene going on here. But if I eat locally(which I never really do) this is hands down the only place I will eat. The chicken or steak fajita got platter can feed 2 very well and is only 17 bucks. You can't beat that at all. Something so simply not over done at all, not over or under seasoned and not bland at all. I'd also recommend asking for this red sauce they have, I can't remember what they call it but it's good on everything !! read more

We moved to Jefferson recently. Being of Mexican descent, my family and I set out to try all the Mexican places in Jefferson in the hope of finding food half as good as Mamacita used to make. Now, in 40 years of living in Los Angeles, I never found a restaurant to compare to Mamacita's food, so the chances in Jefferson are slim. But one can hope. El Huasteco isn't the place. I read the reviews - small place, friendly, family run - and I got my hopes up. Maybe the evening we went was an off night. My son ordered a combination with an enchilada and a chile relleno, and got an unfried, rolled-up tortilla with no filling and some red sauce on top. The chile relleno was a slop with some cheese, meat and strips of chile, but bearing no resemblance to any chile I've seen. Now the true chile relleno is a work of art. The chile, generally a Poblano, is roasted and peeled, filled with cheese, and fried in an egg batter. You can put meat in it if you want - carne deshebrada is good - but you can't leave out the cheese. El Jinete leaves out the egg batter and the cheese, doesn't peel the chile, and puts spiced hamburger meat inside, so it doesn't really taste right, although the other dishes we tried there were pretty good. El Centinela leaves out the egg batter but at least you can get it with cheese. The chile relleno arrived after we were blasted with banda music at pain-inducing levels for 20 minutes, and this torture continued while we ate. Maybe they've discovered that norteña music at full volume drives patrons to drink. But at Jinete and Centinela, the chile relleno at least looks like a chile. Who knows what we got at El Huasteco. As best I can tell, this place appeals to drinkers. The staff prepares huge margaritas and delivers them with a great deal of joshing and tomfoolery. This is what passes for friendliness. If you not a drinker, they're not much interested in you. The food seems secondary as well. read more

Place isn't very clean. We were brought the normal chips and salsa when we arrived and as we separated the second bowl there was a dead bug in between. Also the cups were dirty. There are other Mexican restaurants nearby, save yourself the sickness and go to one of them. read more
