Particularly,…read morenorthern Mexican and the style of "Border Mexican" food found on just about every corner in El Paso and southern New Mexico. I'm also a big fan of pan dulce, a generic term to describe pastries and "sweet breads". I was delighted to discover, when I bought a second home in Edwards, CO, a Panaderia right in the middle of town. Unlike most areas in the Vail Valley, there is a sizable (at least as a percentage of the town's population) Latinx population in Edwards. Panaderia Azteca eluded me for several months until a neighbor raved about their capriotada, a sort of Mexican-style bread pudding. I love flan and pastel tres leches, but had never even HEARD of capriotada before. Several times after my friend raved about this bakery, I tried, but failed to find any capriotada. I discovered on my fifth try that they bake a limited amount of capriotada early in the morning and sell out later in the morning. Eventually, I'll get down to Panaderia Azteca in the morning before they sell out, but in the mean time, I've enjoyed the most delicious bolios (with cream cheese and plain), powdered-sugar wedding cookies, and pina-filled empanadas imaginable. There are tons of other varieties I haven't tried yet, but my goal is to experience the capriotada one morning when it's still warm! Can't wait. So far, the bolios (dinner rolls) are my favorite, but the empanadas and wedding cookies are as good as they get!

Our family of five was stuck in Edwards east of Vail Pass during a…read moresnowstorm on Monday and while looking for a place to wait out the storm we discovered Panaderia Azteka. Walking through the door we stepped into heaven. So many wonderful smells filling the air, beautiful multicolored pastries everywhere, and behind the counter the owner working his craft beside a giant pile of sweet dough. We were mesmerized watching him skillfully transform small balls of dough into beautiful works of art. He shared with us the story of his parents passing on and his journey to honor them through his baking. To say his food is made with love would be understating things. We tried many different pastries and breads, all of which brought huge smiles to our children's faces. I recommend this spot to anyone. This unplanned pit stop became a highlight of our trip.

The store motto is clearly written on the wall: "Always fresh; Always small batch; Finest ingredients" and so forth. The flavor offerings on the menu were also of another reason as to why I think this shop is not like other competitors. The employee upfront generously let us try a few to several different flavors although we exercised discipline to not be too greedy at the same time (we did our part to be well-behaving customers.) I went with two flavors (salted caramel and espresso) and my adult daughter went with London Fog. Sometimes a little sample spoonful can't manifest the true taste of it but a full scoop does reveal itself to the fullest extent. As each bite went into our mouths we started savoring the meticulously crafted ice cream in a real sense. Mine was especially marvelous as two flavors collaborated in a small cup to create a perfect balance and harmony. The store inside is simple and clean. It's not trying to show off with the way the interior looks; it's the very ice cream creation that tells the core soul of the shop. So go here for a dessert after a meal at a nearby restaurant.

Order first, grab a soda from the many refrigerators on the wall and wait for your food. They'll stick your tray on the counter but don't call out that it is ready so if it's busy keep your eyes open. We ordered four kinds of tacos: Carne asada (steak) - it was tender enough and well cooked but seriously lacking in flavor compared to the others that we tasted. Chicken - decent tender chicken shreds albeit a bit plain. Chicharron - small pieces of crispy pork rind that right before serving in the tacos are tossed in a spicy tomato sauce. Very good but you have to eat this one instantly when served otherwise the crispy pork rind starts to get mushy and chewy. Very delicious sauce! Pork al Pastor - Seriously the best of the four. Normally al pastor are made with the pork cooked in layers on a vertical split and served with some pineapple. Since this isn't a very busy place they don't do the volume required for having that kind of spit and they cook marinated chunks of pork on the grill. The marinade was very flavorful and strong and I would order these again the next time we are in the area and decide to eat here. One of the folks in our group had the multiple meat hamburger. It had a beef patty, some baloney like meat, a grilled piece of ham, a split hotdog, and bacon! They have lots of Hispanic and Mexican soft drinks as well as Pepsi products but very little in terms of low calorie drinks. Just Diet Pepsi and then three or four versions of flavored, unsweetened waters like Topo Chico. A very good value relative to the ski town where we are staying.
