Since moving to the South, I hadn't found anything that reminded me of home (I'm from Phoenix, and my mom is from Michoacán) -- until now. This place is truly a gem. Angelica and her team are incredible. You can genuinely taste the care and dedication in every dish they serve. The tamales are easily the best I've had in town--honestly, maybe even in the whole state. And the pico de gallo deserves a special mention. I usually avoid ordering it at restaurants because it often lacks freshness, but theirs is vibrant, fresh, and absolutely delicious. My partner is more pickier than I am, he loved the flautas. We had asked if they could make them and to our surprise they worked their magic. They even added them to the menu! Absolutely honoring. Service was friendly, but overall I have to go with two stars for this one. I ordered a carnitas plate with rice and beans and added an order of chips and queso. After adding on a water, my total was over $20 BEFORE tax and tip. If the food had been terrific, this wouldn't be as of note but the food was "just okay" and portions were small. Carnitas are a favorite of mine, and I can get twice the amount of carnitas (and better) at almost any Mexican restaurant in the city for half the price. The rice and beans were standard. The chips were stale and no complimentary red salsa. The queso was okay. All in all, just a mediocre meal for far too high of a charge. The woman who took our order and fixed our food was rude. Her attitude was terrible. I would say it probably was a bad day however this was my second time visiting and it was the same experience. The food was ok. I wasn't thrilled about having to pay extra for each individual thing to add to a burrito (corn, peppers/onions,beans etc) I've never had a burrito that didn't include onions/peppers. She said o would have to upgrade to a plate with peppers as a a side....*crickets* ohhh ok. Definitely not satisfied and i will not be back. This place has been in the Farmer's Market for years and years. I have rarely eaten lunch here I recently did eat lunch here again and the burrito was very large like everyone says. Go here if you are hungry and want to satisfy your appetite. If I was bringing in tourists from other countries to show them an example of "excessive American portions" I would bring them here LOL. They truly shine when it comes to Breakfast burritos. They seemingly are the only restaurant that is consistently open in the mornings. I got a massive chorizo burrito for $7.64 If you missed breakfast and are stuck at work at the vending machine, stop yourself and get your belly full with a breakfast burrito. I really enjoyed the burrito I ordered from here. I'm not a fan of over grilled tortilla and they grill theirs to perfection. I actually did a "build-my-own" and had them add rice, beans, shredded chicken, cheese, and sour cream. My first bite was a party in my mouth!! Wow! The flavors were so amazing, the chicken was juicy and I also added their salsa verde which had just the perfect spice to it. I am hooked! The bean are more of a chili which took the burrito to another level. I believe it is family owned and both husband and wife were so friendly and all about me! Less than a week after my first time at El Burrito Mexicano, I returned for breakfast. After having their amazing grilled enchiladas for lunch, I had to see what their breakfast burrito was all about... and let me tell you.... it was AWESOME!! For $4.99, the huge burrito was stuffed with bacon, eggs, and homestyle fries that were grilled with onions. Then everything was topped with shredded cheese. I used their hot verde sauce to use on the side, and it gave the burrito the perfect kick. The serving size was big. I could only finish half of it in one sitting, but ate the rest later. Like other reviewers have said, all around just a decent burrito place, my experience however was quite strange. The main issue I actually had was the service. I had been walking around, checking out the other food options at the farmers market when I settled on this place. As I walked up to the counter, and squinted at the small menu to see what I was going to order, a worker hastily told me to order on the other side. I reassured him I was indeed going to give them my business, I was only looking at the menu, but he again insisted I order, now. Ok then. So I moved over and ordered a burrito on the counter from another worker. The worker mumbled something and as I said, "excuse me?" he seemed to get angry and slowly responded, "what. meats. do. you. want." Again, ok then. At that point I'm sure you're thinking I should have walked away, but I was hungry. I quickly chose chicken, the safest option, since it didn't seem like they didn't want to give me any time to order. I received my burrito(luckily topped with cheese), also with apparently no option for other toppings or fillings, receiving lettuce with sour cream, and a single slice tomato, and I later served myself jalapeños. As I finally approached the counter to pay it ended up being around $8, a single burrito, no sides and no drink. I asked for water, assuming once again it was free, but was told that that would be 25 cents. Of course. Now that that's aside, on to the food. It's true, the "as big as your head" burritos where indeed a good, filling size. As I cut into it though, I was reminded that my burrito did in fact have chicken. And only chicken. The lettuce, tomato, and jalapeños served as the only condiments, luckily the queso added some semblance of flavor to it all. Although I did not purchase my food from here, I did share some of my husband's food. This was a really nice hot bar that was set up like a Qdoba but with more options. They had Al Pastor, fajita steak, seasoned chicken, barbecue chicken, ground beef and refried beans as protein options. They also had varied choices for sides such as large chunks of grilled potatoes, yams, skin on fries and a grilled zucchini mix. There were plenty of options is you prefer your burrito without meat. My husband ordered the chicken burrito stuffed with beans, chicken, fresh veggies and cilantro. He also chose a mix of grilled veggies and a coke to complete his combo. Everything was perfectly and thoroughly seasoned so it made for the perfect combination of flavors. The grilled vegetable side was very good because the vegetables were nice and crisp with great grilled flavor. Service was fast and efficient which makes this restaurant a great option for a quick meal. Their tamales are probably even better than their big ol'burritos, quite frankly---they just are perfectly cooked and flavored...and I love all the different toppings and side veggies they offer as well. I was willing to go breakfast burrito-less if it meant living in a city I adored, but I'd be lying if I said my heart didn't break a little bit each Sunday (BB day in my book). And then, like a lightning bolt from the heavens, one day in December 2013, I somehow entered just the right combination of search terms on Yelp, or perhaps the Nashville gods had decided it was time to reward my efforts, but there it was: a review about this place and its breakfast burritos. I was headed downtown faster than a toupee in a hurricane. Oh, what a glorious day when I first tasted El Burrito Mexicano's veggie breakfast burrito: eggs, cheese, potatoes, freshly-chopped jalapenos, peppers, onions, and a little bit of magic. I live close by to the Farmer's Market and often find myself there for a quick lunch. I've been to El Burrito twice, and both times I've been pleasantly surprised with my food. The first time I went, I had the enchilada plate, which included 2 enchiladas (maybe 3?) and 2 sides. My plate definitely weighed close to three pounds. It was a ridiculous amount of food for a small price, and it was pretty tasty too! Today I decided to opt for less food and went with two tacos and a side of rice. This was definitely more of a reasonable portion. The only thing that takes away a star for me is that their ordering system is a little confusing. Whereas most burrito places you can see the toppings to add, they have theirs in a back cooler, which is fine but I'm not yet familiar with all of the options. They also have a nice little salsa/jalapeno area to add to your meal, but again, for a first (and second!) timer, it's a little confusing. El Burrito Mexicano is average, and plentiful. There's no shame in calling it average. It's good, it hits the spot, and it's on par with the other options in the area. They claim they can make a vegetarian burrito, but after eating, I'm pretty sure the beans were not. Truth be told, I am kind of surprised based on what I got to the 4 and 5 star reviews.
