You know you're in for a treat when you walk in and the menu is entirely in Spanish. I was running errands in West Nashville on a Sunday, craving tacos, and my usual spot was closed, so I took a chance on this one. Easy dedicated parking lot right in front. You will not find queso, fajitas, or any of the hallmarks of Americanized Tex-Mex here. This spot is for people truly searching for authenticity, which Taqueria Azteca has in spades. I eventually found the English menu and ordered a few things I feel like I don't often see: two sopes (one pollo, one tinga) and a pollo gordita. Just regular water to drink. The whole meal came to about $13 and they take Apple Pay, which was a win. The inside is small and it seems popular to get food to go, but I decided to sit and eat. My food came out fresh, made to order, in about 10 minutes, and I had my pick of three homemade salsas. The red and the darker green were both too spicy for my weakling tastebuds, but the light green was perfect and I put it all over everything. The tinga was my favorite of the two meats, juicy and incredibly flavorful. The regular pollo was a bit dry and not that flavorful on its own, though the salsa fixed it. Both the sope and the gordita came loaded with refried beans, lettuce, sour cream, pico, onions, and cilantro. Truly needed a fork to get through all the messy deliciousness. Three items turned out to be slightly more food than I could handle, but man were they delicious. I'd love to come back next time I'm in the area! read more

Service was so friendly and despite us not speaking any Spanish, and our wonderful waitress no English, we were able to figure it out! Their menu has both English and Spanish on it. Cute little hole in the wall type joint. Very small and homey, a no frills establishment but the food is outstanding- the place doesn't do it justice. I had the steak tacos, they came with grilled onions which I loved. I went on Cinco de Mayo for lunch, and was surprised to find that my coworker and I were the only table. Came here unplanned for a quick bite and was blown away!!! Hole in the wall vibe, quick service. $2 per taco, each plate comes with some side veggies and lime. We got four carnitas, one chorizo, and one carne asada taco. Would say 3-4 is definitely enough for meal, 1-2 is good for a snack. Taqueria Azteca is a veritable institution on the west side, and we are no strangers to their home-grown, delicious menu. We had a bit of a wait for a to-go item, but I never mind that: they ran out of one of the meats we were hoping for, but I figured whatever tacos they made would be fresher as a result. (I was right, and we were floored by all the food made for us). It is an absolute requirement for us to get horchata whenever it's offered on the menu, and this visit was no exception. It was the perfect pairing with our al pastor, carnitas, and chorizo tacos. We also indulged in a fantastic torta; they don't skim on the veggies, lime, or salsa here. The salsa roja and salsa verde seemed like they were made in-house and fresh. The spice within them was the perfect amount of heat. There is a sizeable private lot if you're meeting a larger party, and there were several different table sizes ranging from four to eight-ish parties. There are also outdoor picnic table options available when the weather gets cooler. This one is not to miss. read more

Great price and delicious tacos! For $2 per taco, I ordered a delicious meal of 4 tacos for a lunch that had me full! The carne asada was well seasoned and the salsa was absolutely delicious! I also ordered a side of chips and salsa and the chips were made fresh, and the guacamole was delicious. I highly recommend trying out this spot. I came here after a yelp suggestion when on the west side. They have since improved the place inside since my first visit more than a year ago. They have improved the flooring and tables. I always get a Huarache with a single taco. The light green jalapeno sauce as is standard at a lot of taco joints is my go to. I re-visited the place last night because I was hungry. My only concern was the carne asada (that is the filling I asked for) sometimes had a bit of the hardness (cartilage) in it. Other than that I devoured my plate. They are implementing covid precautions. They do have outdoor seating (despite what is said here) but since its winter it may be hard to get service out there - I am sure if you told the hostess you wanted to eat outside they would oblige since the outside trailer is where the food is made. (I am assuming) I would return here. We are so blessed to have good Mexican food here in Nashville. read more

A hole in the wall restaurant serving authentic Mexican food. I opted for an asada gordita, an asada taco, a carnitas taco, and a chorizo taco. Honestly, it is so cheap, with tacos at $1.35 each and a gordita at $3.25, that it is a great deal all around. The layout is a bit strange, with the interior being just a collection of tables and a server. You order with her and she runs out to a food truck in the corner where they prepare the food. The sauces at my table were all great, though if I had to pick a favorite, it would have to be the green. As for the rest of the food, it was very good. Very good. And again, you cannot beat the price point. I guess out of the three, my favorite was the asada. The beef just possessed an incredible flavor, though all three tacos and the gordita were excellent and the accompanying grilled jalapeno, grilled onions, and cucumbers was a nice touch. I cannot express how happy I am that we are seeking out better Mexican dishes than either fast food options or the old standby chains. This is a great example of the great food that awaits in those hole in the wall places. This establishment, while exceedingly humble, kicks out some very good food (especially considering that it is prepared outside in a food truck). I would recommend it heartily. I start this with a warning. If you like Tito's, Las Palmas, and the other sodium heavy Amerimex places in town, you will likely abhor this food. You will call it bland because you can actually taste beans due to the lack of over salting. And you will find strange things on the menu that look nothing like tacos and burritos. You have been warned. When I went, the kitchen was the taco truck in front. Not sure if that is the norm or not, but it is possible they don't have a real kitchen inside (although it appears there is space). The location, which is on American across from the Aldi (just off Charlotte), used to be a pool shop, which cut their space down and rented to Taqueria Azteca (i.e. pool shop still there in the other half of the building). The menu? I personal love Central American food, so this is my jam. I will describe what I had with an analogue of the food (the description is a bit incorect, but gives you an idea). I had mulitas (a tostada"sandwich"), a sope (puffy tostada (fried corn meal, masa) with toppings), and a huarache (kind of tostada, but with much different toppings and texture). I have since grabbed a ham torta (sandwich) and some empanadas (dinner turnovers?). Feelings about the food? Very simple, but nicely done. As I warned the flavors are more natural and none of it is overly salted. This is more akin to authentic food of the region. The place? A bit of a hole in the wall with a taco truck in front. Very simple inside. Not the sit down and have great table service, but this is for the food, not the service. Service was great, as well, although knowing a bit of spanish sure helped with the ordering. When you say 'authentic', you can't get much more authentic than here outside of Nolensville Pike. For $1.75/taco, you have the choice of pork, chicken, and beef. I was very satisfied with the flavor and quality of the tacos. On the menu, you have several options to choose from aside from tacos. Every item is al a carte, so keep that in mind because stuff adds up quickly. An additional must-have is the guacamole and chips. Food is delivered as it is completed. We had a sope, more tacos than should be allowed for any human, and a burrito. Staff was friendly and they were really nice to my impossible to please grandma. Tacos 5 star! The steak tacos are just like I had in Mexico. On the smaller side but are also less than $2 each. Meat is well seasoned and they came out with the usual toppings plus caramelized onions. The rest of what we got was average. The bbq in the empanada was fatty and the outside was more like a savory hand pie than an empanada crust. The nachos were nothing to write home about (I have a soft spot for nachos and had to try them.) Go here and get some great tacos. It is my mission in life to sample all the authentic taco restaurants and trucks in Nashville and luckily Charlotte Ave is much easier to tackle than Nolensville Pike. Taqueria Azteca is a restaurant across the street from Aldi slightly off Charlotte and I would probably give them a 3.5. The restaurant is small but has about 10 tables or so and I was able to pay with a credit card which is a plus! I ordered the pastor, chorizo, and lengua tacos. Per usual, the pastor tacos were my favorite but I enjoyed the other two also. The tortillas weren't my favorite texture or consistency, but the red sauce was very spicy (yes!) and the green sauce was good but I prefer the creamy jalapeno sauce. Overall, the meat was well seasoned and delicious and came with caramelized onions which is a plus in my book. I am getting my mind blown at some of these hole in the wall gems Nashville has to offer. I have had the tacos here usually after a grocery stop at Aldi. But I told myself, I have to write a review and give this place 6 stars (Yes I would if I could) after a trip to a very famous taco place in New York. Double tortilla, the meats are tender, juicy, and the flavors are so good. You know they do the meat right if only a lemon squeeze, onion and cilantro are the condiments to elevate flavor. House sauces are delicious! There are two kinds, red and green and the latter is just gorgeously spicy; not unbearably hot but tasty. We had lengue and barbacoa...Amazing, soft, clean flavors and you will get flavor from the meat alone here. I don't know how to describe how beautiful the flavor is, it's so good here and honestly makes other places so overrated. I have been to two other upscale taco places in Nashville, that really is like paying for ambience more than flavor, and will not go back to by choice. Taqueria Azteca is clean, service is quick and for the flavors, I am going to be back here more often than anywhere else. I have only tried the tacos here as a quick snack, but will have to be back to try the rest of the menu. Least, I am coming back for the house sauces. Really hits the spot for street tacos. Taqueria Azteca is discreetly located across from the Aldi, next to a pool supply store and has a taco truck out front. Now, I realize that was a lot of detail but it will all make sense once you pull into the gravel lot. There is a brick and mortar restaurant with seating for you to enjoy your meal, but it seems that the cooking is done in the truck outside the shop. Essentially the truck serves as an outdoor kitchen, so you're literally getting the best of both worlds--taco truck food with the comfort of sitting in a restaurant with table service. Each taco was a little over $1 each as usual and very good quality. Tacos come with grilled onions, grilled pepper and radishes on the side. Here in Nashville a lot of places don't serve the extra grilled veggies and radishes so it's always a nice touch when the tacos come with it. I had a lengua taco in California that was the best I've ever had, and I've been on a mission to find one comparable in Tennessee. I ordered one lengua here, and it was fantastic! Meat was so tender and flavorful, not chewy at all. Asada was good, but my favorite is always barbacoa. Something about the slow cooked beef elevates the taco for me. I also ordered a horchata that was strong on the cinnamon, just the way I like it. I will definitely be back again! read more

Well it Nashville. The traffic is horrible the street to get from the Holiday in to the place was Itsy Bitzy and as stated earlier PACKED. Found the place easily it across the street from the ALDI. Unlike every where else they had parking for Days. The Kitchen is in a Trailer and there is a dinning room next to it. The Lady at the front desk was friendly and the ordering was at the counter. I sat in the dinning room all by myself. NICE! The music machine is like a Disco system. Spanish music galore. The food is prepared and brought in pretty quickly. The Taco are small. The meats were realy good. I had the tongue and AL Pastor, the Al Pastor is the Real deal. Great flavors and good sauces. If it was any where else it would have been pricey but for Nashville. Absolutely delicious! If you love classic Mexican food, definitely try this place out! We love trying different taquerias and this is one of the better ones we have had. The place is small but so so clean! They were even actively cleaning the place while we were there which is always a nice thing to see at restaurants. The waitress was very timid and quiet (we could barely hear her) but she may have been new & nervous. It was really awkward when we first got there as we weren't sure if she wanted us to sit anywhere or if she wanted us somewhere specific. When we asked, she just handed us the menus and stood there until another woman came out and told us to sit wherever. But once we sat down, service was great! The food came out quickly and was so satisfying! The Jamaica is fantastic and not overly sweet like some places make it. Incredible, delicious, authentic tacos as they should be. Meat, cilantro, and onion with 3 amazing sauce choices on doubled-up corn tortillas. The price cannot be beat, the service is always friendly and prompt, and I cannot stress enough how flavorful the food is. The guacamole and chips are literally made to order; hand smashed guacamole and fresh from the fryer chips that are so hot you have to wait to dig in (the worst part!!). My fiancé will order a quesadilla once in awhile as well and it is huge and delicious, again, a phenomenal price. You are not getting frills or a 5 star dining experience here.
