My girlfriend and I went to Bakersfield for dinner prior to a show at Ryman. The service was thankfully quick (we had a reservation for a party of 2) on a Saturday night. Inside the restaurant it was very loud (music) and hard to hear even when you're trying to lean in and pay attention. We ordered the "dinner for 2" that's $49 at the time. We agreed that most of the food felt warm and dry. When it comes to the tacos, we felt that some of the protein/meats were dry (and again was warm and on the soggier side.) Stopped in for a mid-afternoon lunch after a morning of zip lining and we were starving. We decided to share the "Dinner for Two" option and it ended up being the perfect choice. We started with a selection of taquitos and chicken empanadas, which were a great way to kick things off. Both were crispy, flavorful, and perfect for sharing. I've been here several times, and each time it's satisfying. The bartenders are great, the good is always flavorful, and the drinks are complex. It's a little loud especially with it being right off of downtown, but it's a cool spot when they have the doors open and the air is flowing through. Stopped in late night midweek with some friends and had a great experience. Service was super quick and the food was fantastic. We ordered the short rib queso, which was delicious and a huge portion--more than enough for the three of us with leftovers. It was a very rainy night and we were super grateful to escape the rain at this modern taco shop. The bartender was super attentive and got our orders in right away. Upon being seated, our server came over and gave us a run down of the menu. He was such a great server, I wish I got his name so I could have given him out a shout-out. Super friendly and outgoing. Really help make the experience for us. The inside of the restaurant is also so cute. I ordered the Dolly salad and it was sooo yummy! I wanted to immediately go home and make this recipe. We were given a recommendation to come here for later night food. It was pretty empty but it was a Monday night. Waiter was super entertaining and knowledgable. I've stopped here many times when I'm in the area for events. It's just off Broadway and you can walk to everything you need easily. Everything I've had (mostly tacos) here has been great and prices aren't ridiculously high like most downtown places. Everything comes out really quick so that's great when you gotta go fast. Love, love, love Bakersfield. As a New Yorker, I've now enjoyed tacos at Bakersfield in Nashville, Cincinnati, Columbus and Indianapolis... And they never disappoint. Right up there with NYC's Los Taco No1, but with much better atmosphere in a trendy sit down restaurant with a traditional bar serving craft beer and cocktails. My wife had a grilled chicken salad that was quite large, especially for the price. Their pick and choose taco and side selections are great as well. We wanted something quick, nothing fancy and didn't really want to pig out. Our concierge recommended Bakersfield. We walked quite a ways from our hotel when I asked my husband how much farther. He looked at me and said that they had given me the directions. He knows better than that - the single worst fight we have had in 35 years was because of my inability to read maps. (Thank heavens for waze but even that I can mess up) Once he looked up the address, it was super easy to find. It was 7 pm on Friday and the restaurant was busy but really not too bad. There were plenty of open tables. But, alas, the tables were only for reservations. For speed, we decided to just eat at the bar. We still had the full menu, the bartender was right on top of things and we met a couple of young couples who were our kids ages. They shared pictures of their little ones while we shared grandbaby pics. It was a lot more fun than we would have had at a table by ourselves. I ordered a pineapple margarita with a sugar rim. It was great and it was strong. I also ordered the queso (though I meant to order short rib queso) and an al pastor taco. My husband had a modello and one fish and one shrimp taco. We weren't extremely hungry but we didn't order quite enough. All three of our tacos were good but the queso was difficult to eat - it wasn't the creamy, dippable consistency that we are used to. We pretty much had to cut the cheese with the provided spoon and then lay the cheese on top of the chip. I did say we left a little hungry but we didn't finish the queso, it was just too hard to eat. When we were leaving, I looked around and still saw quite a few empty tables. The bar worked out well for us but it wouldn't have worked for a group. I'd like to come back for another pineapple margarita - maybe during our next year's weekend in Nashville. read more
