Guisada. Too salty and tasted like canned hormel roast beef
Rebecca G.

We are visiting Hobbs and decided we wanted some good mexican food. We checked out reviews and decided where to go. The first choice was closed for remodeling. The 2 down the block from there got bad reviews. So based on high reviews, we headed to El Caballero. I have a pretty high tolerance for run down "hole in the wall" restaurants as long as the food is good. But when we pulled up, I asked my husband if he was sure we wanted to eat here. It seriously looks unsafe. The restaurant is in a dilapidated old motel (think 50's motor court but not kept up). It's in the front building right up at the road next to the office (which looks completely closed). We decided to brave it, mostly because we had already been driving around a while and we are fine with marginal neighborhoods as long as the food is good and authentic. There are 2 parking spots in front. We turned in beside it and there are parking places in front of the motel rooms but we didn't want to take up anyone's space (although I'm thinking now that most people staying there don't own cars). So we turned around and backed out and parked behind the motel, where I wasn't certain that our car was safe or that we were safe walking back after dark. But I had high hopes for the food based on the reviews. The inside is just old run down diner, but clean. So we ordered. While waiting on our food, we got chips and 2 types of salsa. The green salsa was very good. The chips were not what I was used to. I think they were homemade but they tasted a bit stale. The food came looking like most Mexican restaurant dinner plates, Rice, beans, and an entree. The rice was decent. The beans tasted like they had been in a refrigerator for several days. I ordered guisada based on a review that raved about it being the best ever. I've never had it before but it was not good. It tasted like Hormel canned roast beef and gravy with a little spice and way too much salt added. With less salt it would have been edible but not good. Just chunks of canned roast beef and gravy. (And maybe they made it homemade but it was not something worth ordering since there is a cheap canned product that tastes pretty much the same.) My husband ordered chicken mole. He's never had mole before but we were trying new things tonight. It was ok, not something either of us would order again. And like mine, his mole was almost too salty to eat. Everyone raves about the service. The waitress was ok. She took our order without a lot of chatter. She brought our food. She refilled our drinks once. But that is the bare minimum that you expect from a waitress. There is nothing about the service to rave about. Just adequate. Initially we planned to return for breakfast since that also got good reviews but we'll just have something at the hotel instead. Everything was so salty that it was barely edible but even without the extra salt I think it would have just been mediocre food in a run down scary setting. I'd advise everyone to avoid it.

Carne guisada plate was really good. Salsas has just enough heat and were a great compliment to the meal.

Service was good but the food was disappointing…read more There wasn't much flavor to the barbacoa in the burrito or the chicken flautas. The sauce on the enchiladas and the guisada was smoky but not flavorful. Not what we were hoping for.

OVERALL If you're looking for affordable Mexican cuisine…read morewith really good flavor where adult beverages are served, El Jimador is a safe bet. RATING BREAKDOWN Food: 4 | Service: 4 | Ambiance: 4 | Price: 4.5 PARKING Ample. LOCATION/AMBIANCE It's on the south side of town near the high school. This place looked nice on the outside and in. There was a variety of tables for different-sized groups. They had a few flatscreens and pleasant music playing. The alarm system was annoying alerting them every time someone came through the door, but I guess that's what helps them know when they have customers. THE GRUB It must've been the ground-to-sky flag flapping in the breeze outside with "tortas" on it that made me gravitate toward the Mexican sandwich ($7.99). Mine came with two small sides of salsa, a red and a green - neither of which I truly cared for because they were overly acidic and not spicy whatsoever. The guisada that I chose was delicious, however, the portion seemed small. The horchata was served in a huge cup & didn't disappoint at all. LITTLE YELPER'S CLUB There is a kid's menu with limited options. I posted a photo of it. SERVICE Kind of slow getting up to the front on 1/3/2024. Then I realized they thought I had a takeout order and they were rushing to bring out two large bags of food to me. Lol. The lady who took my order was friendly and efficient. MY FAVORITE PART... There are a few options for meat on the torta. I went with carne guisada which I couldn't recommend more. NOT SO FAVORITE PART... The salsas. TIP Alcohol is served here. Please have a designated driver.

Review #2,000!…read more OVERALL Taqueria Villa Nueva is a Mexican restaurant in Hobbs, NM that serves the best torta I've tried in the dusty small town. This is a great place for a family meal. RATING BREAKDOWN Food: 4.5 | Service: 5 | Ambiance: 4 | Price: 4 PARKING I parked near the front door but only because the place wasn't all that busy. I wish they would paint some parking lines or make it more clear where their drive-thru window begins and ends. Otherwise, it's not that far to walk with nearby street parking. LOCATION/AMBIANCE The dining room has a couple of beautiful murals inside. The buffet area was set up near the register and the kitchen. There were several different sizes of tables. They played a Spanish radio station in the background with good melodies, but way too many commercials at just before noon. THE GRUB As soon as I saw the opportunity for a torta de barbacoa ($9.99), I requested it. This Mexican sandwich was absolutely delicious. I wanted everything on it - meat, avocado, lettuce, tomato, & potatoes. This was an awesome portion for lunch. On the side was a batch of lukewarm shoestring fries which were not seasoned at all. I didn't eat many of them, so next time I will see if they will swap them fries for some arroz Mexicano! Lol. The nice lady asked me which salsa I wanted - "red or green?" I laughed and said both. She obliged. The red is definitely spicier than their green, but still I could not stop eating it. LITTLE YELPER'S CLUB No kid's menu available that I saw. There were high chairs/slings, though. SERVICE Welcoming & friendly! My takeout order was out in about 5 minutes. MY FAVORITE PART... The barbacoa! NOT SO FAVORITE PART... The fries! TIP Lunch buffet looked really good.

First time here, it's simple Sunday buffet but very delicious. The food was so flavorful. 10/10read more
