Very consistent! Every time it's exactly the same, and it's delicious! The white cheese is awesome that they use on tacos and on beans. I don't know what the previous reviewer is talking about. Granted, El Campesino isn't going to compare to some fancy Mexican places in San Francisco, but for the area it's in, it's good. Certainly is better than the other options available in the area - Don Pablo's, which is overpriced crap on a plate, and Chi Chi's which is .... well, just gross. Not the best Mexican you'll have in your life, but it is nonetheless respectable. We have lived in the US for most of our lives, so we have eaten our share of crappy Mexican food, but El Campesino has failed to meet even our lowest expectations. Deluded by the delightfully spicy salsa (which turned out to be the best part of the meal), we ordered margaritas and standard fare. The margaritas arrived suspiciously quickly, and we were further skeptical about their greenish tinge. It appeared as if the glasses were colored, but... they were straight-up green, a peculiar shade of green that haas no place in a margarita. They were almost neon green, like Gatorade. Gatorade tastes better than those margaritas, and provides more electrolytes, too. Our entrees also arrived with surprising alacrity. Where do we begin? The government-issued cheese? The gray, runny refried beans? How about the ground beef, which was supposed to be chicken? As an aside, when we asked the waiter why there was ground beef instead of chicken, he said my brother hadn't spoken loud enough, and then walked off in a huff. We had to fight with him to take it off the check. Oh, the rice was okay. Sort of. In summary: we only spent $12 on our meal, and it still wasn't worth it. We should have gone to Taco Bell. Or eaten our cuticles. read more

We eat as a family at this restaurant about 3-4 times per week. We have been coming here for years. Normally, we have fast and friendly service. The restaurant itself is old and needs some repair but the service and food quality far out way that. Sadly tonight I had an experience that makes me want to never go again. We were seated. The place was half empty. No one came to take our order and ten minutes had passed without acknowledgement of any type. We were just about to get up and leave when the server finally acknowledged us. He rudely asked for our drink order. We explained to him we were ready to order because we had been waiting awhile. He rudely told us it was the people's fault next to us because he was helping them. This was a lie because we were seated directly beside them and he was no where to be found the entire time. Even if that were the truth, he could have just apologized and it would have been ok. Instead, he was nasty and started getting louder and ruder. I asked to see his manger and he laughed out loud in our faces as if I asked to speak to the president or something. He walked away. We decided this was crap and went to leave. As we approached the exit, he was talking to the manager about us and laughing at us. He again got smart with us in front of the manager. The managers solution was to reseat us and give us a different server. The manager said he knew us good, regular guests but mostly blew us off. We just left and won't be back. It's such a shame because most of the staff are nice and the food is pretty good but we'd prefer to be somewhere that we are treated like people instead of jokes. read more

What can I say...the best Mexican around. We have been going there since it opened about 20 years ago. We have tried every other Mexican restaurant and some were good but never like the El. I rarely write a review unless service is great, or in this case, not. First of all, love the food itself....the service on the other hand is another story. It seems the servers have attitudes and are cranky. Our server rushed us through the order and was clearly annoyed by any questions we had. He never smiled or thanked us, (he's experienced and has been with El Campesino's a long time). When the food arrived, the orders were shouted out in a panic..we could not understand what the other server said, so he got mad and quickly put the plates down on the table anywhere he could find a spot. Sure, they are hot, but if you can't speak fluent English, then how will customers know what you are saying? Again, food was great, but while finishing the last few bites, another came by and took our plates from under our mouths! It was sort of funny but not funny. We were not finished, but felt like were being told we had spent enough time. Not impressed this visit. Will reconsider where our group will be eating next time since there are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the area. BOO to El Campesino's. read more

I've been a customer since I was about 8 years old. I'm 25. My favorite dish is Chile Colorado. I've tried it at 10+ other "authentic" Mexican restaurants, and nobody else even comes remotely close. Actually, everyone elses tastes like they dumped a bunch of chili powder in it. Chips are excellent, salsa is the best I've ever had, the margaritas are always good. The atmosphere and decor are in serious need of an update. That's really the only negative that comes to mind. read more

We love the food here. There is a variety of Mexican dishes to satisfy most any member of your family. It's not our favorite Mexican place, but it is our favorite out of what is close and convenient. The portions are huge and the prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is dank and in desperate need of an update and overall cleaning. The seating areas are noisy and congested. Most of the wait staff speaks generally good English, but tend to loom in the entrance ways to the dining area and you can feel like they are staring at you while you are eating. They can be heard speaking among themselves in Spanish, especially when they think that you don't understand what they are saying. My youngest child has Autism and wanted to say goodbye in Spanish to which an employee responded by calling him "Cabrone", which anyone who speaks Spanish knows to be a derogatory term... I ushered my child to the car and thoroughly reprimanded the employee. It will not stop me from going there for dinner... like I said previously the place is close and the food is decent when you are in the mood for Mexican. read more

My wife and I have been going here for many years. We each have our regular dishes that we order....but sometimes venture into new dishes. Latest that I tried was a shrimp dish with a sauce so hot I could barely finish it. But I loved the taste, so I ordered again the next time we visited. Our server suggested a different hot sauce that still had a nice kick. Worked beautifully. Anyway...I love their quick service as well. So this time we dined in, and it was worse than take out. The margaritas are abysmal. Maybe the worst I've ever had. The chorizo dip was better this time, didn't taste burnt. The decor/environment is awful...it's loud and obnoxious with stuff falling apart. My meal was decent...I got the chefs special. The roast beef was good, but everything else was ok at best. First time here and not sure if we will go back. The only reason I would go back is the food was good, at least. We ordered a side of guacamole, sour cream and cheese dip, because the food does not come with any of this. You have to pay extra for more chips, not good. But the biggest reason I only gave a 2 star is the service was terrible. Our waiter was the most sour person, he never came back to see if we needed anything, if our food was alright, did we need something else to drink, very disappointing. He was just rude when he took our order. No we didn't leave a tip. The hostess did not even speak, she took our menus to our table, without so much as a word.
