Friendly staff. Fast service and food was great too. The salsa was puréed and reminded me of Spanish Garden type salsa. The fajitas were excellent and the chips and salsa were good too. One of our all-time favorites! The atmosphere was perfect with authentic Spanish music like you would hear at Epcot! I can never get enough of their salsa. We sometimes get it to go with a large bag of chips. My favorite has always been the taco burger. Their ground beef is delicious with just the right amount of seasoning. By far the worst dining experience I have ever had. Food was subpar, but the customer service was atrocious. We ordered two types of queso & they brought out the yellow queso with a layer of film on it so we kindly asked for a new queso. Our waiter grabbed the queso & as he was dumping it out he told us that was the last of the yellow queso for the night (it was 6pm on a Saturday night). All of the food came out lukewarm and when the checks came out... we saw that they had charged us twice for the white queso they brought out after the yellow queso was dumped that we thought was complimentary for the inconvenience. The waiter then proceeded to argue with us at the table over the $5 queso, and eventually slammed our cards on the table and raised his voice at us to tell us we could "run our cards ourselves"! At the front, the manager continued to argue with us for a while, only to finally admit that they had misunderstood something and she finally took off the queso. Dinner here tonight with family while staying in the area. Don't know how long this place has been open, but have been told by several since about 1980. Great salsa! I prefer it a little hotter (flavor) than what is served, but the flavor is very good. Chips could use a little work - might even be purchased chips? Service was fast, personable and efficient. Our party had a number of items - triple enchiladas, a combo plate, burritos, and quesadillas and ALL the food was well presented, well priced and very tasty. We also had a few Mexican Hot Chocolates. Wow are these good! A slightly cinnamon flavored, milk based, thicker hot chocolate than "typical" served hot and with a little extra in a stainless steel server. The chicken taco meat really stands out as some of the better I have had in a long time. The building could use some updating and repairs. When we "get the heck into Dodge City" again, we will be back for a good meal. read more

I grew up in the Dodge City area and have been enjoying El Charros for as long as I can remember. The salsa is homemade and great, but they have gotten a little stingy on the chips in recent years. El Charro is legendary in Dodge City. It's been around (and successful) for decades. Many people who visit Dodge are sent here for some of the best food in town, especially Mexican food. (Kate's is great for tacos and burgers, though!) The locals and the tourists both eat here. If you want a non-chain option (like Applebee's, Montana Mike's, etc) this is a good choice. There are even non-Mexican food items available as well. Give it a shot. Where do I start? Salsa was chili powder flavored. The California sauce which was their hotter salsa was better but still not worthy of more than one star. Enchilada was in a flour tortilla which we prefer corn. My beef burrito was more beans than any beef with no seasonings. Rice was flavorless and the soppapilla was just a fried biscuit without the open pocket for honey. Very very disappointed and we have eaten Mexican food from almost every state in the union as well as Several states in Mexico. Do not recommend at all. When El Charro first opened up (the late 80s early 90s?), it was clean, the décor was rustic but authentic. We were visiting family recently and we decided to drop in. THE PLACE IS FILTHY!! The décor that looked so nice when the restaurant first opened is now trashy, the carpet stinks (restaurants should NOT HAVE carpet!), the windows are dirty, tables ends are cracked and falling apart, the booth seats are cracked and the table chairs legs are chipped, cranked and looks trashy - as a matter of fact, the whole place looks trashy! People come to Dodge City for a real west experience, including authentic Mexican food. El Charro gives the whole City a bad impression!! read more

El Charro has been around for years and the recipes as well as the menu have not changed, Mexican food is their strength, however I believe they do have some american (burgers & such). I would highly recommend the Enchilada Delight. However, it does not matter what you order, you will be happy. Home made chips and the absolute best freshly made salsa. Dodge does not have a lot of choices. But, even if there were a lot, you would not be dissapointed with El Charro. read more

Dodge City is not often on my travel wishlist but when I visited, we had a nice lunch at El Charro. Small community so not too many options but I was pleasantly surprised by the meal. Everything is freshly made and the ladies running the place were so hospitable. We were in town for a few days and decided to give El Charro a try. We have El Charro restaurants near where we live, but this one was totally different. The food wasn't pre-packaged. It seemed that it was made fresh and it was delicious. The only complaint I have is that they force you to purchase a drink (it is included in the price of the dinners). Everything else was great. Rice OR beans served with the special, I was charged $1.85 for an small ice cream scoop size of dry Mexican rice. Sopapilla dessert was not worth the effort.
