My most recent experience here was frustrating, despite the food being really good. I stopped in while driving home from South Carolina after a 7 hour 30 minute drive and ordered two carne asada tacos, one pastor, and a steak gordita. It was advertised as free chips and salsa on Friday, but I was still charged. I pointed to the sign and said "cero" in my limited Spanish, but it didn't change anything. I didn't push it because I was exhausted and just wanted to eat. When I got home, I realized I didn't even receive the salsa I was charged for. The chips, tacos, and gordita were all fantastic. Just disappointing overall. I went out of my way to order in person instead of using DoorDash to support the restaurant, but I'm not sure that was the right call. read more

This place was average, at best. I've spent a lot of time in San Diego, so I know good Mexican food! I was hoping to find some here, but was a little disappointed. They have a "Weekly Specials Menu", but apparently it's for dine-in only. I ordered a burrito to-go, and it came with a side of rice and beans. The portions on those were quite small - probably because I wasn't dining in... The flavor of everything was actually quite good, but I got three bites with gristle that I had to spit out, which really put a damper on the meal. And the staff was just average. The steak was chewy the tacos were dry and I sat at the bar and waited for my food I asked if chips were included with meals they said no. First the employees are warm and gracious as you come in, the quaint restaurant is brightly colored and is an inviting place to eat. The food is amazing! Don't. This place was very disappointing and I was expecting it to be good. The place smelled like strong grease. I wanted tacos. They were out of chicken. So I ordered 2 pastor and 1 carne asada. I specifically asked for tacos Mexicano and specified cilantro and onion. The wait person confirmed. They came, almost no onion and no cilantro. I asked for more and was told they were out of cilantro. On top of that the meats were excessively greasy and the tortillas were soaked with grease. If you want tacos, go somewhere else. read more

this place is for real. Authentic Mexican. The lady in front knows a little bit of English but not much. You have to speak the language to some degree. We got the tacos al Pastor which by the way is not on the menu you need to ask for that. That's how you know again that it is authentic. The soaps were amazing. We also loved that Jamaica and Tamarindo. Their credit card reader doesn't work unfortunately so bring cash. But if you like real authentic Mexican food, this is a banger. read more

I just realized that I haven't written a review for Restaurante El Chido! One of my favorite places in the West End, for many reasons. --Food: The first reason is because everything is delicious. I've had their soft corn tacos with every kind of meat they have, birria tacos with consomme, hard tacos (Chipotle fried is what they are on the menu), sopes, gorditas, huaraches, elote, and probably other things that I'm forgetting about. My favorites: - Chipotle fried crispy tacos: I don't know how authentic crunchy tacos are or if they're an Americanized thing, but I loooove these. They come with pico de gallo, meat, cheese, and cabbage, and a side of salsas. I love the orange Salsa Roja too! My favorite is the picadillo (ground beef and potato) and the grilled chicken, but the pork and barbacoa are good too! - Soft tacos: Meat, onion, cilantro, and cabbage. At first I was getting it without cabbage, but now I'm sold. They're really solid. - Sope: Little edible masa plates topped with deliciousness? Yes please. I'll take two. - Birria: Where have you been all my life?! Beef tacos with cheese and a nice pan fried shell? With a beef soup to dip or sip? Love it. - The other things are good, but these are my favorite. --Cost: Super affordable. Costs around $15 for a filling meal. --Atmosphere: I'll be honest, I've only ever picked up food on the way home, but the inside looks nice enough! The plaza it's in is next to some other stores in the Food Lion lot, so it's incredibly easy to find parking. It's nothing fancy, but it does what it sets out to do. --Service: Everyone at pickup is incredibly nice. Always a good experience. --Overall: I don't order from here 2 to 3 times a week because I don't like it, haha, I'll just say that. Food is very affordable and very tasty, what more can you ask for? It's not the most glorious place but it doesn't claim to be. Love this place! If I could go everyday, I really would. it really is my comfort food . If my friends asked me where I wanna go to eat this is always the place. I would say it's the most authentic Mexican street food in Richmond. My usual meal cost about $10-$15 at most and I get two tostadas and a large Horchata. Stopping in here was my nephew's idea. He'd had the Birria Tacos before and loved them, so I thought I'd give them a try. This is a casual, no frills spot where you order and pay at the counter, they bring you your food out, and you bus your own table. The menu is a bit overwhelming. Signs and photos posted everywhere. Very Mexico street food vibe. Smoky kitchen. It helps if you speak Spanish so you understand what you're getting, though the staff speaks English pretty well. The Birria Tacos come with a soup that tastes exactly like the tacos (good). The shell is fried cheese. You get three. Tasty. Everything is very authentic Mexican. My taco hunter adventures lead me to El Chido! I was on a quest to try authentic Barria tacos with consume. When I pulled up to the restaurant I was a little confused with the name! The store front sign said Los Camoles. Thankfully the sign on the door said "El Chido" so I knew I was in the right place. The store front windows are plastered with some of the different food options they have which is very enticing. Buyer be ware the menu is mostly in Spanish! Thankfully I know a little Spanish so I could move quickly thru the menu without having to ask "what's this" every few minutes! The staff was very pleasant and wore gloves and masks. The food was a little on the pricey side compared to other places I've been. The Barria tacos were okay-ish. There seemed to be a a big lag in flavor with every item we ordered additional spices and herbs were needed. The absolute best place to eat authentic Hispanic food. Being from Texas I'm super picky on my Hispanic foods and this place is so good that eat here almost weekly. Came here with a few friends for dinner and ordered two tacos (asada and al pastor), which were $3 each. If you can be full off of 2 or 3 tacos, that's under $10 per meal - a solid deal. My other friends got birria tacos ($16 for 2 tacos) that came with a cup of soup. It looked really good and I wish I got that, but alas, regular tacos are also amazing. Tacos arrived soon after and they were pretty big in size, so $3 per taco makes more sense. The only caveat for me is that it comes in flour tortillas (I think you have to ask for it to be corn, so I'll know that for the future). Both tacos were solid in terms of taste - seasoning was perfect and I doused the salsa verde on that which gave it an extra kick. I liked how the meat for both asada and al pastor were chunkier in size (less fine). The asada was juicy and tasty! The al pastor is marinated and cooked with onions which gave it extra flavor and texture. I'm not usually a fan of onions, but tasted great in these tacos. Both tacos were great and I'd happy get them again the next time I stop by. read more

I've been frequenting the food truck on Staples Mill for a year now every time I'm hard up for tacos. But I've been hearing so much about the birrias tacos that I had to make trip to the brick and mortar shop. Don't let the fact that it's in a strip mall deter you from checking this gem out! The food is incredible. We ordered some chips and salsa to snack on while we waited for our tacos. They have legit from scratch chips! They are so damn good. But these tacos. The Lord rained down the goodness on me with these delightful, perfectly crisp, cheesy stuffed meat babies. And that consumme! So flavorful and had loads of tender brisket. I ordered myself a Pambazo and when it came out it was soggy and it barely had any filling no queso fresco like the menu said or sour cream WORST PAMBAZO I've ever had. Being from Texas I guess my tastebuds are different than the folks out here who claim to know good tacos lol. I finally found them here! The cachete and barbacoa tacos were amazing! We dipped in the tacos in the consomé and it was heaven in my mouth! I almost fell on the floor in a good way after biting into the elotes loco! They let me try some of the food afterwards and everything was amazing! I recently went back and ordered all of the same dishes that they let me try. So good! Overall the food was good, we dined in (4 of us). They were pretty busy so the wait for food was longer than expected. It was also pretty hot inside so we were all a tad bit too warm while waiting. The chicharrones preparrados was really yummy, glad we ordered that while we waited for the rest. The tortas were pretty big, on a different style of bread than I'm used to which allowed the torta to be filled pretty well. I did take a bite of the torta que me miras and liked it. Tacos good with nice portion of meat, flavorful. Sauces good. All the sweets we tried tasted good. The churros came with ice cream, but it was a very small portion of ice cream and I thought was supposed to be neopolitan but there was no strawberry ice cream only vanilla and a little dash of chocolate. Tres leches was good. The fried cheese cake was yummy but the amount of cheese cake in it was very minimal, wish there was more filling, I felt like the proportion was off.
