One word comes to mind when I think of Lolita's: Authentic. For starters. I ordered the guacamole and chips which set the bar. Texture is key for me and the guacamole was a perfect consistency accompanied by a side of fresh corn chips;.followed by the cauliflower steak entree which was tastefully done. Good flavor profile. I appreciate the vegetarian options as they are hard to find locally with most businesses. Staff, drinks, and ambience were exceptional. An impressive experience overall. Unfortunately, my second trip was a miss. I ordered the same menu items. The portion of the guac was significantly less and the texture was a whipped consistency (similar to baby food) and no flavor at all. Our first time at Lolita's and definitely not our last. The food was amazing and we enjoyed our drinks too. There were a ton of specialty cocktails I don't remember what my husband ordered but it was tequila based. I had the spritz. This was the most filling quesadilla I have ever had and literally could only eat half. Prawns were great too. The sauce at the bottom was delicious I imagine avocado based. My husband loved his steak and found it cooked perfectly and incredibly seasoned but still refreshing because of the cucumber, fresh avocado, and jalapeños. My friend smelled the food and saw a few delicious plates as we walked by. We decided to give it try. Love that there's open airy seating and the decor is interesting. Our waitress was very nice and super attentive. We ordered the three Salsa dips, corn dip, and carne asada fries. We loved that the corn and salsa came with whole corn tortillas vs typical chips. This little spot in Carytown is a hidden gem with such good food! The place is vibrant yet cozy. The host and server were great. Stopped in on a Monday - with all day happy hour specials for food and drinks. We enjoyed the guacamole, the tacos and the beverages. Came here on a Sunday evening and made a reservation (though I'm not sure one is needed, since there were quite a few tables available). I love when local joints are actually owned and operated by hispanohablantes :) Started with the Sueño Maya which was delightful. I had the Gobernador tacos and my husband had carne asada. Both were excellent. The homemade salsas/sauces were super tasty! The second drink I ordered was honestly just not my thing (El Norteño). Too bitter and had to switch it for something else. The waitress was happy to do so. I landed on the Bruja de Verde. Very good, but never something I'd make at home. The drink list was honestly quite strange. Only about 3 drinks out of 12 appealed to us. The dessert list looked amazing but we didn't have an appetite by the time dinner was done. Would recommend a visit to Lolita's! Un placer! read more

We loved the guac appetizer and the coconut horchata was a decent opener for brunch; it's on the sweet side so would have preferred paying less for a smaller glass. I got the Huevos Rancheros with suadero which was delicious. Filling but not too heavy for a decent price -these days. My husband got Chicken tacos which were good but did not blow him away and there was a little gristle which was not pleasant. My son got the taco de huevo and thought it okay. My boyfriend and I decided to check out this restaurant for a date night that included seeing a movie at The Byrd afterwards (right across the street). We got there a little earlier than our reservation, and they were able to accommodate us. Unfortunately either their air conditioning was not working properly or they thought leaving the front door open on a 90 degree day was "welcoming", but it was rather warm in the restaurant because of it. Also, flies. It was very busy at happy hour, but it still took our waitress way too long to get to us. We ordered some drinks & appetizers and then some mains. I got the octopus, which was a beautiful presentation, but a bit chewy. My boyfriend got tuna tostaditas and said they had great flavor. As we were eating, the hostess was cleaning the table next to ours and dropped her cleaning bottle. Cleaner solution went flying out all over the floor and all up our legs. Accidents happen, and she was very apologetic, but it kind of put a damper on the night. I would like to try this place again sometime, maybe on a less-busy night/time. read more

This taco restaurant is absolutely outstanding! From the moment we walked in, the ambience set the tone--the decor is intentional, modern, and beautifully representative of Mexican cuisine. You can tell a lot of thought went into creating a space that feels both authentic and elevated. The staff could not have been friendlier. They welcomed us with smiles, made fantastic menu recommendations, and the service was impressively quick without ever feeling rushed. We started with cocktails--mine was a watermelon and tequila special that was incredible, and my husband's piña colada-style drink was just as delicious. For an appetizer, we ordered guacamole and chips. The chips were unlike the typical basket you might expect--authentic, unique, and perfectly paired with the guac. For entrées, I had the chicken asada tacos and he had the fish tacos. Both came out beautifully plated and tasted even better than they looked--fresh, flavorful, and very filling. We also tried two sides: the Mexican rice (so flavorful and a perfect complement to the tacos) and the potatoes, which my fiancé absolutely loved. Mexican cuisine is my favorite, and I can honestly say this was one of the most authentic yet modern takes I've had. Lolita's has been a favorite for us. The bar team is superb, Adan's cocktails are world class, and our servers have consistently been gracious. Shoutout to Gonzalo in particular, who is a treasure. On this visit my chicken tacos were soft and delicious, exactly what I wanted. The problem was a snapper crudo that tasted off to both of us on the first bite. We stopped immediately and sent it back out of basic food-safety caution. It was the second time we have encountered questionable seafood here; on a prior visit we were told there had been a supplier change. When we asked for a manager, the interaction turned combative in a way that surprised us. Instead of starting with an apology and removal, we heard two refrains that put us on trial: that this was the "second time with you," and that management "knew" the fish was not old. We were not seeking drama or a post-mortem on provenance. We were reporting a simple sensory claim about what was in front of us and declining to keep eating it. Arguing with guests at the table about whether their palates are wrong is not service recovery. The standard response in hospitality is straightforward: remove the item, comp or replace if appropriate, and investigate offstage. We asked to be left to our drinks because the exchange had become adversarial. The manager later returned quietly to clear the plate, which we appreciated as an attempt to normalize the moment, but the damage to the evening was done. My wife was rattled and left in tears. To be clear, the floor staff and bar team remained excellent throughout, and we tipped our server for that. We plan to keep coming for the cocktails and the dishes we have always enjoyed. For now we will avoid seafood here, since two experiences have shaken our confidence. More importantly, we hope management re-centers hospitality when handling food-safety concerns. A guest who says an item tastes off should feel believed and cared for, not cross-examined. Remove it, make it right, and take any investigation away from the table. Do that, and the reputation the bar team has earned will be matched by leadership on the floor. read more

Lolita's was a whole entire vibe in and of itself. First of all, we were sat at the best seat in the entire house. The doors were wide open, it was a windy day, but we were sat right in the middle of inside & outside. We had a (normally) soft breeze, as opposed to the outside people, and we had the inside vibe of their interesting & unique decor. The host was great from the moment we walked up- I felt truly welcomed, which is so rare these days. We were seated immediately (on a Saturday around 2pm, mind you- the middle of a crazy lunch & early dinner rush), and again, had VIP (or so it felt) seating. I wanted to go here when I saw they had blue corn tortillas from other reviews. I couldn't believe it. I haven't had blue corn anything since I was visiting my family in NM. I had the chicken pastor tacos, and they were supreme. It came with two, and was loaded with chicken. My lovely lady had the carnitas loaded fries, which were more like home fries a diced potatoes. She really liked them a lot. We both had a drink (I had the Frida special, which was surprisingly made of gin, not tequila). Then we went to the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the VMFA, which was just close by. A prime late May Day spent in beautiful Richmond. (Sidenote: I will also say I think these were blue & yellow corn tortillas, or some other less dense masa than blue corn masa. I want this past week with my husband and we tried out the calamari and it was so delicious! Crispy, well seasoned, and we loved the chipotle crema that was with it. Had a wonderful dining experience at Lolita's, especially by way of the ambiance and gorgeous aesthetic, which always makes me want to up my trendy decor game. Their salsas come as a trio sampler, each with a different heat level and vibrant flavor profile ranging across sweet and smoky tones + tostadas instead of chips which adds to the stellar vibes here. I had the chicken quesadilla, which was delicious and cheesy but overall average - portions are a bit on the smaller side for the price too. I am not a fan of flan but my friend tried the cacao flan and seemed to enjoy it. Service was quick and friendly. Lolita's is located in the middle of Carytown which is perfect for meet-ups, especially if you're looking for Mexican food that is on the nicer side in terms of ambiance and food presentation (plus they have happy hour M-F w/ $6 margs which are great!). We met a couple here on a Thursday evening. It is located downtown with only street parking. We parked on the block behind the restaurant fairly easily. We had a reservation and were seated timely. The service was good. The menu is not huge like you see at other mexican style places. We got there for a happy hour order and my wife got a margarita which was good. However, when the couple we were meeting arrived, it was past happy hour. She ordered a margarita and it was double in size to the happy hour one.. so just know you are getting a lower price but a MUCH small drink. The food was good but servings were smaller than what you see normally at a Mexican restaurant. Overall, i think you go for the atmosphere which was nice. It is decorated modern inside. You get plenty of guacamole, which is appreciated, but only about a quarter of the chips you actually need to enjoy it properly. Consider this a friendly nudge to order an extra basket. Service can be on the slower side, especially when the restaurant is crowded, so it is not the place to rush through a meal. That said, the space itself makes up for some of the wait. The vibe is casual but polished, with a beautiful interior and really pretty pink tile work throughout. The booths are especially fun if you come with a larger group and want to settle in for the evening. I visited Lolita's almost over two years ago for tacos and hadn't been back since. Earlier this year an old college friend was in town and we all decided to get together for some drinks. Lolita's is super trendy and cute. Their cocktails are amazing here. I came back for the cocktails and happened to get some lunch too. I'm so happy I tried more food because I really enjoyed my tuna tostada. My fiancé devoured his tacos. My college friend and his girlfriend loved their orders too. Our waitress was super kind and attentive. She checked on us enough times and could tell we were old friends catching up so didn't make us feel rushed either. It was not too long after Christmas when we visited and I got an incredible drink called Merry spritzmas. The presentation of food and drinks here are A+. They look so good in photos. I also love how they can open the screen doors on nicer days. It's a really nice spot in Carytown. They have single bathroom stalls here. Celiac- Gluten- free Review Lolita's has my WHOLE heart. Their gluten-free options may not be extensive, but they're enough, and they are done WELL (no dedicated fryers just FYI). Let me also give nuance to my love of Lolita's by saying first and foremost that I had the best cocktail I've ever had here, the Hotboxed Ferrari (Siete Misterios Mezcal, Byrrh, Piña, Campari, Fernet Branca, Cinnamon Deme, Salted Grapefruit Foam). I am rabid for Mezcal. I want to kiss the mixologist who developed this drink, because it is absolutely a balance of flavors that showcases the beautiful and perfect smokiness of Mezcal and good grief I almost fell out after my first sip. *deep breaths* So we just continue riding this wave of joy with the salsa and tostadas. Three types of salsas with unique flavors and different levels of heat. All three incredible. Blue-corn tostadas made in-house. And then a bowl of pozole verde. This damn sopa had me in a chokehold as well because how was everything perfect??? The textures, the flavors...I think I might have forgotten where I was because I got lost in that bowl. Best pozole verde I've ever had. Ordered the Choripapa and Suadero tacos- at this point I really could have ordered just one because your girl was almost at maximum capacity. The tacos are not cheap- ranging from $11-14- but to their credit, they do not skimp on the fillings and the flavors are top tier. Add in those fresh blue corn tortillas and you have a combination that truly did not miss in any way, shape, or form. Only disappointment I encountered the entire night was one of the drinks on the menu not actually being available (the frozen horchata-pumpkin colada), but my bartender made me a horchata coffee cocktail that definitely made up for it. Shout out to her, because she was throwing down on them drinks. So. True artistry experienced throughout the night, from the cocktails to the food. The atmosphere is so cool inside too, definitely a light summery feel which is a nice respite from this crazy winter blast we're experiencing at the moment.
