I had been to Potros twice before a few years back and knew it was tasty, so I suggested it for dinner last night. We opted to sit inside, and there was a mariachi band playing throughout the dinner. It was extremely loud. If you want a chiller vibe, sit on the patio. I ordered the same item I had during my last two visits in 2022: their house specialty taco salad. From the presentation and the top bit, it looked really good. That is until I broke a piece of the shell off and a mini waterfall of grease started spilling out of it. I then realized the beef was almost entirely swimming in grease. It took some time to wave over a server, who grabbed a manager and offered to put something else in for me. At that point, I was pretty full, so I just asked for one hard shell taco. The beef in that was also pretty greasy but not overpowering like the salad. My stomach wasn't thrilled with me. It's sad too - the flavors were all there, but they need to drain their beef better. I tried a bite of their tres leches cake and it was delightful. I am sure I just ordered the wrong item. I wouldn't rule out a return visit to try something else, but it wouldn't be top of my list either.
I had a strawberry mojito and it was really good. Service was quick and everything moved smoothly. I also ordered the arroz con pollo and it was very flavorful and the portion was big. The vibe in the restaurant was nice and relaxed. I would go back!
First time here and I fell in love. The food was seasoned well! Chicken avocado tacos were delicious. Friend ordered a shrimp dish which was equally as delicious. Omg the drinks ! They offer the big big cup for only $22, I'm from NY so to me that's a steal! They get crowded pretty fast! My server was really nice and friendly! Also please try the guac, and cheese dip 10/10
Great atmosphere and service! There were birthdays being celebrated and everyone was joined in to celebrate. The food and drinks were delicious. My family of 7 got seated almost immediately and our waiter was great! I had the Burrito Texans and it was good! It had lots of beef and little chicken or shrimp, but it was smothered in cheese which I loved. I also had a passion fruit margarita and strawberry mojito . Both were very sweet, but the margarita had a good balance of tequila and passion fruit. I'll definitely be returning!
Did a search and found this place nearby. First good sign - the place was busy on a Monday night. Potros has a big menu and big drink. Had a 'medium' draft beer - it was huge! I was seated immediately and brought chips and salsa. The salsa was good but chips seemed 'store bought'. Decided to try the El Comal: chorizo, steak and chicken with a queso sauce, rice and beans and tortillas. Like the drink, the meal was huge, had a nice spice seasoning while the rice was not over powering. Would come back the next time I'm in town.
The more you go, the more they know you, in this family establishment. Excellent service and a diverse menu. The chips and salsa were very good, but the food was Awesome! After living on the west coast for almost 20 years, it's so hard to find good Mexican food in Richmond. I finally found it. First, for their cheese sauce, they actually used cheese. Their Mole was Oaxacan styled.... Absolutely delicious. I could eat here every week.
We were seated quickly and served water while we looked over the menu. They have a lot of seating so we chose to sit outback due to warm weather. They served chips with queso cheese and salsa which were not warm or fresh . The sauce was good and made up for the disappointment of no fresh chips. We waited a bit to get our order taken and when the food came I was impressed. I ordered the Pollo Asado and it was DELICIOUS. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the refried rice and beans were yummy. I couldn't care less for the service as i'm starting to notice a pattern with going out to certain areas . I will leave my remarks when I leave on how I was treated. Besides the service the food was excellent... I may go back but for take out only !!!
Our family had dinner here the other day and it was excellent. My husband got the special and it was amazing. I got the fajitas for two so we would have some to take home. I had a medium margarita and my husband had a large. My only complaint was, I got the wrong drink as mine said it had peppers in it. The area is small so the tables are really packed in. The food arrived quickly and the chips and salsa held us over until it did. The menu is extensive, definitely something for everyone.

My son & I's favorite Mexican restaurant. The food is delish, the service is great, the decor in the restaurant is beautiful, & a plus is that the restaurant is down the street from my house. I definitely recommend. read more

It's been a number of years since my last review of Potros so it is time for an update. Go for the service. Go for the food. Go for the mariachi band when they are there. Okay, maybe skip the last one. We love this place for the tableside guac, the ample portions of well seasoned chicken / beef / beans/ cheese / shrimp inside of the various offerings. We love the salsa they serve with chips, which is obviously house made as the heat level and amount of cilantro change from time to time. We love the manager checking every table. The prices are great and so is the service. If spicy stuff is your thing, I recommend the tacos a la diabla, and be sure to add the sauce to them. You will thank me. read more
Potros is great! Their food is comforting and the prices are very reasonable. Their menu is massive so there's surely something to please everyone. The restaurant was packed during weekday lunch. My order was ready on time and packaged very thoughtfully and in a box. They seem to have special deals occasionally. We placed an order online over $30 and received free soft beef tacos. Our order also came with complimentary chips, salsa, and white sauce. The arroz con pollos came with a side of tortillas. read more

Our family had dinner here the other day and it was excellent. My husband got the special and it was amazing. I got the fajitas for two so we would have some to take home. I had a medium margarita and my husband had a large. My only complaint was, I got the wrong drink as mine said it had peppers in it. The area is small so the tables are really packed in. Super cool spot near the Amtrak. Service was quick. Restaurant was very clean and the drink menu looked awesome. I got the quesadilla deluxe off the lunch menu and it was very filling. They are very generous on the chicken portions! read more
Potros is a delicious and unique spot for authentic Mexican cuisine! Tucked away at the end of a strip mall near Kroger Marketplace off Staples Mill Road, you'll find an open feel restaurant with a gorgeous bar and expansive patio. Their large menu will be sure to please anyone! They have many different protein options as well as vegetarian & vegan options! Service was prompt and attentive throughout our meal & food was flavorful & portion sizes were more than generous! Highly recommend checking this place out!! read more

Tuesday July 19,2022 5:50pm My first visit here. The last minute I remembered it was taco Tuesday so I decided to go to this restaurant because it was the nearest to me in my search and I had four stars. When I first arrived I went to the bathroom. The bathroom was clean except the changing table for infants. The sheet on that table was gross. I wouldn't even lay my purse on it much less a baby. I don't know if you can tell by my photos but trust me. I really like the decor. I like the decor of most Mexican restaurants anyway. This one did seem a bit crowded as far as furniture. See picture. I ordered a passion fruit daiquiri with vodka instead of rum. I didn't taste any liquor, at all, however, the Daiquiri was good anyway. For dinner I ordered Fajitas tropical. This came with pineapple which was the main reason I ordered it because it sounded like it taste really good. Well, when it came I didn't see any pineapple. I brought this to the attention of the waitress and even took a fork and went through it and saw no pineapple. She said it was cut up really small. Not acceptable. If you got pineapple in the title of the meal I'm gonna need to at least see the pineapple. Anyway she brought me out some pineapple in a bowl. Once I had my fajitas tropical I must say it was really good. I did not care for the beans or the rice. Usually salsa is too spicy for me at Mexican restaurants but there's was really good. Unfortunately I had to ask for more three different times before I got it. But yeah, overall I gave it three stars mostly for the inconsistency of service and food. I'm undecided on if I will go back or not. read more
It was Cinco de Mayo so I needed to get Mexican for dinner. I was looking through the extensive menu and saw a couple of items that I wanted but was disappointed when I tried to order online that both of those items were not on the list. I would have waited at the restaurant but one of the dishes that I wanted (seafood soup) would take 20 minutes to make. So I settled for the steak and shrimp. I was very pleased to see that it was ready for pick up when I arrived. It was also a very good portion. I wasn't expecting the chips and salsa and wraps but it is a given as with other Mexican places. I liked the flavors of the entire entree. However, the steak was a little rough to chew. If I get the opportunity to come back while I'm in the area, I would still like to try the other dishes that I initially wanted. read more

Great lunch location; you always have doubts about strip mall spots but this place really came through. We grabbed a frozen margarita and one on the rocks; both good and balanced, not too ok much nicer. For the appetizer we had bacon wrapped shrimp which is an absolute must if you like either bacon or shrimp. The tacos were ok, I was hoping that it would come with a side of lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and sour cream but they'll bring it out if you ask for it. This place is a solid option if you're looking for good Mexican food. One last thing, on Thursday they have a mariachi band. Plan accordingly read more

Hands down the best local Mexican restaurant in the area! The staff is always friendly, the food doesn't take too long, and there's plenty of seating inside or outside. Rib-eye tacos - 9/10: you get three tacos filled with steak, grilled onions and two mini bowls of refried beans and guacamole. Nachos Texanos - 1000/10: crispy tortilla chips topped with grilled shrimp, chicken and steak, onions, peppers, tomatoes, drizzled with cheese dip. Arroz con pollo - 9/10: grilled chicken, onions and mushrooms sautéed and served over a bed of rice drizzled with cheese dip -- I do wish there were vegetables mixed it. Inside there is a full bar, several large screen tvs, and cute decorations! read more
I think I just found my new favorite Mexican restaurant and bonus it's close to my house . Staff is very welcoming and the have a nice patio to sit outside. The menu has a large variety as well. Our meal came out fast and portions were huge . The Michelada was perfect with the right amount of kick and tang. The caldo de res was huge and so satisfying. Big chunks of beef and the both was perfect, you could probably split this between two people. The jalapeño, onion, and cilantro was very fresh . The actual soup didn't have that many vegetables but did come with the standard corn, carrot, and some potato's . The arroz texano was full of favor and not too salty . The dish had a nice amount of meat and the mix of peppers/ onions added freshness. Best part was the rice which was soft and flavorful. Food came out fast and was very fresh. Service was top notch and the restaurants was very clean. You can also place Togo orders as well. Go check it out! The menu has a huge variety that fits all types of tastes. read more
Potros (loose translation, "Wild Stallions") was jumping the evening we walked in for dinner. Almost a full house, cacophonous and clearly a popular casa Mexicana. We were led to a corner booth under a painting of two rearing equines, and promptly handed menus and ask for our drink order (dos margaritas, sin sel, por favor). Our entree choices included steak fajitas and quesadilla relleno, both with sides of red rice, pinto beans and guacamole. We expected the fajitas would be served sizzling as part of the table entertainment, but received the cast iron platter with the beef already fully grilled and mixed with onion and pepper way past the sizzle. Rather than being on fire, with crisp snapping veggies, it was delivered long after that prime moment when everything just lay quietly on the plate. Disappointing. The "stuffed"quesadilla was loaded with grilled chicken, queso and the same root veggies as above. It was much more satisfying than the steak as it was very hot and flavorful. Service was spotty, but forgivable given the crowd. Just wish they provided more napkins at jump and sent around the water pitcher more frequently. Still, we have enjoyed far better Mexican (and better margaritas) elsewhere, and would not return to ride these wild horses again. read more
