Can I just rave about Casa del Barco for a second? We stumbled upon this while attending a concert in Richmond and had to grab some dinner. This place absolutely blew me away, and I'm already plotting my return. First off, the atmosphere is GORGEOUS. From the moment you walk in, you're surrounded by unique decor, funky lighting, and an overall vibe that's both upscale and inviting. It's a perfect spot for a fun night out with friends or an easy date night. The bar alone is worth mentioning. I grabbed a Corona Premier to start, and my friend went all-in with their Jalepeno Verde margarita--tequila, muddled jalapeños, fresh lime, and agave. It packed a punch and was the right level of spicy, super refreshing. The bartender was incredibly helpful, answering all our random cocktail questions and making suggestions based on what we liked. Seriously, above and beyond! Food-wise, we started with the 3 Amigos appetizer--guacamole, queso, salsa, and tortilla chips. The guacamole was fresh and bright, but honestly, the queso was to die for. Creamy, rich, and served piping hot; I could have eaten a bowl by myself. For entrees, my friend and I couldn't possibly decide (pro-tip: bring a buddy and split!). We split the Carne Asada Burrito and the Casa Crunch Burrito. The carne asada had citrus-herb beef, rice, black beans, jack cheese, fresh lettuce, pico de gallo, and more of that dreamy queso. Every bite was layered with different flavors, super juicy and satisfying. The Casa Crunch Burrito which was crunchy adobo chicken, black beans, jalapeño crema, and all the fixings. It was just as unreal. Each burrito was huge, stuffed to the brim, and bursting with flavor. I literally can't wait to go back and have those burritos again. We arrived on a Thursday night around 8 o'clock at the ever daunting and strange Brown Box Plaza parking lot. There are usually spaces available, but it is a confusing parking situation. We were seated in moments of arriving after a brief walk to the door from the parking lot. The atmosphere is authentically Mexican with no shortage of bottle-related wall furnishings or decor. The stairway in the front entrance, the chandelier, and the rafter hangings are among my favorites. Our server was Don (that may be wrong, I didn't get the printed reciept before leaving), who reminded me of a professional linebacker, was soft spoken and attentive. He was there when we needed him, and out of sight when we didn't. I ordered the Empanadas and Sweet Plantains for my entree and my partner opted for the Baja Crunch Burrito. We had been here before, so knew about what to expect from the kitchen. My empanadas were light and fluffy with some delightful flavors and added peppers, compared to other Sysco-style empanadas I have had. With only two small pouches for 10 bucks, I was disappointed. The sweet plantains were cooked to perfection, a little crisp and a little smooth and creamy. Suggestion: the empanadas and plantains would make a great entree for $12-14. The crispy chicken burrito was passable. My partner said, "The rice was slightly crunchy and the burrito was not as hot and tasty as last time." We decidedly went with the churros for dessert. I cannot tell you what they put in them, but I can tell you that every bite was as exquisite as the last. Absolute legend. Our server Ben, Don, whatever your name was, you were excellent. We came to Casa del Barco for a family dinner, and everything was wonderful! I started with the Blueberry Basil Margarita, which was absolutely divine. For my entrée, I ordered the Casa Crunch Burrito. It was incredibly filling and flavorful, and the chicken was seasoned very well. My brother also ordered a burrito--I can't remember its name, but it was topped with queso and tasted delicious. My mother had the Birria de Res Tacos, which came with an incredibly flavorful consommé. Dipping the tacos took them to another level, although they were delicious enough to stand on their own. Our server, Alondra, was wonderful. She greeted us with a smile, remained attentive, and helped make our experience even more enjoyable. The queso, guac, and salsa are delicious with the right amount of kick, though maybe a bit too much spice for my weak stomach to be mixing with drinks at the bar. The chips are fresh and delicious. My friend got a guava cocktail with tajin on the rim and she loved it. I ordered a Californian Wheat Beer that was alright, it had a unique taste that I haven't had in other wheat beers, but it was still enjoyable. The bartender immediately asked to fill our water bottles as we entered and I knew the service would be exceptional. I used to frequent Casa Del Barco but haven't been in recent years. The location on the canal is super cute and convenient to many downtown locations. I was disappointed that the menu, which used to be very clearly labeled with gluten free items, had very few gluten free items marked. In fact, one item that was marked gluten free included fried shrimp and a flour tortilla (not gluten free) but the bean and rice bowl I ordered was gluten free but not labeled. This new menu presents very real safety concerns for people with allergies. We considered going elsewhere before ordering but the server on this trip was incredible, checking with the chef about gluten safe items which is how we identified the bowl was still safe for me. The food was good and the service was great but, if you have food allergies or intolerances, use caution. If you have Celiac, do not eat there. I shouldn't have risked it and got sick quickly. read more

I come to Casa Del Barco for the vibes. It's right on the canal so there are stunning outdoor seating options as well as plenty of great seating indoors with really nice natural lighting. Service is pretty quick here and there are a lot of food options. Every time I've been here, the food I've ordered is fine. I will say I've enjoyed their guacamole fresco! On my last visit, I got the baja fish burrito and found myself wishing there was a bit more seasoning and flavor. Parking was a bit of a pain, but we were looking forward to trying this place. It was pretty empty, and we sat out on the patio, which was actually really pleasant. Our initial server was great, but things went downhill from there. About an hour before closing, we decided we wanted to order food (just appetizers), and a different waitress told us the kitchen was closed. We stayed, finished our drinks, and I later saw other tables ordering--so clearly, that wasn't true. The margaritas were also a letdown. Expensive and underwhelming--I ordered a frozen strawberry margarita and got a regular lime one with only layer of strawberry. Not what I expected, and definitely not worth the price. The food and the service were both meh...Tacos were extremely small and the meat in the burritos was overcooked to the point that it was crunchy. We were a large party and our food not only took a VERY long time, but it then came out at different times creating that awkward sit-there- with-your-food-in-front-of-you-until-others-around-you-get-their-food. I wish happy hour was included in the entire restaurant and patio but you have to sit at bar, which can be less appealing especially if you have several people in your party. They do have some high-tops nearby the bar, but due to the structure of the building the tables have a huge column in the middle and can make it difficult to have a conversation with other members of your party.
