Women were busy preparing the corn husks, making masa, and steaming while we were there. Each person was given the choice of either pineapple or strawberry sweet tamales, with most duo groups choosing to sample one of each. Both were different and good...because rice flour had been added to the dough for more airiness, the consistency and sweetness reminded me of sweet korean rice cake. As expected, the strawberry mixed in more around the cake while the pineapple were mixed in as small chunks. I liked the pineapple, and is something I will look for when back in Long Beach. We also got to sample some masa drink, sweetened with vanilla and sugar. It was served scalding, and even on a hot day, most of our group couldn't stop drinking it. The tacos came out beautifully crisp on the outside and packed with tender, flavorful birria. Topped with fresh onion and cilantro and served with a rich consommé for dipping; every bite was deeply satisfying. It was very filling, delicious, and easily one of the best food deals we've found in Puerto Vallarta.
