Food is spectacular, we got alambre de pastor/de pollo. Portions were smaller, and cost was pretty high ($220 for each plate). We noticed that (as common in PDC) our mixed drinks did not have liquor in them. We thought we found a honest restaurant but it seems they have trickery too, so we won't be going back. Service is nuanced too; we had a great server the first time and a server that misheard us and didn't ask again the second time. First server seemed happy with a small/moderate tip, while second didn't even say thanks for the same tip (when we went a second time). Ambiance is okay... part of the restaurant is next to the road outside and chairs are within "grabbing" distance, which makes leaving a purse hanging or just not watching your back a bit stressful. We also got approached by multiple people offering roses made out of folded leaves... and had to continuously say that "no, we didn't want it". read more

The tacos were good but not outstanding. They were just on par with some of the tacos at the all-inclusive resort we were staying in. The service was slow coming out with our tacos. I think this place is overhyped by foreigner reviews. There are probably better Mexican food spots in the area. The prices were very affordable here though. Remember if they ask if you want something to drink, the water isn't free. They will charge you for bottled water since the tap isn't drinkable in Mexico. Was not my favorite spot. I wanted to like much better than I did based on the reviews of others. We came here for non fussy tacos . We had carne tacos, al pastor, and charro beans. The charro beans were mostly broth and no beans the waiter quickly corrected that. We also started with queso fundito with chorizo. It was very greasy as it sometimes is but could have easily be de-greased before serving. The taco shop is open air on a small side street , well lit. The price point was inexpensive and non fussy. Well even though it was hot and humid I can't pass up good soup. Also ordered pastor taco, rib meat taco, taco El special, chicken taco, and arrachera taco. Started off with guac and pico which came out with nice presentation. Guac was very yummy and pico tasted very fresh.. They also brought out typical topping of onion, cilantro, and limes. Red Sala and green habanero salsa which weren't spicy at all. Pastor taco was very yummy, no pine apple in this one. Rib taco was OK, meat was little on the tough size. Taco El special was also very tasty. Chicken taco was yummy. Nice and tender chicken.. Arrachia taco was also very yummy.. Missed out on the grill taste of the meat but still good. Caldo de res was soooo yummy. Nice beefy broth, the meat was still tender. I told the owner it was one of the best caldo de res I've had so far.. He was very happy and honored to hear that. While I was full owner decided he wanted me to try the oyster ceviche. So he brought me a small sample.. Well I haver to say. I have never had oyster ceviche.. It was sooo good. I guess since I love raw oyster this was extra yummy to me. Of course now I had to order one dish.. Sample wasn't quite enough. I scarfed down that order in no time.. I use to eat here once a week because my AirBNB was less than 5 minutes away. I then moved to another AirBNB across town and no longer came here as often. I decide to walk here one afternoon because I missed their tacos so much. I came by and was instantly greeted by all the nice employees. I order a couple tacos for take out. Once I came home and started eating them they were not as I remembered. Still good but not as good as before. I got the chicken tacos..which were fine. They did taste better with a sprinkle of salt and a bunch of salsa. I also got some beef tacos..I don't usually like beef so I don't know why I even got them. I think I was just excited so I ordered more than I should have. Lastly the star of the show!!! Their chorizo tacos!!! Just as I remembered!!! I don't know if they make their chorizo in house or if they buy it from somewhere..but who really cares?!! The way they cook their chorizo is so good!!! Super crunchy and super flavorful!!! I've been to Mexico several times and I love "stepping off of the reservation" (leaving the resort) but it's typically for touristy things or nightlife. This last time around my companion wanted to find a place that made authentic tacos and was highly rated. However she conducted her search, she concluded that this was the place to try and we weren't disappointed! It took me a while to think of what to emphasize in my review but I think the thing that made the greatest impression on my was the demeanor of the staff. They were so soft spoken and nice. Add to that the fact that the food was so good and you have a winning combination. Speaking of which we sampled several tacos, the guacamole and the melted cheese with chorizo. All of it made hot and by hand, with no delays from kitchen (right behind the front counter) to table. We washed it all down with some of their "Natural Fruit Water." We had the passion fruit flavored water which came in HUGE glasses. It was so good that we took two more for the literal road trip to the airport. Bottom line: This place is actually worth the stop. I can't believe it took me five (5) trips to Mexico to finally find it! Pro tip: Pull up a seat and grab a bite for dinner and then head down to Calle 12 Nte., walking east/southeast, to check out the epicenter of Playa Del Carmen's nightlife. This place is worth the walk away from the 5th Street area and tourist taco shops- we had an amazing meal! The gringas, tacos con queso were all the best (and more authentic style) we had on our trip in Playa, but the star of the show is the molcajete- it was amazing! Amazing food, and really friendly owners. The place is just a short walk from 5th, and well worth it. The tacos are incredible, and different from anything else you will find in PDC. I definitely recommend the Chuleton Special, although you really can't go wrong with any of them. You will definitely want to try at least 4-5 because they are all so good. The guacamole is incredible, made to order, and served in the molcajete, which is a really neat touch. The juices are absolutely massive and refreshing. I went with the guanabana, and it was the size of a small child. The decor is really cool, with a beautiful mural on the wall inside. There is also both indoor and outdoor seating, so you can enjoy your surroundings in any weather. The owners are also both incredibly friendly, and will be happy to chat and share their stories. This is definitely a place you don't want to miss if you want some amazing and very affordable food. read more
