I asked my cab driver for the best birria tacos in town, and he came here straight away. And he was absolutely right. This small shop only has around 8 tables, but amazing birria tacos. The service was super friendly and nice in helping us navigate through a language barrier. The menu is entirely based around birria and the make it perfectly, so it works out great. I had a few tacos suave(soft) and a few durado(hard) one of the soups. It hit the spot and I will be back when I'm back in town.

Food Quality: 5/5 Staff: 5/5 Cleanliness: 4/5 Value: 5/5 Totally blown away by the quality of these Birria tacos! Our taxi driver suggested this place and it did not disappoint. The staff did not speak English, which was fine. We were still able to make it work with our limited vocabulary :) . The staff was very nice and attentive. We ordered both suaves (soft) and dorado (hard/fried) tacos and a bowl of sopa/consumé. The broth was so delicious with a very flavorful beef broth. This is definitely more of a hole in the wall and cleanliness was ok. Nothing to be concerned about. Definitely would recommend to anyone looking for amazing Birria Tacos!! Can't wait to go back.

One word: AMAZING. Two words: Authentic and flavorful! We did a food tour during our trip to Playa (Eating With Carmen food tour is a MUST when in Mexico) that showed us some great local spots so we ventured out beyond 5th Ave to find some good food. The servers were kind and patient with us as we navigated the menu that was all in Spanish (another sign of authenticity). The birria tacos (called Tacos Dorados here) were so fresh! The shell was crispy and flavorful. You can order the dipping soup (consume) with or without meat! It was sooo delicious! I love how small and local this shop is! Can't wait to come back here on our next trip to Playa!

Wow. Amazing. Order the birria and you will be shocked at how good it is. This type of stew is not traditional in the Yucatán so we didn't find it anywhere else in PDC. We also had the dorados which are fried tacos. Delicious but def not healthy. The regular tacos are delicious and the birria is a must. Our dinner for two was $10 usd. Service was not friendly which was odd, besides that no complaints!

Tacos Dorados ... delicious I highly recommend.

Take! My! Money! Super Cheap Cash only No Ice No alcohol Open Lunch & Dinner I have very little else to say when I am eating the food. I think I was transported to another level of bliss. How will I EVER eat any other tacos in the world and feel this satiated and heavenly? The best advice I can give you is that you try this place as one of the first stops in Playa - so that you can enjoy this place as much as possible before you leave. We came up because I had said "let's do this place before we leave it to the end and then regret it deeply"... and now we're kicking ourselves we didn't come earlier. Clearly a favorite for the tourists and locals and it very clear why. This temple known as La Birria is a swift 11 min walk from the beach to the main road directly up calle 38. Small in size and easy to miss the drifting smoke from the grill and aroma is sure to stop you in your tracks. With about 10 tables from the front to the back the limited menu offers a finite set of choices - but the flavor profile is so expansive with the salsas and additions up for consumption on the table. What were the salsas and additions you ask? Freshly cut limes (sooo complimentary to any taco) Pickled red onion (sweet vinegar profile and offer a sweet crunch) Chilli infused oil (spicy fire) Crushed habanero salsa (spicy/hot) Avocado salsa - light green (no spice/heat) Bean salsa - light peach/brown (no spice/heat) Salsa picante - light brown with black flecks (spicy/hot) Our host who speaks not a word of English did her best to help but we used yelp to direct the order. She was polite, patient and accommodating whilst we ordered our drinks and then asked for "uno momento por favor" (a moment please) Once we figured we were ready she was quick to come by. We ordered two tacos dorade, two tacos suaves and the consume con carne (with meat) (not sure if it comes with extra meat or not). Even on a piping hot and humid day please order the consume. You can thank me later. Within minutes our food arrived. A colorful array of food that requires no filter, editing or embellishment. The aroma was as delectable as the visual. I grabbed the open face corn taco with slightly crisped edges (taco suaves) and spooned the avocado and bean salsa on top with picked onions and squeezed the fresh lime... What! Is! This! What is this flavor burst? Melting in my mouth, I cherished each bite as the meat melted into my mouth while my friend bit into the taco dorade and I watched her body language confirm what I had assumed was happening - she was in heaven too. I opened my taco dorade like I was gently peeling it open like an oyster to add salsas and additions - the crispy crunch confirming that this masterpiece was going to add an extra level of texture to the profile. With the addition of melted cheese I added salsas and additions. Hold. The. Door! As I bit down into the taco, holding it sideways to capture all the sauces and flavors pouring out from the taco vessel - my tastebuds fired off like firecrackers on New Year's Eve. Savoring each bite slowly and tasting the flavor profile shifting and growing in my mouth. How could a taco be so tasty in such a compact form? Well, it can. Taking a spoon from the bucket in the middle of the table, I dove into the consume to feel it's texture and inspect the ingredients inside before placing it to my lips. Served with 8 lightly fried and crisped corn tortillas - I knew I wanted to just taste the soup on its own in all its own glory. I love piping hot food so I knew the steam on the top was indicating it was ready for me. Filled with onion, cilantro, pork, chickpeas and surrounded by an aromatic broth I took a spoonful to my lips. Stop! The! Madness! There are no words for this buttery consume clearly made with heart and soul. No tortillas needed. Nothing is quite as epic as a this broth, bourgeoning with rich flavors. My tongue was dancing on air, my belly full and my heart content with the joy of a traditional and classic Mexican cuisine that blew my mind. After 2 more 5 tacos dorade (because we needed another hit), the only right thing to do was to finish off with their in-house flan. Bordering on the taste of coffee from the toffee, this delicate flan was perfectly confectioned (not sure if that's a word but it is now). Not too much sugar, but sweet enough to enjoy the creamy textures that dissolved in your mouth with each bite. It finished off the event with a tight close like a sweet encore after a great concert. To top that off, the prices were well beyond cheap for the area. We spent MXN$385 and that included 4 sodas, 6 tacos, consume and a flan. We left a hefty tip because we were so thrilled (obviously not necessary but a 10% tip is always welcomed) ... so... Take. My. Money! I am going back every day that I can before I leave and I will be retuning as soon as I get back to playa. Thank you La Birria - I absolutely love you.

Amazing authentic birria. The prices were great and friendly service. It was a little off our path, but worth the time to get there.

La Birria made it to my Yelp feed when searching birria tacos for our trip to Playa del Carmen. We saw there was a small line of locals to get in the little restaurant so we knew they had to be good and this place was! What we got: Tacos Dorados Consome de Birria Maracuyá jugo fresco Even though it was a hot day, the consome de birria was absolutely delicious! The tacos dorados was good and the salsas on the table really helped make them even better. The passion fruit juice was refreshing and wasn't too sweet!

The service is quick, the prices are incredibly reasonable, and the food is consistently delicious. Before your meal even arrives, you're served a plate of fresh radishes, cucumber, and lime wedges, plus a selection of toppings including tomatoes, onions, and both a green and red salsa. Unfortunately this location didn't give us the cactus like the other locations did. The red salsa was my favourite, it paired perfectly with the tacos and had just the right amount of heat and flavour. The standout for me was the al pastor taco. The meat was incredibly flavourful with crispy edges, a smoky char, and the perfect balance of savoury spice and sweet pineapple. It was easily one of the best al pastor tacos I had in Playa del Carmen. I also tried the sirloin taco and the chicken breast plate, both of which were excellent. The portions were generous, everything tasted fresh, and the quality was impressive, especially for the price. El Fogón absolutely lived up to the hype. If you're looking for authentic, delicious tacos and grilled meats that won't break the bank, this is a must visit. The space is warm and completely unpretentious--wood, simple tables, an open kitchen and a palapa-style roof. Nothing about it screams "fine dining," and that's part of the charm. The perfectly prepared food does all the work. We chose the tasting experience, and bite for bite it was outstanding. The fried mushrooms were perfect, the fish ceviche was awesome, and the beef tongue was cooked beautifully. And don't be afraid of the grasshoppers--seriously. Yummy. Even ingredients I normally don't gravitate toward, like black beans, were used so thoughtfully that I enjoyed them. The drink pairings were equally impressive--tequila, beer, wine and espresso--and each one genuinely complemented the course it accompanied. We were basically the only guests that evening, and our waiter turned that into a wonderfully personal experience. He patiently answered every one of our many "American questions" about the ingredients, preparation and pairings, never making us feel rushed or out of place. A sincere thank-you to him, the cooks--who my partner and I gave a standing ovation to--and the entire team for making the evening so memorable. My one tiny suggestion? Cloth napkins. With that many courses, sauces and textures, the paper ones felt a little out of step with the quality of the food. But when the napkin is your biggest criticism, they're doing something right. And then there's the value. For an experience of this quality, the price was remarkable. Our total was about $320 including tip for the full tasting experience and pairings for two. We have spent more than twice that on comparable special-occasion dinners at home, so Axiote felt not just exceptional, but genuinely budget-friendly for what you receive. Axiote is relaxed, confident, welcoming and absolutely worth leaving the resort for. Go hungry, ask questions, trust the kitchen--and yes, eat the grasshoppers.
