If you want fake, unauthentic Mexican Food come here! Been living in Lake Forest for six years and I always told myself not to try this place bc I know a good Mexican restaurant when I see one. I caved the other day bc I was desperate for chilaquiles! Let's get into the food, beans are from a can, their rice is instant from a box. The chilaquiles were just tortilla chips topped with canned sauce. Customer service, owner was very dry when I initially walked in, and I noticed he was like that with other customers too. They messed up my order and I did not receive an apology from him. I guess he just isn't friendly and the food was def not worth it! Never again! read more

Owner was very friendly and would come again if in the area and if I was craving a burrito just to munch on. If you can travel I would recommend other spots but it's still ok for the area. I grew up in Los Angeles, then lived in New York for 12 years and the Mexican food was horrible there. My family moved back to California in 1983 and we were desperate for good Mexican food. The closest place to our new home in Laguna Hills was a little place called El Conejo. The food was to die for. I ate there regularly for a number of years until they closed. I was heartbroken. Then one day while driving through Lake Forest, I spotted a sign that said El Conejito. Could it be the same? I went in and instantly recognized the menu. I ordered the special, a shredded beef and bean burrito, wet with rice and beans. It was exactly as I remembered. Then I moved to San Diego. After recently moving back to Orange County, I was in the area today and stopped in. Still the same great authentic food. Still the same seriously hot salsa. Same flavorful beans. Same burrito special. The portions seemed a little smaller than I remembered, but I walked out stuffed and happy. This is old school mexican food. Nothing fancy, but oh so delicious. I'm looking forward to being a regular customer again. read more

If you're looking to get the best bang for your buck this is not the place i ordered a chili relleno ala cart it was still $8. I ordered it to go so I didn't notice the size of it until I got home. The coating on the outside was so thin. I feel like they probably cut the egg batter with a lot of milk or something. And the chili was so small and under stuffed with cheese. Really disappointing, never going back there again. You want massive portions for the price? Go across the street down to Angelo's burgers. They have quesadillas the size of a pizza. I really tried to back and support mom and pop but the old dude that works there sees me all the time and he is always rude. They also have some health code issues. I was at the salsa station getting a dirty look from the older gentleman that presumably owns the place and I caught a wiff of something terrible. Also not the first time I've picked up on questionable smells from my food there like they wash everything with an old dirty rag or something. Food seems to be reheated too. El Conejito is delicious!!! First of all- the salsa is to kill for. With three choices, everyone in our family can enjoy the heat they prefer. I love the basic bean tostado. It is bigger than most tostados and is fresh with the crispy corn tortilla. I also always have a ground beef taco. It is yummy! One in our party had a ground beef and bean burrito and loved it though I must warn that it has green bell peppers. One in our party had the carne asada street tacos and she loved them. Also in our order was a Mexican pizza!!! Delicious and huge. We also had the taquitos with cheese and guacamole and sour cream. Back in the 70's and 80's we used to walk to the original El Conejo located in Orange. It was our fav fast food and the price was right. Even one of our sons worked there for a period of time. We were devastated when it closed though Marco's Taco Co was good too. We have been the happiest campers since discovering El Conejito exists! We eat there a few times a week. I consider this place a hidden gem, often referred to as a "hole in the wall." I discovered it by chance when I went next door to buy water and was enticed by the delicious aroma coming from inside. I decided to try their tortas and was pleasantly surprised. The tortas were generously filled with a substantial portion of carne asada, and the flavor was outstanding. Unlike many other places that skimp on the meat and overfill with lettuce and beans, El Conejito ensures you get a good amount of meat. While I don't usually write restaurant reviews, El Conejito deserves special recognition. I am happy to continue supporting this small business in our community. Excellent food! read more

Everything tastes like they are microwaved , store bought, or Frozen. Some foods they'll skimp out on so much meat. Got supreme nachos it was mainly lettuce and sour cream bit of Meat and Kraft Cheese not even melted. Supreme tostadas are okay a lot of lettuce not enough Meat. I also one time had a " steak Quesadilla" it had no steak and the smallest amount of cheese and of course store bought tortillas. The only thing I enjoyed going the times I went was the Torta and burrito. I've passed by here hundreds of times over the last 10 years. Today I decided to try it. The price for a basic ground beef taco combo was decent. The beans were great. The tacos were commercial hard shells and I didn't like the beef seasoning. Portions were about right. The owner was gruff (similar to the Burger Town lady lol), but that didn't make or break things. I'm hoping their other items are better, but I don't think I'll come back here for awhile. read more

If you want microwaved food then this is the place to go. Both my Chile relleno and enchilada were placed in a microwave. This only after I get home and see I've been given tacos instead of my order. Return to the establishment and not even a sorry for the screw up. The guy taking orders absolutely lacks any personality. Doesn't say hello doesn't ask what your order is . Amazing place. Small little place that I always missed driving by. Me and my bf we're looking for something new to eat and just drove into this plaza randomly. Had a chorizo burrito. It was small but it was very cheap. My bf got chilaquiles and he enjoyed them as well. The beans were soooo good lol. Felt like home. I really like this place and I really love that it's close to my house and prices are reasonable. The beef taquitos are really good and their guacamole is homemade and fresh. The salsas are good I like the green one and I really like the red one. They have a mild red and a spicy red. I also like their cheese enchiladas and Albondigas soup... I make homemade of them to get soup and I do like a little more cabbage in it ...They have a great chili Verde special on Wednesdays homemade chili Verde yummy!! My one comment would be that they need to lessen the salt. They put in the food and let people salt their own food to their liking the beans and the shredded chicken are super super salty. Front counter guy was not much help with ordering and the food all was on Pre made processed hard shell taco not real Mexican tortillas . The food had cheddar cheese not authentic mexican . Beans from a can . Meat was just ok and I felt disgusting after eating it . So sad I wished this place was good because I work nearby and wanted to be able to eat regularly here . I ate at El Conejito Restaurant on 24331 Muirlands Blvd. Unit 1 in Lake Forest. The cashier was super nice and friendly. Juan the manager allowed me to take the photos. I ordered the #C Combination Dinner: El Tamal and a Cheese Enchilada with beans & rice. The tamal; chicken chucks with red sauce and it was very flavorful. Enchilada; cheese inside all covered with red sauce and yellow cheese, it had a very good taste. I ordered a diet soda to balance my meal. For dessert; A Apple empanada; cooked apple with a sweet sauce inside, covered with cinnamon and powdered sugar. It was nice & crispy and delicious! I left to take the outside photos.
