A very tasty excursion to the hinterlands of Jackson County, Alabama where we were all suddenly hungry and just whimsically popped in to this surprising Mexican gem on highway 72. The owners are actively involved in the business and it shows. The service is excellent and the decor is distinctly Mexicana. And we all decided that the food was actually closer to authentic Mexican than the cheese sauce laden affront to beautiful Mexican fare that we call Ameri-Mex. We like to eat local and support local businesses and this place fits the bill. We normally drive by on our way to or from Huntsville and the parking lot is usually full. That's usually, but not always, a good sign so we thought we'd judge for ourselves and this place exceeded our expectations. read more

2 (closer to 2.5) stars, with the caveat that this is really not the type of Mexican food I typically enjoy. Came here for lunch with a bunch of my co-workers before attending a continuing education opportunity. There were, I wanna say, eight of us in total. I dunno if anyone tried to get a reservation beforehand, but even if they hadn't, they weren't super busy at 11 on a Thursday, so I don't think getting a table would've been a problem either way. This is sort of what I view as the "standard" Mexican restaurant, at least in the Huntsville area. Mostly some variation of burrito, taco, enchilada, etc. is served with rice and beans and communal chips and salsa. A few other items, like fajitas, taco salad, or flautas are also available. They do have a fairly large, reasonably priced lunch menu, or at least I thought so. Drinks and additional dips add up quickly though, so I learned. Service was friendly and polite, but kind of slow and inattentive, especially considering they weren't busy. It took a long time for anyone to ask what we wanted to order, and a long time for anyone to ask if we wanted our checks. Drink refills and condiments were also slow. Checks did come out quickly once we requested them, so that was nice enough. I opted to get the chicken and rice from the lunch menu. I really did want to go something a little more adventurous, but I also wanted to save $$ and it was the most appealing item on the lunch menu to me. I had a Pepsi to drink and ordered a small cup of cheese dip just for myself, as I was recovering from the sniffles and didn't want to share my germs with anyone else on accident. The food was pretty much exactly as you'd expect, although I was honestly pretty surprised at how bland it was. I mean, granted, chicken and rice isn't necessarily ever an explosion of flavor, but the chicken just wasn't seasoned much and the rice was mushy and not at all flavorful. The cheese dip did have the tiniest hint of heat, so at least that was enjoyable. A big point of frustration for me was the price / unclear receipt. It was not AT ALL clear whether an automatic gratuity was added to the receipt for our large party. I guess I should've just assumed it was, since that's somewhat common practice. Don't get me wrong -- I always tip, and I WANT to tip. I genuinely do not mind if there is an automatic gratuity. But it feels confusing and a little manipulative when it's UNCLEAR whether there's an automatic gratuity. I wound up tossing on a few extra bucks just to be sure our waiter got a tip (despite fairly blah service), but thinking back on the price (a little over $24 for what I thought was going to be a fairly cheap lunch), in retrospect it seems almost impossible that there wasn't an automatic gratuity. And if I'd known 100% that I was gonna be charged that, I probably wouldn't have added on more tip. I dunno, I guess it's also partially on me for not asking, but it still left me feeling miffed. Personally, I highly doubt I'll return here, but I understand options are a little limited in the area, and they do have some fun sounding specials like bingo or trivia night on certain days. Just watch out for automatic gratuities. read more

We have Acopulco fajitas. They were delicious. Family-owned. Friendly staff. No bar to sit at, but plenty of tables & booths. The margaritas are strong so if you don't like tequila, you may want to order virgin. I personally liked them. We got there peach mango & I asked toi get a mix of lime & strawberry. Had a terrible experience at this restaurant. I used to enjoy this place. The food not only tasted horrible but after an hour and fifteen minutes of waiting I received 5 small pieces of chicken with a huge pile on nearly uncooked vegetables for my fajitas. Upon expressing my concerns over my food I was told "no problem" with a smirk. At this point I was ready to walk out. I was forced to pay for food I ended up not even eating. Manager would not talk to me. I was told he was "busy man". Do not eat here. Any Mexican in Huntsville is better. read more

Mexican food, you know the normal, not really authentic but they do have some authentic recipe on the menu (they have pretty good tortillas and they have the white cheese dip) Located right off of Hwy 72, a little hole in the wall Mexican place. This place is nothing to write home about but the food is excellent. Lunch combos are extremely cheap, they have margaritas and they have fresh chips and salsa with kickass cheese dip. I have visited here a few times and always get around the same thing, a lunch combo with bean burrito and cheese enchilada and rice, or a chicken and cheese quesadilla. Both are wonderful, both are always satisfying, and both always hit the spot. The chips and salsa are fresh, the chips are hot the salsa has a little chunk to it but fresh herbs. The cheese dip is warm and gooey and amazing. The seating is older, the decor isn't much, but the service is attentive and perfect. Definitely a local place and packed with a lot of law enforcement and locals through lunch and dinner. We will definitely continue to be repeat customers. read more

This long time restaurant has been in the same location in Gurley for decades now. Overall I'll now give it a solid 4 stars; it seems to me that a few years ago they slacked off some, but they're back with a robust traditional Texmex menu. I'm still disappointed in their very mild, homogeneous salsa, but the locals consider it their own, I guess. The service is brisk and friendly and ownership is long-time local. I picked up my son from college for the summer and before heading home he suggested we go out for Mexican. He suggested El Coyote and away we went. The restaurant was clean and fairly busy for lunch but that did not slow our service one bit. We were seated, got our drinks and was served our food all in 15-20 min. The salsa came out in a small carafe with the chips . I ordered the chicken a rice and it was not a small amount. It lasted me two days. I'll be heading back soon. read more

What a gem! My girlfriend and her family live in Gurley and we met her family and friends for dinner. I had heard all about how great this place was. I was a little unsure upon my perusal of the menu when I saw 75% of the menu slathered in cheese sauce. I almost got Chile Colorado but opted for the El Coyote burrito without verde sauce and only red and cheese sauce. It was STUFFED and their red sauce is FIRE. It was very satisfying. read more

Just moved to the area a few months back and this was the first Mexican restaurant I had visited. Being from So Cal I take my Mexican dishes very seriously, and I can't tell you how thrilled I was by the service, quality, and authenticity at El Coyote! The food was delicious and felt like I was eating a dish made right back home! I've been here multiple times since and El Coyote is now my favorite Mexican restaurant out here in Alabama! Pollo Coyote is my "go to", but the fajitas & tamales are always excellent. Friendly waitstaff get your food to the table quickly and make sure you don't feel ignored. For a special treat try the Banana Coyote or Fried Ice cream to end your meal. read more

This was our first visit to this place. It was a Friday afternoon and the place was packed, so we figured it would take a while to get seated. While waiting, wife and I spoke to a couple that had high praise for this place - them saying the food was better than so of the places we frequent. After being seating, our waiter good got our drink order right away. Took our order - everything was good. Not too impressed with the selection on the menu - mostly common Mexican food items. I ordered the Burrito Santa Fe - when I got it - my wife asked me where the burrito was - it was the size of an enchilada - not much filling. My wife order the mixed fajitas - it came out a little over cooked. Service was good - food not so. I may go back again in the future just to make sure it wasn't just a bad night. It is the only order at the table restaurant in Gurley - I guess that is the reason why it stays so busy. read more

In a hurry? Want some quick, fairly decent priced food that taste pretty alright? El Coyote is perfect for you! Personally, I really enjoy the food and the staff is wonderful. I heard some complaints about the salsa, which I guess isn't the absolute best, but you can choose instead to pay for cheese dip which is super good. I recommend most anything on there, it's all good but if we're being honest, it's more or less all the same, but still good! I absolutely recommend the chimichangas. Happy eating! read more

I was horrified with the service. First was almost charged 70.00 dollars for a 25.00 dollar meal and was hung up on when we asked how much each thing was. We drive there and order, then get home to find literally everything was something we didn't order. So we take it back and ask for what we ordered and were told they got it right and we didn't order what we said we ordered. I could clearly read the ticket they had and our order was written down correctly but she had given them a false order. Realizing that this was the woman on the phone early we asked for a refund. We were asked to leave the property and to never come back. I told them I refuse to leave with our money and she preceeds to rip open her till and throw our money at us all the while yelling and screaming we are the ones that messed things up and I pretty sure we were being called something ugly in another language. It was a horrifying ordeal and I will never ever go back. This woman is crazy and should not be in costumer service. I am 100% positive that she is over charging people and pocketing the diffirence. I personally would go somewhere else but if you do go make them check your order 3 times on the ticket and before you take it home. And make double sure you know how much and have proof of the price of your food. Finally I just have to say watch your wallets yall. If you let her she will rip you off. She says she is the Owner and Manager. If I were you I would go to Joes Pizza instead. read more
