We visited early on a Friday evening so we didn't have to wait for a table. When we finished, there were people waiting. There are complimentary chips and salsa, as in most Mexican places. One nice touch here is that everyone gets their own bowl for salsa, so those who want to add some hot sauce can do so without displeasing others who prefer it milder. I enjoyed one of the combo plates: chili relleno and enchilada, which came with beans and rice. My wife had the burrito and enchilada with beans and rice. My daughter tried the chili relleno for the first time and found a new favorite. The service was fine, although we did get the check from another table by mistake, which was quickly rectified. I ordered the cheese steak quesadilla with cane with guac salad and rice ( best rice I've EVER had) and my boyfriend ordered burrito Mexicano which came with the guac salad- no rice. Based on Yelp reviews, such places near the mall (except say for nearby Griffin) appear to be few and far between. Easy parking in side lot. Greeted by friendly staff and seated quickly. Building is "quirky" and bathroom is odd. Food? Ranks up there with some of the best Mexican I've had in San Antonio. Went here for first time, as we have been looking for a good tasting Mexican restaurant. We ordered 2 dinners, shrimp fajitas and steak fajitas. The chips and salsa was placed on the table. Salsa was a little more saucey and less chunky, but had excellent flavor and you could tell homemade. The dinners came out sizling on a cast iron pan. They had a generous portion of steak and shrimp along with vegetables that where cooked perfect. Flavorful and still a little crunch. I would recommend to our friends. This is a really popular local mom and pop Mexican joint that is near the Air Force base. First, this place is really authentic but removed all the "real peppers" from their sauces and used standard green peppers and pablanos. So if you go here expecting a nice Latino kick and that savory spicy flavor, you lost it with those changes. The recipes and serving sizes are in line with traditional Latino shops, but that one changes kills it. The wife ordered the pork chile verde. The pork in it was amazing. The chili verde without real peppers in it tasted like green tomatillo paste with no flavor. I kind of felt bad after sampling it... I ordered the Mucho Grande Burrito. After usually not being able to finish Mucho Grande Burritos at multiple other Mexican joints, I was expecting a giant feast... What I thought was going to be a giant "Bang" was a silent little "whimper". The burrito was about the size of a regular burrito at other joints I have been to in the past... For costing about 50% more than any other dish they offer, I thought I would at least have a matching visual "wow"... I got nothing... As for the taste, it was meh, I've had better... I realized that the clientele were all non-Latinos and I realized that this was "Americanized traditional Latino cuisine". This is not bad, but if you are missing that nice kick you have had south of the border, you are not getting it here. You want a margarita and a non-spicy savory Latino meal, this is your joint... Despite the amazing food, I feel that the service could leave some room for improvement. The staff is polite and pleasant, but the service was really, really slow. When we most recently came, there were maybe 4 other tables in the entire restaurant. It took several minutes for someone to come and take our drink order, and the food took a long time. The food is really good, and I don't know if it was just an off night with the pace of the service. After ordering, we waited over a half hour for our meals, and then the waiter brought out one order only. Had to wait another 5 mins for the rest. The "extra" sour cream was barely 2 tbsp worth. He never came back to check on us, and I had to track him down for extra napkins. I was a little nervous since there were several signs on the doors emphasizing they're looking for help in all positions ASAP but they seemed fully staffed to me. I forget what my husband ordered but I had the #10 on the lunch menu -- 2 tacos with beans and rice. A server quickly brought us the drinks we asked for and brought us chips and salsa. The salsa was just mildly spicy and very good. It was delivered in a little carafe which was a nice touch. They do; however, have a sign on the door explaining this. So to complain about it after having been notified of their issue makes no sense. I've had fried ice cream on the brain lately, and I found not one but two restaurants near my gym that serve it. Hey, I work out precisely so I can do things like eat the occasional fried ice cream. Don't judge. Photos of the fried ice cream don't convey the scale. It's served in this huge fried tortilla and smothered in whipped cream, chocolate syrup and sprinkles. I only ate about half (and didn't eat the tortilla at all.) Plan to share. They provided free chips and salsa at the bar. The chips were heated. I wish the salsa had a little more of a kick to it, but otherwise no complaints. I had a small blue Margarita, too, which was plenty. I didn't try any other food, but what I saw others receive looked pretty good. I grew up in Arizona, and even though I'm not a connoisseur of Mexican food, it looked and smelled good. We came here while on vacation in Niagara Falls wanting Mexican food. I had looked on Yelp for local fare and the reviews sold us on this place. We arrived around 7 to a full restaurant (good sign). We were sat after about 5 minutes because they were understaffed. Once sat we ordered the shredded pork nachos (new item). They took quite some time to arrive (20 minutes!). We put our dinner order in while waiting for the nachos to arrive as well. When we finally received the nachos, they were excellent!! For our mains we ordered the Mucho Grande Burrito with steak and the Super Chimichanga Negro with ground beef. Super!!! The flavors were spot on!! I can't tell you the last time we had authentic Mexican this delicious. We liked it so much that we came back the following evening and my husband ordered the El Cubilete fajitas and I ordered the Super Chimichanga again but this time with shredded chicken. I like the ground beef much better. We did not order appetizers because the portions are so big! I'm leaving 4 stars because of the time it took to get appetizers the first night. Two of us went to EL Cubilete for an early lunch on Saturday Sept 14th, 2018 The atmosphere was clean and festive. A nice place. -- The chips and salsa were fresh and tasty. There was also a good selection of hot sauces at the table. -- The Food: The ground beef was drowned in water. The hard-shell taco was soggy, and the soft-shell tacos had to be wrung-out before we could eat them. I had ordered Cheese Enchiladas. My enchiladas were OK, but were a bit flabby - [where were the crispy edges?]. There was way too much cheese in them. It was like eating a plate of cheese with a little sauce on it. Appetizers came after the meal - and the Quesadillas came as big lumps, not cut or sectioned at all. -- The Waiter delivered our food, then disappeared. He never stopped back to check on us. When we told him about the water-logged tacos [one clearly uneaten], he fumbled with some response - but did not offer to have them remade or any discount offered from the bill. No compensation offered to what was clearly a problem with the food. -- Between the drowned tacos and lack of service, this venue gave a pretty poor first impression. read more
