I visited Nelson Ghost Town again today, and it was a completely different experience from my last visit. Previously, the store was closed and there wasn't much to see, but this time everything was open and much more enjoyable. A special thank you to Tracy, who was incredibly kind, welcoming, and helpful. She made the visit even more memorable and didn't charge me anything to explore the property and take photos, which I truly appreciated. The historic buildings, vintage vehicles, and unique scenery make this a fantastic place for photography and exploring Nevada's history. Unfortunately you have to deal with the unfriendly Nelson Ghost Town to be able to take an El Dorado Canyon Mine Tour. The Mine was a source of silver and gold and had been an active mine around the time Hoover Dam was being built. Too much of the tour was anecdotal about the current owners. (The mine is privately owned). And seemed to have the historical content geared to an elementary school audience. We had been in Vegas. This was a nice little side trip since our flight was delayed. read more

It's a bit of a drive away from the stip but well worth it. Our tour guide is hilarious. I forgot his name but he's the son in law of the owner. It was very cool and cool (temperature wise) walking around the mines. Lots of nice photo ops in the little area outside too. While I was there, I saw a couple dressed up in wedding attire. I think they were having a photo shoot. Mine tours are at 9am, 12pm and 2pm, WHEN THEY HAVE 4 OR MORE ADULTS AND A RESERVATION. We called at 8am when they opened, they didn't have anyone reserved for 9 or 12, so we made a reservation for 2. Reservations can be made by calling 702-291-0026. It is $20.00 for adults (13 and older) and $12.50 for kids 5-12 (kids under 5 free). When we arrived at 2pm there was a good sized group, about 19 people! read more

Bruce was our tour guide and it was very informative and also highly entertaining.. it feels like we got a comedy show with the tour!;) The mine was an easy walk for most people with plenty of stops along the short distance. The tour is approximately an hour and a half, broken into three areas. If you have trouble with balance, the part of the tour where we enter the mine may not be for you. It is a must for Geology buffs... I even found one of the geological cadastral survey markers right in the front of the mines visitor building near the picnic tables. Well worth the $20! I learned about this 45-minute las vegas excursion (caught it on the way back home to SoCal - a little detour but not too bad) from, interestingly, chatGPT! I made reservations for the kids and me to check it out, made a little pit stop for lunch in Boulder City then arrived around an hour early to adventure around before our 2PM tour. Make sure to fill up your gas tank and use Google Maps to navigate - we used Apple and got most of the way then stopped before our "destination" to take a peek at El Dorado's cool artifacts, later realizing we arrived just where we wanted to be. We checked in at their main office (2 outdoor bathrooms available just to the right) and caught the tour with Bruce, who is super knowledgeable and impressively able to connect with all of the various parties that were on our tour - everyone from my 3 little kiddos to the folks visiting from the East Coast, Ukraine, and Canada, by weaving in little tidbits and jokes for all of us. The tour itself was done really well - we learned about the history of the area and its people, all about gold and silver, and of course went into the mines, which are clean but cool so definitely bring a jacket. read more

Beautiful gem 45 minutes away from the strip and a great place to take pictures! If you want to take pics and go into the barn it's $10 and you can stay as long as you want. You don't have to do the mine tours, but if you do decide to do it you'd have to call in advance to make a reservation. Make sure to bring water or snacks as it gets super hot during the summer. There is a little store there where the owners (I'm assuming) are at. They have drinks (water, soda) and some snacks available for purchase. You got a rental car in Vegas? Well what u waitin for, giddyup and go see this ghost town/mine tour! I found this place as we were looking for new places to visit - the usual array of high-priced tour packages went by and I spotted El Dorado Canyon. After some googling I found this modest web site (they dont really advertise) saying they offered 'mine tours' for $15, call ahead, etc. I called, like, 5 days early, they didnt really want to hear from me till the day before lol. So calling the 'day before' they said, 'gotta spot @12pm, follow Google maps please'. They want parties of 4 at least to start a tour. These are great people offering a pretty cool insight into their lives and how things used to be. Be courteous. Its a beautiful desert drive to get here. Winding into the canyon you'll go past Nelson, and then spy the old mining town. Lots of knick-knacks, old cars, western stuff and of course, mining tools scattered around the properties. Park, go in and pay the $15. There were 6 of us in our tour group. Bruce comes out and amiably asks where everyone's from, and thats where he might assign you a nickname if he likes you. lol. Anyway, Bruce was a great story teller, and gave us the lowdown on how gold was mined, the tools they used, what life was like back then. They have lots of old photos and even a mine drawing. Finally, he led us down the rocky trail, past interesting displays, like the old jail cell, which he locked me in, and tools. Then he led us into the mineshaft. This was AMAZING. They've done a great job, wiring the shaft with old-style lanterns lighting the way. Its a few degrees cooler in here, with a breeze blowing in from some unseen sky-hole. Bruce showed us how they followed quartz veins, and gave showed us how they used the manual tools to hammer out the material. Omigod times were hard back then! After we exited, Bruce volunteered to take pics of anyone in front of the mine entrance using our phones (which everyone accepted). And thats it. Bruce walked off and let us explore the grounds on our own; I wouldve offered a tip but apparently thats not 'the way of it' here. EASILY the best outing of our most recent Vegas trip, highly recommend. Bonus - explore the rest of El Dorado canyon on your own, beautiful views of the river here. And the amazing solar panel arrays in the valley will blow your mind as you head back. ps, I really appreciated the low-cost t-shirts which they offered in the 'XLT' (tall) size. read more

What: 1 hour 10 min. tour of a defunct gold mine. The tour was in 3 parts: the first 2 parts by Bruce outside and inside the store area with historical background and the 3rd part by Joe Beck of the mine itself located across the street. Joe was awesome, he's actually the son of the owners and you can tell he takes pride in the fun place they have. He's got a great personality and jokes around and makes it really enjoyable. The most interesting part for me was when he lit our area by candlelight and turned off the lamps so you could experience what little light the miners worked by! Crazy dark! Man, really makes me appreciate being born in this day and age. Price: $15 adults, $10 kids 12 and under. Credit cards are accepted. Pay inside. Also, there is a gift shop inside with cool rocks and jewelry for sale. Bathrooms: YAS! Two inside for you to use before the tour! Location: Use Google maps to go 2 miles past Nelson at the mile marker 13. Tip: Call and make a reservation. Tours are at 9am, 12noon and 2pm. Earlier tours are probably less busy. Our tour had 30 people which sucked because I would prefer a more intimate experience. They divided us in half to tour the mine, but even 15 people was too big of a group in the narrow mine tunnels. Here in the wild wild West, just an hour away from the Glitz of Las Vegas, is the real glitter. Nelson, a really cute little gold mining ghost town is Americana at it's best; it does not get any better than this. Lots of fun and an authentic gold mine town experience. There was a rather spectacular Jolla cactus patch in the back of this town within steps of the buildings. Many Western antique artifacts are found all over the place. The tour of the gold mine was a major part of this experience so don't miss it. You should call ahead if you are running a little late for their last tour of the day. There were snacks and drinks sold here but no sit down dining. Make sure you are tanked up on food or you will be fasting for a few hours till you get to Searchlight. read more

I LOVE ghost towns! There is something intriguing about towns that once were, and now they are no more! El Dorado Canyon Mine is just what the doctor ordered. My recent visit here was with the knowledge of knowing that this is somewhat staged. This little mining town did actually exist, but some of the las/props that are around it are actually staged. I'm completely fine with that as it's the essence of the place that had me here! Just looking at the old buildings, completely surrounded by extremely rough terrain, it surely makes you wonder how people survived during these times. It's captivating to me to see how the "Old West" came to life, survived for short stints, and then moved on. It's even more impressive that folks like these strive to keep this dwindling history alive! read more

This was an awesome experience. As my family and I decide our theme for our summer adventures this year. As your driving down the highway waiting eagerly to get here it is pretty neat how time has just frozen. If your a vintage car junkie like we are, you'll def get a kick out of all the old timer cars, trucks, and busses. There is so many antique pieces all around the property, it is easy to spend lots of time exploring. You pull in either on the left or right and find parking. Then your supposed to go inside the main building on the north side of the road to check in your given the run down regarding the cactus and of course the rattlesnakes. There have been 2 spotted already within the past 2 weeks. You can take the mine tours for a fee or walk about the property and explore. There are signs that let you know do not cross here and there. This is an actual residence, so they ask that you be mindful and not stop in after dark. Would def recommend City of Nelson hwy 165 - go past about 5 minutes and you'll see it. read more

This family run business was more than expected. Sure, I was thinking these would be dope photo ops and walk thru a gold mine. But, this was a whole day of adventures!!!! This isn't the hour long tour I was expecting lol Before driving in, we called about making a reso for the noon tour, which is what's recommended. And we were put on a waiting list. Arriving after a pretty easy drive from Henderson, we just walked around the grounds. Taking photos of/with the old architecture and cars that lie along the picturesque mountains -- people lived like this....!!!?!!!! #NEAT Walked around/inside the general store and overheard my friends name. Turns out the tour was calling my friends' phone to confirm our noon tour. We spoke with the lady and was set! We had an hour to kill before the tour, so she recommended we drive 5 miles down to check out the Colorado River. We did that, and killed like 20 minutes lol Arriving back, we just hung out in the general store and really looked through some photos they had on hand of animals they found in the area. And they even showed us the rattlesnakes they've collected (in the fridge). ***NO*** Apparently, its "almost snake season" --- again, NO! They had amethyst and pink quartz gemstones which were fairly cheap compared to other places in Vegas. So I got couple of them to start a collection. One of the daughter's ended up being out tour guide and was pretty funny telling us about he history of their land, the gold mine, and their very own family. So crazy to think they grew up "like that" whatever I mean by it lol It was, literally, a history of gold mines and the area in or around Vegas. You almost forget how "young" Vegas is as a town. We walked across the street to the gold mine and walked in lantern filled caves. Our tour guide even turn off the lanterns so we were in pitch black 50 degree caves. Like, WHOA! This is what people used to do back in the day. That. Shit. Cray!!!!!!! In fact, people STILL do that shit. Even. More. Cray!!!!!!! Fun fact: Nevada is the 4th largest producer of gold in the world. I didn't go on the tour but I went to the town. There was definitely a town here at one time. This is definitely a staged ghost town with some old times relics. There's definitely no rhyme or reason to the town setting. You'll definitely get some awesome photos if you can look past the traces of modernity. I mean people definitely live here so you'll see some things that are out of place (Venetian blinds and window a/c units...) I'm definitely not going to criticize someone's home especially when they are gracious enough to upkeep it. It's definitely a charming little find and worth the hour drive. What a great day trip! The tour was fantastic, and my favorite part of my time at Nelson Ghost Town. Thinking about the men and women, the work they did to not only survive, but thrive in the true Wild West, is so moving. The narrative that Tour Guide Bruce gives is totally smooth. He delivers history in a dry, but incredibly compelling way. You can not help but to be fascinated. Being in the mine is a sensory experience too. Take one step inside an unassuming doorway and the world is totally transformed. The blazing hot 110 degree heat suddenly drops 50 degrees and you are wrapped in this delicate cool breeze - fresh and beautiful from the center of the earth. You are inside of a mountain made from quartz crystal, encapsulated entirely in the calming energy of cool stone. Listening to the history, you run your fingers along the walls and feel mesmerized by the beauty, emotional realizing the true fortitude of the men and women who tamed that land, and amazed that every groove you see or feel was chipped out, by hand, by candle light, by a human with a spike and hammer. This place is a treasure and to have it right in my back yard - 45 minutes away from home, makes it that much more impressive. read more

One of the many things to do outside of Vegas. Nevada used to be the largest mining producer in the state. We wandered around and took a tour of the site and the mine for about 1.5 hours. People always come here to do photo shoots. Many celebrities have come here for photo shoots, and a few movies have been filmed in this area. Why? .... Because it's like a ghost town. Something you would definitely see in an old western movie. There are lots of cool things to see including old gas stations, old hot rods, old buildings, antiques, and much more. The mining tour cost $12.50 for 1.5 hours. The tour first takes place in the "gift shop" where you sign up. The room is filled with old photos that your tour guide will go over. Apparently, this place is rich in history. You'll then venture into the mine. It once had an abundance of gold and silver, but all you'll find now are large veins of quartz that run throughout the mine. I believe there may still be some gold and silver, but I may be mistaken. Overall, it's really interesting to explore this old ghost town. If you have family or friends that rather do something fun other than gambling and partying, this is one of those places to go. read more

**FYI - if you are interested in a mine tour (read below for more info) - please note that the last tour of the day is at 2pm (I went on a Saturday and that was the case). There was one at noon and I am not sure if they had any prior to that. First of all, this mining ghost town is called Techatticup. Nelson is right up the road. Only 7 people live in Techatticup. The property is pretty amazing - so many photo opportunities! Old cars, houses, signs, etc. Your Instagram will blow up, for real. The owners have collected an amazing collection of smaller items as well - spend some time walking around the shop and looking at everything. The owners are very friendly and will answer your questions. MINE TOUR: The actual tour cost 12.50 and it was amazing. Bruce, the tour guide, was so informative, engaging, funny (he had some cheesy jokes but his delivery was good!) and friendly. One of the best tour guides I've encountered. There were 2 kids in our group and he made sure to engage them and allow them to take photos with some of the mining tools. You go into the mine and it's pretty awesome. He covered everything about mining operations back then and had a lot of cool facts about Nevada and idioms derived from the mining industry. At some point, he even turned off the lights and left just a candle to try and help you understand what it was like to work in that mine. Pretty intense. **Bring water with you as before you actually get down into the mine (which is much cooler), you'll spend some time outside, in the sun. **If you have time, drive about 5 miles past Techatticup to the Colorado River. Do tale care where you go and heed the signs restricting access to certain areas both for your safety and respect for the private property areas. The must not miss is the mine tour! The mine tour is a unique must-do which is be perfect for both small kids (even four year olds) and adults alike. It's a hour from Las Vegas but definitely worth the drive. It's around an hour and half of your that is able to be easy but active, educational but not overwhelming, full but not intense. Bruce was great and patient.
