It was 116° the day we were here and we were so HOT bring water! There is water for purchase and water fountains if needed. The AC in the visitor center felt amazing! The security guard was so informative and friendly. We enjoyed visiting with him. 2 security checkpoints the first entering Hoover dam and the 2nd is entering the visitor center. 1// way across the dam you enter AZ or NV and the time changes!

After tour of Dam, our group just walked around. Went into visitor center. Kitchen closed. Was hungry, and they had advertised outside the menu options. Nope, closed. Very expensive gift shop. Same items on Amazon 50% less. I'll pass on overpriced gifts. I guess I was disappointed because I had expected so much more at the 8th Wonder of the World.

The Hoover Dam tour and visitor center exhibit is excellent. Tour company Grayline and guide Michael gave an excellent and informative tour. The recently updated exhibit at the dam is excellent. The tour at the dam of the power operations shows how this is an engineering marvel.

Hoover Dam is a 'Must See' when you are looking for site seeing things to do in Vegas OFF the Strip. We moved here in 2019 but still hadn't gone. I went with our youngest son & we took a neighbor (both 24, both Engineers) and had a FANTASTIC time. It was a last minute trip so we didn't leave time for any Tours but we'll go back again for that another time. I ALWAYS want to know how things work, so do our kids. We homeschooled our kids and it was really enjoyable to have our son 'School' me, so to speak. We'll dig a little deeper next time about the history of the dam (my job) and how it works (our son's job). There is nothing more satisfying than watching your grown kids use THEIR knowledge to help you get a better understanding of something/anything! We went on 12/26/24. We arrived about 1:00 and they were JUST closing down the visitor parking lot for people who just wanted to walk across the bridge to have a look.

The Best Dam Thing Visitor center for the amazing--and world famous--Hoover Dam. The Good: *Security check-point to get in TSA-style: empty your pockets so your possessions get X-rayed and walk thru a giant metal detector. Don't pass? Get ready for a colon cleansing. :) *10min video on the history of the dam *After the video you can continue on an additional 10min photo tour or be allowed to enter the visitor center. *Beautiful viewing platform on the top *Small museum with additional info on the Dam and the people who built it. *All the staff are friendly and very helpful. The Meh: *$10 entry fee for all (3 & under are free) The Ugly: *Gifts and souvenirs are in a separate building from the visitor center. Which I suppose is good if you want to skip the $10 entry fee and just buy your tchotchkes and be in your way. Tldr: Don't be a cheap bastard and cough-up the cheddar to visit. It's a must!

The upside of visiting in the winter is you get a sunset on the way home!

An amazing piece of American History, Ingenuity, and Perserverance! Open to explore the top of the Dam, but you will get lots of Dam info if you take a tour. They have two options available; we took the 1-hour Dam Tour because, hey, we drove all the way out here, didn't we!?! Our tour guide was wonderful, engaging and informative. We met a few other guides in the lobby before the short film and they were nice too. Remember to pack some water, it is HOT and DRY, and there is limited water on site. We did get to refill our bottles before the tour for free, and you should too! I was a bit surprised that my NPS Access Pass didn't get a discount. It turns out the Dam is self-sufficient, and they fund their operations by selling power and tour tickets... they do NOT get federal funding for operations. All in all, a great stop out West, and an inspiration to us all!

I really enjoyed the tour beneath the visitor's center, exploring the caves and pump house used to transfer water from the Colorado River. Be prepared to do a lot of walking to and from the parking area and along Lake Mead. The weather was perfect and not too cold for this time of year. I would recommend this to anyone who drinks water!

You can easily drive into the parking lot like you are heading to the visitor center, but drive past it down to the restroom parking lot close to the trail and it's perfectly marked for easy no brainer adventure. About half way or an hour in there is another restroom with a covered picnic table for a break. Then you can continue on down to the Boulder Dam. There are amazing views there as well as awesome retro restrooms , memorials, and water. There used to be a cafe. I forgot to look if they are still open. Before the dam is a parking structure. You can take the stairs or an elevator. We usually start our hikes about 8 am. The restrooms were still clean and stocked. I bring hand sanitizer. Be sure to bring water and a snack just in case. Dogs are welcome but please pick up after them and keep them on a leash. The later it gets the more busy it gets. I like to go here at least once a year. It's just so nice to get out into nature and experience Nevada. Parking is free. You can check out the visitor center while you are there. They have cool stuff. I recommend this trail. Check it out!

I remember when it was full truly full back in its heyday, when it stood as the largest reservoir in the United States, born from the mighty Hoover Dam and fed by the Colorado River like a beating heart in the desert. It wasn't just water out there... it was life. The kind of place families planned entire summers around. The kind of place that meant something. Our family didn't just "go" to Lake Mead we made a journey out of it. A couple days on the road, anticipation building mile by mile, until finally, there it was. We'd spend a week out there, soaking it all in. And I'll never forget those spring breaks. The sun high, music playing somewhere in the distance, boats cutting across the water, laughter echoing off canyon walls. Girls in bikinis everywhere and I was just a young man coming into my own, thinking every single one of them was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. It felt like the whole world was alive, and somehow, I was right in the middle of it. Back then, the water... it had a color you almost couldn't describe without sounding like you were exaggerating. Turquoise one minute, blue-green the next, shifting with the sunlight like it had moods of its own. The desert wrapped around it, rugged and raw, but the lake softened everything. It brought people together. You couldn't find a place to park half the time, and nobody cared. That was part of it. People shoulder to shoulder, coolers open, music playing, drinks in hand, strangers becoming friends for a weekend. It felt affordable, accessible... like it belonged to all of us. It felt like America. And now... now it feels like something else entirely. These days, when I pass by Lake Mead, it doesn't greet me the same way. The shoreline has pulled back like a memory fading. What was once shimmering and alive now looks cracked, dry, almost forgotten in places brown where it used to glow. The "bathtub ring" carved into the canyon walls isn't just a mark of water levels it's a scar. A reminder of what used to be there. It's hard not to feel like something's been taken. Whether it's overuse, growth, decisions made in rooms far away, or just time itself catching up whatever the cause, it's left behind a shell of what once was. A place that used to be bursting with life now feels like somewhere people go to remember instead of live. You don't go there the same way anymore. You visit it like a piece of history. And that's what hurts the most. Because I think about bringing my kids there today... and it's not the same gift my grandpa gave me. Not even close. What was once a living, breathing escape now feels like something we're quietly burying. Not gone but not what it was. And maybe never will be again. Still, I can close my eyes and see it. The color of that water. The sound of laughter. The feeling of being young, sunburned, a little wild, thinking the world was wide open and I was somebody in it. Lake Mead gave me that. And for that, no matter what it looks like today... I'll always love it.

The gift stores had moderate priced items and a nice selection. The free museum gave a nice history of this Route 66 stop. The gem was definitely the pay museum. We learned so much about the history of the area and the dust bowl. As an added bonus was the electric car display. So much fun! We almost skipped this because we were just planning on a short stop. Glad we stayed and explored! We were traveling with an active 6 year old and she stayed engaged throughout. So many fun photo backdrops made this a stop that made our highlight reel from our vacation. Plan to spend at least an hour. Your paid admission to the museum also includes 3 other stops. Not all are open every day. We only made it to one of the 4. Again, good for all ages. Entertaining and informative.
