Basic seating with nothing fancy. A full jar of fresh pickles is on the table. The pastrami is second to none. Seriously. You get a generous portion of pastrami on rye. Greasy, fatty, just perfect! Luckily I found Hobby's Delicatessen via Find Me Gluten Free and was so glad to find that they do legitimate gluten-free options with a dedicated fryer and prep space to prevent cross contamination. I had the gluten-free pastrami wrap with fries for $23.95 and my husband had the #5 pastrami and corned beef with coleslaw and Russian dressing for $25.95. he also got the drip coffee with free refills for $3.25. Service was amazing. Owner's came out and chatted with us and preemptively made sure that I was aware that my food was safe for me to consume. Our waitress was incredibly personable and sweet. There were free pickles on the table. I'm not even a pickle person but I had three because again, I've been dying for vegetables after being in Europe. Great portions, safe celiac options, personable service, refillable drinks and no charge to use the toilets (although I didn't need to use them during this visit) This is what makes American restaurants great and Hobby's ticks all of those boxes. Order a day ahead through their website for pick up the next day. Closed on Saturdays. Given the trip for me, I make this a multi-stop Newark run along with fish market, Portuguese bakery, and authentic Spanish lunch (several great spots in same area, but I'll leave that for another review).

I have been coming here for many years now, and this place has grown over time. They offer many options when buying a well balanced meal. This includes selecting one of the many meals, building your own customized meals, and trying out some of their weekly specials. Oh, and how can I forget the healthy desserts and snacks! My genuine gratitude goes out to M.P.M. for saving me lots of money as well as providing me a daily solid meal option. This time I asked the woman making my sandwich if she could put a little extra banana pepper because the ordering kiosk didn't offer that option, and she said, "Did you pay for more???", then when handing me my uncustomized sandwich, she asked to see my receipt when clearly it was my sandwich to begin with. Then later on I found out she put potatoes on my sandwich, which was supposed to be an Italian cheesesteak. Who puts potatoes on an Italian cheesesteak??? So let's review: overpriced and limited customization within what they do have, bad service aside from Yenny, and the food is so-so. I can even put up with so-so food if that's what's in the immediate area, I can put up with paying a few extra bucks if that's all that's in the area, but if you can bind those two and add on poor and unfriendly service, then no thank you. MAYBE if I could get Yenny every time, but I likely won't walk back in there to begin with anyway. So congratulations, you were stingy on not giving me a little more of a topping, and now you've lost a customer in the area who might've otherwise convinced others at my school to use you guys, but hey, you've still got those few extra banana peppers to hang on to.
