I tried this place after years of seeing it and not making it happen. I asked out of curiosity, it's been here for over 14 years! It was OK. Not bad in any way, but it was good-enough. I ordered the tacos dorados with chicken, it was barely above dry and it didn't seem the chicken had any flavor. Was it boiled? Tasted like it. It came with two sauces, one habanero salsa and a guacamole which was nice. Meh, everything tasted like it needed salt or flavor. My litmus test is al pastor at any taco shop. Their meat is stewed. The flavor was good but... stewed. I hate leaving bad reviews. There were good experiences such as the staff was super friendly, pricing was decent for amount of food. Handmade tortilla for the taco. If I was in a pinch I'd try something else there and give it another shot. They make a corn tortilla quesadilla which is a treat for gluten free folks like me. read more

I have been contemplating coming to this place every-time I walk larkspur landing but just couldn't get myself to pay $8 a taco. I finally decided to just even try! I went in on a nice day and decided to get a michelada and a fish taco, the person I was with ate a taco de asada and also had a michelada, for that I paid $35. It took around 15-20 minutes to get our beers and tacos. The michelada was very tasty but the beer was room temperate so it was a bit dissatisfying as it was a fairly hot day. The fish taco has absolutely no flavor and it came with an orange salsa but that also lacked flavor. The taco de asada also lacked any seasoning and not much cilantro or onion on it either. The price tag of $8 is extreme especially for what they delivered. I cannot say much about the main courses as we just had the tacos but I personally would only be back if it was again a hot day and was craving a michelada (and if I was in the area otherwise I'd go somewhere else). read more

I ordered the quesa birria, and it was delicious! The tortillas were perfectly crispy, packed with tender, flavorful birria, and the consommé was rich and savory--great for dipping. First I should preface this review and say we were seeking healthy, fresh Mexican food which how this place promotes itself. Unfortunately, our $90 lunch at El Huarache was very disappointing. Lunch was 2 enchilada plates, 2 margaritas and chips and quac. The chicken enchiladas plates had one mole and one with red sauce. They came with luke-warm (!) tasteless grilled chicken on top (not inside) of a tortilla with VERY little (unremarkable) sauce, a bit of cheese and zero flavor. We ordered chips and quac which came with two small sides of two types of salsa which also had zero flavor. I'm not a spice fiend but I would like a bit of flavor!! The margaritas were fine if a bit on the sweet side. Maybe we chose the wrong dishes. ‍ On the plus side, The venue (Marin Country Mart) is lovely place to meet for lunch and sit outdoors in the sun. read more

Visited with my little one. We had the Ensalada Doña Luz with carne asada added and the children's cheese quesadilla. My little one's quesadilla came with rice and beans. After scarfing down his plate, he said if another quesadilla appeared, he'd eat that too. It's worth noting, that once he dug in, conversation ended until his meal was finished. My salad was excellent. The dressing was a tad sweet though. Next time, I might ask for salsa instead. I enjoyed the queso fresco and the crunchy pepitas. Try the tacos! This place is quick and the food is tasty. They bring your food to the table, but its a casual spot. Portions are healthy and parking is super easy because its sits in a strip mall right next to the Larkspur Ferry Terminal. This is one of the few Mexican places around that I've seen that serves Huaraches. My favorite is the Huarache Loco Campechano. Its over a foot long! Its served with cilantro, onions, salsa, sour cream and cheese with choice of two toppings. I recommend sharing it with at least one other person, if not two. read more

We came to Larkspur for a few things that day, and ate here for lunch. Both of us were so happy that we ate here. We had a variety of tacos, most of which were great, and a taco salad. The plain/chicken taco was a bit dry. Otherwise, everything was excellent. They have a house salsa that's super tasty. I loved that everything was plated in traditional Mexican plateware. There were so many tasty options on the menu, and I decided to go with the special of the day - the birria tacos with rice and beans. The birria tacos were juicy and savory, though the sauce it came with (along with the rice and beans) were on the bland side. 12/13/20 This was one of the few restaurants open in this "shopping center" (not sure what else to call it?--not quite an outdoor mall, but sorta like that.) We originally came up to hike, and knew there were tons of nice hipster-type food here, so we figured we'd just find one we liked with outdoor seating... Well, first off it was raining, so that outdoor seating idea was a bit of a silly thought already, haha. But secondly, it turns out this whole Marin area is closed down for any public eating I think. So, most restaurants on this property were completely closed, and El Huarache was one of the few options. As it turns out, their food's actually pretty good, thankfully. I've been having a lot of luck with Mexican food lately. I will add that their staff isn't super nice. Their demeanor just ain't friendly, but they're not rude either, so it was okay. I think the part that bugged me was that they wouldn't give me any extra napkins when I asked and just pointed inside my bag which had a few. (As I knew we would, we totally ran out of napkins 1/2 way through our meal, the original ones soaked in Mexican goodness and baby slime.) Also, they wouldn't give me any water. Said they only sell bottled water. Sigh. Okay, so the food... 1. Watermelon Agua Fresca 16oz $5: One of the better agua frescas I've had! Usually these things have a watered-down taste. I always assumed that was the traditional taste as out of dozens I've had, they're all like watered down juice. Figured since it's called "agua" fresca, that agua must mean something right? But this one was nearly pure fresh watermelon juice! Very nice. 10/10 2. Fish Taco $6 "lightly fried battered fish w/ cabbage & avocado mayo dressing, organic corn tortilla": Fish itself was great--battered and lightly fried, flaky and moist insides. I think $6 is pushing it in terms of cost, but it was technically a good fish taco. 8/10 3. Chorizo Taco $4.75 "onions, cilantro & salsa, organic corn tortilla": Thye used good chorizo! Not that crumbled up, dripping orange crap. This was chunky, sausagy, flavorful meat! The tortillas they use are also better than typical store bought stuff. 9/10 4. Gordita $7.50 + $3 Meat "round-shaped organic corn tortilla filled w/ ground pork, source cream, salsa, onions, cilantro, cheese": Well, hmmmmm... so THIS is a gordita??? You mean all this time Taco Bell LIED????? So what was served was a round pizza-ish thing of a corn meal crust, about 1cm thick. It was tasty too--rustic enough, but enjoyable. I'm not sure what kind of meat I got, and it's not clear from the picture, but whatever it was, it was seasoned well and tasted fine. I think $10.50 is quite a lot for what this is though, so... if you want to try what an authentic (I assume) gordita is, given the lies perpetuated by Taco Bell, go ahead. 5/10 5. Huarache con Costilla (with Steak?) $13 "tender rib meat or grilled chicken breast": Well, it is their namesake. I had no clue what I would be getting except I had to get it, right? Turns out it's quite similar to the gordita--a heavy, dense bread of a lot of corn meal, but instead of shaped like a circle, it's more of a racetrack oval. I got steak (doesn't say it's an option on the menu, but the cashier mentioned it) and it was pretty good! Like real carne asada steak meat. Not the juiciest I've ever had, but quite meaty and juicy enough. Nice Mexican seasoning. I wasn't sure how to eat this... ......and oh yeah... they were nice enough to give us 3 tiny, crappy plastic forks, but no knives.... yeah, so wasn't sure how to eat this, but I basically folded it into a sandwich and ate it like that. The most disgusting chicken tacos I have ever encounter. ( see photos ) First of all they do not follow Proper COVID prevention. All tables were dirty. There was a guy that looked like an employee eating. He directed me inside for someone to clean the tables. A guy came with a dirty rag and started cleaning the tables spreading the dirt all over the table. Then came the two chicken tacos so gross. When I complained to the woman and the guy both Hispanics, they started arguing with me like I was crazy. They refunded one of the tacos reluctantly not the other one because I nibble on the corn tortilla and kept their tip. I would stay as far as possible from that place and the health department should pay it a visit. read more

This is one of the best and most interesting Mexican restaurants in the Bay Area, surprisingly located in the very posh and upscale Marin Country Mart. Authentic huaraches that are amazing with the Costilla (rib meat) a lovely sopa azteca, and bomb tacos for $5. Super reasonably priced, lovely outdoor seating and never too busy. Check it out :) I don't mind hyping it because there is plenty of seating and they deserve to be well known like Sol Food down the road in San Rafael (yes I know that's Puerto Rican but similar in the depth and authenticity of the menu, and also nice colorful ambiance. read more

We were nearby and I was in the mood for Mexican food so we thought we'd give it a try. I ordered the chicken enchiladas mole and chips and salsa bar (they have plastic baskets of chips stacked up which are not fresh, and a ramekin of salsa crudo so small you can only get a corner of a chip in - all for $4.50!) while she ordered the Huarache chicken. If it's in their name she thought they should be good. She never found out. When our food came out, I got mine, but she got a plate of chicken mole. That she did not order. She neither likes or ever orders mole. When we told the server that, she said that was what we ordered. Only I heard her order Huarache chicken. The one who didn't was the guy at the register who takes the orders. Then in order to prove her point, the server brought out the ticket which only proves he typed in the wrong order. She told us she couldn't and wouldn't replace her meal. We sat there awkwardly waving flies away (both doors were wide open on a gloomy, cool day) while I picked at my enchiladas. The mole had a stale, musty taste, and the plate of food looked as gray as the sky. We got up and left $50+ of food on the table. That is the first time I have ever done that. I let them know I was not happy and would be writing a negative review. They simply did not care. Good news is that just a few miles away in San Rafael, Sabor a Mexico had a table for two just waiting for us. Unlike El Huarache Loco, this place is inviting and warm, service is friendly and respectful, and the food is appetizing, colorful, hot and delicious. And complimentary warm chips and salsa are brought out as soon as you sit down. Miles apart in more ways than one. We will never, ever go back to El Huarache Loco and will warn everybody we like to stay away from it. read more
