Came here for a family dinner, and was surprised to find a love band "duo" playing great casual music! An unexpected treat. We had a reservation for Father's Day and waited about 10 minutes for a table to open, as it was the busiest I have seen. The table was nice, big enough for the five of us, and the ambiance is always great here as well. We were quickly greeted by our server, Eli, who provided chips and salsas to whet our appetites, and we soon narrowed our focus to the food and drink menus. We ultimately decided on some El Jefe Tacos, a shrimp and crab enchilada, a three-item combo with two chile rellenos and a cheese enchilada with green sauce, a carne asada taco, and the volcanic Molcajete (served in a warm stone bowl with grilled steak, chicken, and prawns. Covered with a red chile, roasted tomato sauce). For libations, we went with a mojito and a new drink - for us at least - the pineapple mezcal mule! The food came in a timely manner, and the molcajete was still bubbling! Hence, the volcano nickname! The mojito was very minty and refreshing, and the pineapple mezcal mule was an acquired taste for some of the group - I enjoyed the smoky earthiness of the mezcal, but it's not your run-of-the-mill tequila, so if you are new to mezcal, be aware of the difference. The food last time was a bit spicy, but this time it was not an issue. Still spicy, but not to the point of being overpowering. Even the salsas were not as extreme. Good for some of us! All the food was delicious, and the three-item combo was great to look at as well. As we say, "the eyes eat first," and indeed my eyes were little piggies that meal! Overall, the service was great, the food great, and the entertainment a perfect background for what would have been just a noisy bunch of chatter. Overall a great Father's Day lunch. read more

Am liking this place more than before. Went with daughter-in-law, wife and one grandchild for lunch and it was OK. Mexican Jarrito sodas are $5 each, a glass of Modelo beer is $7 and a small orange juice is $6. Prices, to us, are high. Yes, it is in California, but Mexican dishes are not that expensive to make. Eli was our server and he did a good job with us. The Conchinita Pibil Tacos plate ($21) is a Yucatán Peninsula dish of deeply flavorful pulled pork, marinated in citrus and achiote (those tiny red seeds common in the Americas) paste. Served with pickled onions on corn tortillas. They were OK. Huevos Rancheros ($19) were, as expected, fried eggs over corn tortillas and slathered with green and red sauces. Pretty good. Most expensive was the five Street Taco Plate ($48), an outrageous price for five street tacos. Of course, you could choose what protein you wanted in those five tacos, but... We will be back as son's family like it very much. We...not so much. read more

Today, I had lunch with my best friend at Sabor a Mexico. We both were absolutely delighted with our meals! Really delicious and flavorful! The ingredients used were truly fresh! I had their "Battered Fish Tacos," served with the best black beans and rice I have ever had! My best friend had their "Chicken Soup (chicken meatballs)," and a "Grilled Fish Taco." We haven't been here since the pandemic - in fact we'd never actually been seated inside, but realized how much we missed coming to this place. Today we made it back after a few years and WOW. It just keeps getting better and better. The owners are a lovely couple who have taken a bunch of family recipes and made them truly drool-worthy. Today, we both had special enchiladas - my wife had the enmoladas with two different mole sauces, and I went for the enfrijolada with grilled chicken. I nearly licked the plate clean - the smoky, chipotle-flavored sauce over the tortillas and beans was incredible! The mole went just as fast. The rice and refried beans were fresh, tasty, and a perfect compliment - and the salsas - especially the garlic/jalepeno/olive oil salsa - were totally unique and really great. Ive had their combo plate not a huge fan. Rice was overly salty, beans were great, and the mole enchiladas were overly salty the chicken was on the dry side and overly seasoned. However their tacos de lengua are the best Ive had so far in San Rafael. I would also highly recommend the horchata snd Hibiscus both of which are one of my favorites. The toppings were fresh tasting. - 5 tacos - 2 carnitas, 2 pollo, 1 carne asada. The pollo outshined, but the carnitas and carne asada were good. Again, the toppings were fresh tasting. Service was friendly and prompt, and food was ready quickly. Ambience: - Decor was fun and colorful - Great place for gathering with friends and family as tables can easily be rearranged - Bathrooms were clean Metered street parking, free on Sundays. I can't believe I avoided this place! It's fantastic - nice serving staff, great happy hour, amazing food. Loved the chips and kind of loved the salsa (so often those can be meh) too. Brought a family of friends back so I was here twice in a week. Love the tortilla soup, Quesabirria tacos, taco trio plate, fajitas. The green enchiladas were good, not as we were hoping. Skinny margaritas were good especially with the blood orange slice. A bit pricey outside of happy hour as many places are. Most definitely coming back again! read more

Found this place after yelping where to go for lunch after walking the Marin French Antique & Farmers Market - everything looked and sounded good so off we went. We arrived around 1pm on a Sunday and it was slightly busy inside but only waited about 10 min before getting seated. We were hangry and there were many different options on the menu including breakfast items (weekend only). We decided to try the following: - Queso Fundido Appetizer ($15.75) - wayyy to much oil for me and not enough chorizo = no flavor = no bueno! - Fajitas Steak & Chicken ($24) - sizzling hot and good portion size - Lamb Barbacoa Special 1lb ($55) - this also came in a half pound option but not enough flavor! - Mar y Tierra ($25) - again not enough flavor - Two Item Combo - Chicken Enchiladas w/red sauce ($18) - the sauce had a little spice to it and was pretty thick - Iced Tea and Sierra Mist ($3.75 ea) They brought out complimentary chips & salsa but it was such a small bowl, we devoured it quickly and asked for some more. Salsa was very good with just the right kick to it! It seemed like forever before the appetizer came out and it was fairly small. Then it took forever again before our lunch came out but finally we got to eat. We all agreed that the food was just ok (average) but sadly the service was definitely lacking! We did read in previous posts that service was sometimes slow but we didn't get checked on at all and we were there for 2 hours! Had to flag down each time for extra napkins, drink refills, more tortillas, to go boxes and finally the check. This is a go-to ladies lunch spot for my circle. The street parking is relatively easy, it's in a central location, and they have indoor and outdoor dining. The servers are always friendly, and the menu gives everyone something they want. Group favorites are the chicken caesar salad and the fresh chips with guacamole. The carne asada was tender and flavorful, not a chewy piece in the entire burrito. Such a well balanced and well packed burrito. Chips and salsa were delicious, salsa had a nice mild heat/flavorful balance to it. Chips were nice and perfectly crisp. I also ordered the margarita Azul and it was so delicious. We took our family here for our daughter's birthday on Thursday early evening. As before, we had to wait for a host or hostess to be seated. There were 6 of us and we had reservations, but the table wasn't properly configured. The food was pretty good. Guacamole was great, tamales, enchiladas, and tacos were good, the chicken mole was excellent, the green salsa is to-die-for, but the beans were not up to par no matter how people ordered them. Service was also okay. I ordered a taco ala Carte and it was included on my son's plate. They didn't offer a second plate and only later brought a fresh taco for me when it was clear that we couldn't manage passing a soft taco down across several people. The restaurant wasn't crowded, which was nice as we could hear one another talk and it made for a comfortable dinner. read more
