As soon as I walked and I was immediately met with an extreme amount of unwelcome. I was not greeted when I answered I did approach one of the workers and I asked if she could explain the menu to me to which I received no response I then asked her if there were any items on the menu that did not include cheese she stated no I told her the food smelt great and I really wanted to try anything on their menu cuz she recommend any item to me she then they didn't no. this was a very unfortunate experience because not only is it a neighborhood restaurant but I take pride in reviewing local and small businesses in my area. I will say the food smelled absolutely amazing and I am just sad that I did not have the opportunity to try their food. on a side note I never announce myself when coming into a restaurant I typically just like to order food and give a honest review. hopefully someone from the business might look at this review reach out to me and give me another opportunity to give them a try. though I would not return to this establishment unless I we're invited. It's a hole in the wall and gets super busy so I would call ahead of time for sure as they're all made fresh to order. My favs were the beef stew and pollo!! A Little pricey on certain items. Menu on dry erase has no $$ price. Owner very very nice but serious language barrier. I'd go for the squash papusa. First time trying one and wasn't impressed with the chicken. Squash was very good but 4 pupusas, 1 Mineral water and a beer was over $40. But I left tip too. I know things are expensive but another customer head to translate my order to the owner. A little frustrating. My friend that I took liked it very much and took her daughter the next day. read more

We were able to place an order quickly but did wait a while for our food. There was only two ladies working together. Our pupusas tasted fresh and were huge in size. Just wish it was more crispy. Had been craving some popusas and I remembered hearing bout this place so i wanted to give it a chance. I brought the wife out here and both hoped for the best. When we got here, parking was easy to find and there was no line to order but there was people waiting to get their order. I ordered the three popusas, the wife ordered two asada tacos, (i stay away from asada, those are boring to me) but hey whatever floats ur boat. I ordered the bean and cheese popusa, the cheese and zucchini and the cheese and herb (I forgot the name of the herb) I asked them what it was and they said its an herb that compliments the cheese very well. The popusas were pretty good, the pickled cabbage slaw they serve was ok, i've had better, the asada tacos to me were boring but they weren't mine. My popusas were really good, hot, cheesy and crispy. The reason i gave 4 stars was because it was hotter than Satans nut sac in this spot, good lord!!! Quaint inside. Menu was difficult to locate (it's behind the cashier on a chalk board). Tried the chicken soup and the bean and cheese pupusa. Both items were decent could've been more flavorful. The cabbage mix for the pupusa was slightly pickled (I prefer it more picked). The sauce they give for the pupusa was also lacking in flavor. The soup was good as is- when adding the onion, cilantro,rice and squeeze of lime it amplified the soup quite a bit. read more

They're pretty good and I would definitely eat here on the regular if it were anywhere near where I live. It's not, so that makes this a tasty treat when traveling out yonder. If you're wondering why it took so long for them to prepare your food, check out the bains of food in the back- there are none. So they prepare each item fresh- a novel concept. The mild salsa was described as pretty flavorless- a tomato sauce-esque condiment. The hot salsa, however, was excellent. They come in smaller plastic containers for a reason and do not hestitate to ask for two. Ordered a couple tacos (blasphemy with Chando's across the street? Nah.) and those were okay. Nothing too outstanding yet still delicious. Tough to argue not crossing the street for the Chando's kind instead. Pupusas win here! Delicious and cheesy, order a few and don't forget the hot sauce! No outside seating, so leave the pups at home. I can't remark on the service so mine wasn't that bad. read more

After reading my friend Jennifer S's review I kind of have mixed feelings about El Izote now. Jennifer went here based on what I said last night in the pupusa talk string. So I will strictly rate the food and the service. It was 5 stars to me. The young Woman that took my order and chatted with me was very friendly, professional, and a true expert at making pupusas. I don't know what the people sitting in the back of the restaurant were talking about as they were out of my ear range. They may have been making fun of me. I'm just a pupusa loving Gringo. The pupusas are excellent I thought. Corina also rated them very highly and she is Salvadorian. They are a little larger diameter than most and very thick. I bought 4 last night. We had a loroco / cheese and a bean / cheese last night and they were very good! Tomorrow for lunch we will have another loroco / cheese and a chicken / cheese. We have never tasted a chicken/cheese pupusa and we are looking forward to trying it out after the reviews here mentioning it. Our normal go to is pork / cheese. The Woman making them apologized that they would take some extra time. They use a dry grille without any oil and I have learned today that can double or triple the cooking time. We hate greasy pupusas! One year at Carnaval San Francisco Corina and I hit the first pupusa booth in the vendors row. She was starved after Samba dancing the parade route. This booth was cooking the pupusas on a very oily grille. They were in a hurry for them to brown and they weren't very good. They were swapped with customers. I want this restaurant to secede and do well. But, what Jennifer S overheard is not OK. Corina is Latina, but doesn't look it that much. If we had been there and heard comments like what Jennifer heard she would have gone ballistic. We love your food, but all of you that work there need to have a talk. After a disappointing meal at Chando's across the street, we headed over to El Izote after seeing they had Salvadorean food. The place was empty on a Saturday afternoon and we were greeted by the nicest young lady at the register where we placed our order. We got 3 pupusa special with bean and cheese, chicharon and cheese and chicharon, bean and cheese pupusas. We also got a side of beans, rice and Salvadorean horchata. While Mexican horchata tends to be more milky in appearance, the Salvadorean version seems more like a agua fresca and has a more pronounced cinnamon flavor. I've had several versions in LA before and I like El Izote's version the best. The pupusas were a really good size and filled with melty cheesy goodness. We watched them make it fresh after we ordered. Since we couldn't make up our mind whether we wanted Mexican or Salvadorean rice, the nice young lady gave us a very generous portion of both which were excellent! I couldn't make up my mind which I liked better. My carb craving was well satisfied with the rice and the beans with melted cheese on top. We couldn't finish all 3 after filling up on the beans and rice so we had leftovers.The BF and I were VERY happy campers! Even though the food was aces, what really stood out for us was the service. The young lady graciously answered all our questions and was accommodating. When we couldn't make up our minds about the rice or salsa, she gave us both. She checked on us often without being intrusive. The food came out in a timely manner considering the pupusas were made to order. The place itself is literally a hole in the wall at the corner of a small strip mall. But don't let that fool you. This place is a hidden gem that's just waiting to be discovered. read more

This 5 star review is for the papusas only, as I can't seem to order anything else when I come here. I have tried the following types of papusas and recommend all of them: 1. Chicken and cheese- In my opinion, this is the most flavorful on it's own , but be careful of a tiny bone or two that may be hidden inside. 2. Bean and cheese --I tend to go with one of these to go with a meat-filled papusa. 3. Pork , cheese -- Another winner here. These papusas are served with a mild salsa that is not too spicy for my wife and kids to enjoy. However, I like spicy food , and opt for the hot salsa which is very tasty without being too overpowering. If you have never enjoyed a papusa before, I could only describe them as a thick corn tortilla -stuffed with the meat/beans/cheese/flower (loroco) of your choice. Priced at about $ 3.00 per papusa, they are deceptively filling, but go ahead and order 2-3. You will soon be hooked! The inside of the restaurant is on the grimy side if I am being honest. The ceiling tiles are stained, the building looks old, and the bathrooms have seen better days. However, this family owned place is exactly why I love hole-in-the-wall restaurants. Never had Salvadoran food before but based on reviews, this is the place to go for pupusas! We each ordered a plate of 3 pupusas for $8.95. I went with the spinach and cheese, chicken and cheese, and pork and beans and cheese. It took a little while to come out even though we were the only customers but at least that meant they were freshly made. She brought out our plates with some coleslaw and bottle of hot sauce. It was more flavorful than hot but still tasted great. After a while the cheese became overwhelming so I ended up taking the rest home. The thick tortillas paired with heavy cheese would probably influence me to just order one pupusa next time and pair it with a tamale or two. read more
