    the interior of a restaurant

I have driven by here many times but stopped in for the first time on a Sunday afternoon. After being seated I noted the music was usually loud but OK, I am old now so I get that its probably me. They brought out the chips and salsa and the chips were cold. I ordered a chimichanga and upon arrival it was fair. Not so bad that I sent it back but the chicken inside was dry and tough. My wife ordered a chicken dish and it was so bad she sent it back and didn't even want anything else. Maybe this was just a bad day but both of our dishes were not that good.

    Arandas special was flavorful

My Aranadas Special was full of flavor and a decent portion. My wife had the Hawaiian Burrito and enjoyed it. We had chips, salsa, and guacamole for starters, and all of them were good. The four other diners in our group also liked their meals and service was good. We sat on their spacious patio and the décor was welcoming.

    So disappointing...

Well.. I am reviewing again ... I hate to do this but if you are going to review restaurants you have to be honest. I take this very seriously because I am a home chef and I love cooking and food very much. We do not order in often because we can cook better but sometimes everyone needs a break. We wanted Mexican and this WAS our favorite but the feeling has changed. My husband got carne asada and the meat was grey and so over cooked it was like it had been boiled and not even put on a grill. It was elastic and you could not chew it. I got shrimp and veggies. The shrimp was very under cooked and my veggies were still hard and crunchy.. not steamed and had no flavor. It's sad when the best part of a 65.00 delivery meal was the bean dip and a nacho and cheese kids meal. We have gone on every Sunday for 3 months but we will not be back. We will definitely be doing Los Potros or Don Bento or our home kitchen for now. This was a complete waste of money..

No queso on the beef nachos. The portion was decent but the lack of cheese ruined it. El Magueys is far superior.

I ordered the Carne Asada, which is usually my "go to" when I eat at a mexican restaurant. Wait time wasn't so bad. The chips and salsa were good too, the tortilla chips were crunchy and salsa was flavorful. But unfortunately, my Carne Asada fell flat. I asked the beef to be cooked at medium but the beef was tough and overcooked. I was surprised at how dry it was. There were some pieces of the beef that were decent, but overall just too overcooked and dry for me. It was pretty disappointing actually for my first time here. Service was great, they were attentive and checked up on us from time to time. I just felt like the Carne Asada price at $17.99 did not correlate with the quality of meat at all. The other sides were good, like the avocado, beans and rice. And the overall portion size was great too. But for the dish as a whole, I can't justify the price for that. I've been to other mexican restaurants in the area with better Carne Asada that I'd choose in a heartbeat. Despite that experience, I'd come back here but I'd definitely order something else.

Handicapped parking is near the front door. Walking in there is a divider directly in front. Turn right and there is a sign to wait to be seated. We had ordered ahead for pickup and were greeted as soon as we walked in. We were a little early from the time they said it would be ready but we only waited another couple minutes. The food was packaged in the typical foil tins with lid. Everything was hot when we got home. The carnitas was quite good. The meat was tender and moist with very little fat. Flavor was mild but still acceptable. The chili Colorado was cooked properly. The sauce had no heat which was a disappointment. The rice and beans accompanying each dish were sub par. The rice was flavorless and the beans were very bland. The lettuce and guacamole salad was fine. The guac was also very mild in flavor. Finally, the corn tortillas were disappointing. Very bland again with only two of the three being edible. The third was soggy on half and tough on the other. While this El Maguey provides passable Mexican-style food, there are several other restaurant choices available.

So finally after all these years, I came here with my dad. Service was fast and helpful. There are many tables and places to sit. They have a large menu too. I ordered the Beef Chimichangas with all the sides, and my dad had the Chicken Fajitas. Food came out pretty quick. I will say, the portion size is incredible. The price is reasonable depending on the time you come for lunch or dinner, and they give you so much. For me, I love all the sides and some places tend to give a meager amount, but not this place. And they didn't even cheap out on the guacamole amount too. I had some to take home at the end, so I was happy about that. Although the food was decent and plentiful, I will say that it lacked flavor for me. It wasn't amazing in comparison to all the Mexican places I've tried around the area. And also I guess from eating Mexican food in California, I have a high standard. Like I reiterated before, great portion size but a little disappointing regarding the flavor. It felt like it was missing something, maybe a little salt but also something more that I can't put my finger on. I'm not sure if I would come back.

It doesn't have any real flashy decor, it's very humble in it's atmosphere and setting. But where it really show off it's greatness is in the food and the service. Our server was "Excellent"! Very helpful with our order and because of our dietary needs we were very specific on what we wanted and didn't want. She made it all happen and when it did, OMG the food was so good (the salsa could have used more cilantro, but I'm nit picking at that) and there were very reasonable portions for a very reasonable price. I know of at least 3 other places in the vicinity of this restaurant that are not only higher priced for what you get (very little), but the food is bland and poorly prepared and/or a poor quality of ingredients that make the food undesirable.
