El Kefon is an assuming small restaurant located within a residential neighborhood in Lorain. They offer excellent Puerto Rican fare at reasonable prices. The family that operates it is friendly and greets you with a smile. I walked in around noon on a weekday hoping to get something simple, and wound up ordering arroz con habichuelas (beans and rice). The portion was sizeable and I was not left disappointed. If you want a taste of the island but don't want to catch a flight, drive over to El Kefon!

    AUTHENTIC Puerto Rican Food!

This is my to-go restaurant for amazing authentic Puerto Rican food when I visit my hometown of Lorain, Ohio. You enter and are greeted by a buffet of food to select. I get the rice and beans with potatoes, pork and potato meat ball. They give you so much food and for an amazing price.  I can never eat it in one sitting. The next day leftovers are the best!  I opt for carryout, but they have seating as well. Staff is always friendly and hooks you up with hearty/generous portions. Free parking is available on the street or the parking garage located around the corner and shared with Family Dollar. I always worry that TSA will try to take my leftovers when I go through security, but my leftovers always clear....lol. Writing this review has me craving for this meal.

Had a craving and needed my fix! I'm not sure why I haven't heard of El Kefon yet but, so glad I gave them a try. It was as good as I hoped! We had as much as we could... the chicken and pork, white and yellow rice, beans, empanadas, and ruellenos de papas. Fantastic! I'm confident to say 2nd best Puerto Rican cooking behind only Mrs. Camargo's kitchen in Brookpark!

The almost 3 hour drive is absolutely worth it! Love walking in and having the smell of this food just smack you in the face! Communication may not be the easiest but I'm never disappointed in the massive amount of food, especially for the price $10 and a pile of omgoodness!!!

Excellent food and great owners! The owner took me through the food and did a great job recommending what a first time customer may like.

Of the many choices some of we totally just had to get some tostones or as you might know them as fried plantains they were totally yummy and fried to perfection just the way they should be! Of the many options I was all about the Pastelillos as they just sounded good for the time being for those who don't know what this is it's basically an empanada that's fried and filled with some type of substance. They had several different kinds of Pastelillos of them I went with the chicken, beef, & the pizza ones as I just couldn't make up my mind of them the chicken one was probably my favorite as it had a really good flavor to it and I just enjoyed it the beef one was also good too as it was just horns beef but it was seasoned well and totally yummy with each crunchy bite the pizza one was also good but just ok as it was only cheese and a little bit of sauce either way it was still good and a unique item on the menu. My friend ordered sone pork with rice and beans as he said he has gotten that here before he totally loved it and was just all for it the way it should be. Overall this was a mellow hole in the wall kinda place that had some yummy food I'm sure u might make it back here again at some point as my friend totally loves the food from his home country and as for me I'm always down to try new things so it will be forshures that I'll try something else next time!

It was late ish lunch time maybe a little after 1 PM. The place was empty but that wasn't necessarily negative. It took the couple in there a hot minute to look up from their phones and I asked for 6 beef pastelillos. It took a while as they had none premade. Totally understandable. However the guy who stood there on his phone the entire time did not give off a welcoming feeling. I was very uncomfortable. They looked like the ones the ladies at Sacred Heart make. When I got them home and tried one they were super greasy the oil was not hot enough when they were cooked also it was obvious the oil in their fryer needed to be changed it was rancid. This was so disappointing as the dough was a great texture and the filling was so perfectly seasoned and had nice texture.

For food, we shared two appetizers and honestly could have made a meal out of them. The Dominican Flag was incredible: crispy fried plantains, perfectly melty fried cheese, Dominican salami and smoky longaniza, all topped with pickled red onions that added the perfect zing. Every bite was packed with flavor and felt like true comfort food. We also loved the Loaded Yuca Balls; crispy golden yuca stuffed with cheese and topped with roasted pineapple, jalapeños, sour cream, and bacon. The combination of sweet, spicy, cheesy, and savory was amazing. Everything tasted fresh and homemade, the atmosphere was welcoming, and the service was great. We'll definitely be back to try more from the menu!

Our waitress was attentive, friendly, and did a great job throughout our meal. I ordered the Garlic Chimichurri Shrimp. While the shrimp was cooked well, it had a pretty fishy taste that just wasn't for me, and I wasn't a fan of the cilantro aioli. Several people in our group really liked the pineapple dressing, though, so I'd definitely give that a try if I went back. Next time, I'd order a different entrée because there were several other dishes that looked delicious. The only thing that felt a little off was when we first walked in. The gentleman at the front just stared at us without greeting or acknowledging us, which was a bit intimidating. It wasn't a huge deal, but a simple "Hi, we'll be with you in a moment" would have made for a warmer first impression. Overall, it was a good experience, and I'd definitely return to try something different on the menu. I also had the flan, which was pretty good and the Tropical Bay House which was tasty! ,

Quintaesencia was great to work with in June 2026 at accommodating our large group of 21 women, providing is with ample space, a dedicated server, and even making separate checks for all of us. To the surprise of no one, I love South American food. Okay, I like most ethnic cuisines, if not all, but I really love foods like arepas, chimmichuri steak, asado, empanadas, etc! I looked at the menu ahead of time and settled on some faves of mine, arepas and yucca fries, but others in the group ordered a variety of dishes amd drinks, all of which were delicious! I stuck with water as my beverage because the cocktails/mocktails were a bit too pricey for me. I ordered the trio arepas ($18) and a side order of yucca fries ($5), which were very filling and sprinkled with cheese. I liked my meal a lot although I would like to see a few more types of arepas offered on the menu. Our server, Valeria, was absolutely amazing and served our party of 21 women quickly and efficiently. There was a 3% card usage fee as well as an automatic 20% gratiuiy for parties of 6 or more, so after paying with card, my total bill was $30.54. I left full and happy and hope to come back again to try their other dishes, particularly their pizzas and a creative cocktail or two.
