We've been coming to this restaurant since I was pregnant with my first born and he is now 23. I have always admired the hometown feel of this restaurant. It's always decorated so nicely for all holidays. They always start you with cheese, salsa and chips. My kids always called it "cheese and chips" when they wanted to go. We ordered one chicken and one steak milanesa as well as one chicken and one steak quesadillas, all dinners with rice and beans. We also ordered two horchatas. The portion sizes are large, and I can never finish my meal. The flavor is always good. We always ask for sour cream and extra salsa. read more

A good friend loves this place and wanted to share it with us. While nothing was bad, nothing was great either. Out of what I tried, the sopes with chorizo were the yummiest. It's a small venue with a local crowd. The service was pretty relaxed, so probably not conducive if you are in a hurry. The best thing about this place is the price, very affordable for both food and drink; and very generous with the sour cream unlike many places. This is a solid 'OK' venue and sometimes there is nothing wrong with that. read more

Just went to El Lago and it's 140pm on a Sunday and they close at 2pm. The White Lady that serves there is rude and didn't want to let me sit so I could order and eat before my Sons Game. If a place closes at 2pm should they be told they can only have their order by carry out? Make it Make Sense. The owner "Toochy" told me I can go to McDonalds to order pancakes when I was asking about pricing and specials. She huffed and puffed on the phone with me and proceeded to tell me that the special I asked about isn't posted on google when that was my reason for ordering in the first place. I went in to order and she put her finger in my face and walked away from me. As an owner, that is no way to run an establishment and she should be ashamed of herself for her customer service. El Lago is a decent Mexican restaurant in the Zion area. The food is very affordable and you can get a meal for two for under $20 here which is nice and a rarity nowadays for sit down restaurants. The green salsa cheese enchiladas were good and filling, I'd recommend trying it you like enchiladas. The service is friendly as well. The decor is a bit outdated and there are some better Mexican places in the area but it's definitely worth stopping by and having a meal at. read more

Really solid Mexican restaurant. Stopped in based on being new to the area and the reviews looked good. Greated immediately when entering, chips with salsa and queso brought to the table with menus. Queso was nothing special, but nice for a compliment to the very tasty fresh salsa. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas and steak tacos. The tacos were bigger than expected. You only need two to fill you up. They were well seasoned and the steak was still juicy. The only surprise was that they did not have any fresh hot sauce. When I asked they offered Tabasco or chalua. But all in all still a pretty solid taco. The star of the show was the margarita. These were some 5 star margaritas. Line was dominant, but other citrus flavors including orange made these some of the better margaritas I have had in some time. All in, great little spot that I plan to frequent. The only not so positive is their salsa a chips. The chips are sometimes a bit hard. El Lago in Zion, Illinois is one of my favourite Mexican restaurants; I have been dining here for many years. The service is always friendly, attentive, and courteous; Lupe, especially, is very lovely, and always takes good care of my family and I. NB I have only lunched here; I have not eaten breakfast or dinner here. The décor is a bit dated, but it does not matter; I truly don't care, when I'm in a friendly place. The food is very good; I very much enjoy the chimichangas, the fajitas, and also the ground beef tacos. The chips are served warm, with a yummy salsa (home-made) and hot queso sauce as well. It's so good! Best of all, however, are the margaritas; I don't know what they put into them, but they are TERRIFIC! You can't drink just one! NB Always drink with moderation. NB If you can't find any moderation, give me a call. The margaritas are absolutely heavenly; they are smooth, not too sweet, not too sharp, and served in a generously-sized glass. As far as Mexican food goes, I'll eat pretty much anything they've got. El Lago is local to my parents' home, and I'm here every so often since the service is always pretty good, it's quiet and cozy, and the food comes out quickly. It might not be the cutting edge of staple Mexican cuisine, but it's consistent, hot, a good value, and tasty. You seat yourself and you're handed a menu. Soon after, someone comes by to ask what you want to drink. Some chips and a cup of house salsa and warm queso are served. Today, the chips were slightly stale. I ordered chicken taquitos to start, offered with a good helping of fresh guacamole and a dollop of sour cream. Each bite is an assault; the fried tortilla shell shatters at your teeth, and the searing hot chicken filling mixes with the guacamole or sour cream, ever so slightly cooling the filling enough to prevent you from burning your mouth. The seasoning on the chicken is subtle, a little spicy and a little rich. The texture is a joy. No taquito should ever not be crunchy. I ordered enchiladas Mexicana, and asked if the mole sauce could be made spicier. I received both their hottest house salsa and a kicked up mole. The beans and rice were excellent. After pouring some of the salsa onto the dish, the heat level was perfect. The chicken was tender and the tortillas held up to the mole and salsa. After chips, an appetizer, and an entree all to myself, I was satisfied. The entire time, I was waited upon at the right frequency. I wasn't interrupted while eating, my water never went empty, and I didn't even have to ask for a couple extra napkins. My requests were accommodated without fail. read more

I went there today and my server was the owner. I asked for iced water with Lemon. She gave me a dirty glass with no lemon and 2 pieces of ice. I ordered the Mexican omlette and she brought me an omlette with American cheese no chorizo and tomatoes when I asked for no tomatoes. My toast was cold the butter didn't even melt. When I mentioned it to the server at the register the owner who was my server said take it off my bill and never serve me again. She said my friend was beautiful and gave her her meal for free. I told her I was the one who brought her here. The owner got belligerent and said she went to my table five times but she never took the time to take my order correctly. She rushed me and said she'll come back two times without listening. I Understand she was busy but the lack of respect was disappointing. Nonetheless from the owner. The cashier was apologizing but the owner was very disrespectful. My chiliaquiles were flimsy. Monica's Grill in Waukegan got better chiliaquiles anyway. read more

I had the toco dinner with rice and beans. The beans tasted rancid. I told the owner who said, "No!" We use blank oil!" I was talking about the horrible tasting Beans! Ordered a "cheese and pork" appetizer that was a total disaster. Some over-cooked pastor in the bottom of a baking dish topped with a sodden lump of melted cheese. It looked and tasted disgusting.
