I ordered the carnitas and my daughter got the chicken fajitas to go. My carnitas came with rice and beans in the container and 3 taco sized tortillas. My daughters came with a separate container with the rice and beans. We also got two bags of chips with salsa. The salsa was a bit liquidy for my liking but the flavor was pretty good. The carnitas could have been a little more crispy but the flavor was definitely there. My daughter enjoyed her fajitas. When we have fajitas at home we always have shredded cheese to put on them. I didn't realize that it didn't come with shredded cheese. You can order it separately evidently. Over all it was a good meal. Sorry I didn't think of taking pictures. read more

We stopped in while doing a load of laundry. The dip was great, full of flavor and warm chips for dipping. The Pastor tacos were full of flavor, and some extra fresh jalapeños to top them off. We were looking for restaurants around the Skyline Drive before entering the Shenandoah Park. We found this Mexican restaurant in the area and decided to give it a try. One of the things I didn't like was that they were not flexible at all about creating something vegetarian for me. They had a vegetable burrito and that's all they would offer. I asked them if they could make me tacos with veggies, and they said no. I found that quite strange. I ordered the Vegetable Burrito, and it was decent. The veggies were not seasoned well inside the burrito. But the sauces around the burrito was delicious. I wish they had more veggie options and also were flexible enough to make tacos or other things with vegetables for me. Overall, not a bad place to try it out. My family who ordered the non-vegetarian food loved it. read more

We went there on own way back from a tubing trip in Front Royal. We went at 4pm just missed the lunch service but still could order their specials. It was a big group of 20 people for a birthday celebration and the staff was able accommodate us. They put us in a separate section. Considering the group size, the service was relatively fast. My margarita was nicely strong. My fajita came sizzling. The portions were big. Relatively inexpensive. One suggestion for improvement : the chips could be served warm. But again, they were free and plenty. So won't complain nor reduce stars. My half mex friend mentioned his horchata was good. So, consider it passed the taste test. El Maguey reminds me of the first-generation Italian-American restaurants of my youth, and so, although it is Mexican, it had a familiar and comforting feel to it. Portions are ample. The food is good -- I went for take-out and my Mom, who lives with us and isn't the biggest fan of Mexican food, really liked it. That says a lot about it. While I waited, the serving staff made sure I had tortilla chips and a beverage, as they could see I was hungry. That extra attentiveness went a long way toward my recommendation. What a hidden gem! My friends and I were trying to decide a place to eat, and one of them highly raved about this place. I'm always hesitant, because I haven't found any solid Mexican food in the dmv area since I'm from the southwest. So I definitely had reservations going in this restaurant. I was so pleasantly surprised! Their menu is huge. Like there's a ton of selections and combos and ways you can order depending on your appetite. I really craved enchiladas, so I ordered the enchilada verdes. It was yummy!! Definitely spicy, which was nice, and everything reminded me of my hometown. They did not skimp out anything - the meat, sauce, sides, and they had free chips and salsa! I left very full, like unhealthy but no regrets kind of full. The ambience is nice. This was the worst Mexican food I have ever had. Not authentic. Just the same made-for-Americans fair with no color. The same ol' brown and beige. I ordered the Avocado Carne Asada Burrito, which came wrapped in foil on a plate. Only one of the four halves had avocado in it. It just tasted like slop thrown together. The beef inside was tough. There was no semblance of cheese or any kind of seasoning to make the dish come together. The service was slow. We never saw our waiter after he brought the food, until we were pretty much done with our meals. Some hot sauce and water would have been nice. Not sure what I expected from Front Royal but I was really happy to find this place! I love Mexican food and I'd been craving it for weeks. I felt extremely blessed when they seated us quickly and gave us corn tortilla chips and some of the best salsa I've had in a while! I got the avocado carne asada burrito which was delicious! You get two moderately-sized burritos which is PLENTY, especially if you're like me and have already gorged yourself on two baskets of chips. I stopped by this little Mexican restaurant while leaving Fort Royal after an afternoon at the Skyline Caverns. Located in a shopping plaza in the downtown section of Fort Royal, El Maguey was the perfect lunch spot. The servers were very prompt and friendly, seating us, taking orders and filling waters. The yellow corn tortilla chips and salsa s were fresh and unlimited. I loved my Shrimp Cocktail which was served in a large margarita glass. The dish came with quite a few shrimp, fresh avocado, onions, cilantro and warm tomato based sauce. Everything was very flavorful and subtly sweet, and a perfect complement to the salty chips. Tuesday is bottle beer day and there's nothing better to go with the food than a cold Modelo Negra at $3 a bottle. There are many lunch specials to pick from that are available until 4 PM. The chicken lunch chimichanga was served with a sauce over it, plated with rice and beans with tomato, lettuce, quac, and sour cream to the side. I tried the seafood burrito plated with white rice with green beans, corn, limas--looked terrible but it was delicious, and beans. The burrito was stuffed with a lot of shrimp. Excellent choice. Lunch specials to go were Pollo chipotle--a grilled chicken breast topped with an excellent sauce, rice, and grilled veggies, chori pollo--grilled chicken breast with rice and beans, chicken quesadilla, and a chicken burrito/chili releno combo. Little TexMex restaurant located in the heart of Front Royal near Rural King. First Visit: The margaritas were ok and their food was average the first visit! Second Visit: I ordered the Seafood burrito... horrible. It tasted like they opened a can of seafood chowder and poured it in a tortilla, rolled into a burrito and put cheese over the top. It actually tasted like clam chowder but the menu said it was supposed to be shrimp and Crab... (zero crab was in there and only one small over cooked shrimp part). The "seafood soup flavored contents were grey with black specks about the same color of gravy. Yuck. Will not return. read more

First we tried 3 times to order online and they failed to receive the order. My fiance and I walk in, no one at the front and the restaurant is completely empty..meaning no tables no business. We walk to the bar and 1 girl sitting at the table seen us and said nothing. Another girl walks out the kitchen and approaches her and they say nothing to us and no acknowledgement at all!
