Not terrible but wouldn't order again. I got the classic burrito and birria tacos and split everything with a friend. They gave sour cream, guac, and salsa on the side, and the burrito was served with a side of rice (no beans though, which I thought was unusual. The burrito was good and the portion of meat inside was generous. The rice that it was served with was a bit boring but tasty nonetheless. I found the whole thing to be a bit lacking in flavor. The salsa and guac were both terrible, which is always my minimum bar for measuring Mexican restaurants. If the salsa and guac aren't at least decent, it's not worth its muster. The birria tacos were pretty tasty and I was impressed by the flavor of the consommé. The birria itself could have been a little more moist and tender, but the flavor was decent. They were reasonably inexpensive ($12 for three I believe). All in all, food probably would have tasted better with a strong margarita alongside it, but it wasn't a horrible lunch by any means. read more

I'm not a fan of Mexican food. but I found myself near here one day and since it looked clean and friendly I decided to go in and look around What a wonderful surprise! The staff were all very, very friendly. I felt they were there to take care of me. The decorations are colorful, very pleasant, yet calming. Every morsel of food I had seemed incredibly fresh and displayed very attractively! Finally, the selections are excellent for anyone, even if, like me, you are not a regular consumer of Mexican food. We decided to try this cute little place hoping to have a great Mexican meal. Unfortunately it was not. The waitress was odd, she didn't seem to know what was going on , so we ordered fajitas. Big mistake, the meat was tough, fatty and no flavor. The rice seemed box no flavor. The guacamole was fake. The tortillas which came when the food was cold, tasted very odd, all in all a terrible place. We returned one meal but they still try to charge us for the rice and beans 13.98. So we decided to try a new place to support small business. It wasn't bad, or great. May try again when things change. I don't want to slam any business for trying to stay afloat in the pandemic. We ordered a chimichanga, some tacos, poppers and churros. I'm aware some of this doesn't travel well, so took that into consideration. The poppers were pretty good, had to heat back up (it's cold out, no ones fault) I threw them in a toaster oven for a few. They were pretty tasty!! The chimichanga is my complaint. It had very dry diced chicken in it. It was a texture thing as there were pieces that were fatty/cartilage. Love the colors and decorations, particularly the Mexican blanket-like tablecloths in this small, quaint place with the best Margarita I have ever ever had! What made it even better was it only cost me 1 cent with a Yelp check-in! Fantastic! Mon and Wed are Margarita specials and Tuesdays are for tacos special pricing! I was warmly greeted and immediately brought chips and the freshest, most delicious salsa--which I devoured! For my meal I had the Huaraches El Paso: huaraches(masa dough with smashed pinto beans) topped with lettuce, tomato, avocado, cheese, steak and cactus! What?!! I loved it! I had never tried cactus and it was very good and complemented the steak. Service was prompt and genuinely friendly. The prices are so reasonable and the portions most generous. I am convinced these yelp reviews are fake. I dined here with my family, and not one of us finished our plate. The food was TERRIBLE. First problem - chips brought to table not hot and stale. Salsa was great. Second problem- I got enchiladas...with steak filling and mole sauce. Steak was not included inside the enchilada but was served as one giant thin piece served over top? It was so tough and was not edible. Mole sauce was the most disgusting part. It tasted like melted hersheys chocolate mixed with cayenne pepper. Too sweet and drenched the whole plate. This is my first and last time I'll eat at this restaurant. Only came because of the location to where we already were. Three stars because our waitress was super friendly and service was nice. However, food was not mediocre at best. When we were seated, we received chips and salsa. The salsa looked promising and the chips were crunchy, not stale like others have mentioned in their reviews. I don't know why, but the salsa tasted sweet and really threw us off because we eat a lot of Mexican food and this was the first time we've had sweet tasting salsa. Honestly, the red flag should have been the Tapatio on the tables. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Tapatio, but I suppose the expectation when dining at a Mexican restaurant is that they have their own hot sauce/salsa. Anyway, I ordered the three crispy tacos with chicken and the hubs ordered three soft street tacos. I asked for spicy salsa and they brought a small container with some kind of green salsa. It wasn't spicy, but maybe to your average person it would be. I do have a really high spicy tolerance, so maybe that's why it wasn't spicy at all. Also, I didn't know there would be an extra charge to ask for spicer salsa! Overall, I wouldn't come to this resto again. I think I'll stick to the one Mexican resto I frequent. read more

In the center of Plainville hidden away, I found El Paso Mexican Restaurant. This little store front is actually a good size restaurant and bar. Tables were covered in colorful Mexican cloths and walls painted bright and fun. This sure was a nice little surprise taco Tuesday spot for me. There were only a few customers so we were instantly greeted and served with chips and salsa. The salsa was super fresh loaded with cilantro and diced onion. For my entree, i got the chicken burrito with rice, lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole, and sour cream. And since it was Taco Tuesday, I also ordered the birrira tacos which had 3 tacos, a side of hot sauce and guacamole. Those were really good. Everything came out really fast and the server was nice. To wash it all down, I sipped on a classic margarita served in a cute cactus glass. Food was good but they wouldn't honor the restaurant.com certificates I bought. The lady kept calling the manager/owner to ask and eventually they said they didn't know how the restaurant got on that site. Stating she never signed up for it. Nothing could be done and I had to pay out of pocket. The place is small and the service was decent so I didn't mind too much. Drinks were ok, not great. We stopped in for lunch today (Wednesday). Our server brought over menus and we were soon nibbling on chips and a fresh salsa that was delicious. My wife and i each ordered the chicken enchiladas plate that included beans, Spanish rice and a soft (Pepsi) drink. I chose red sauce and my wife green, her sauce was plentiful, mine less so. Our enchiladas were almost devoid of chicken and there was nothing special about either our beans or the Spanish rice. We also took home a slice of coconut flan which was way too heavy. Ordered the El Pastor pork tacos for take out, was told 20 minutes. Showed up on time, and waited about another 10 for them to get everything. I was under the impression that they forgot, but was like whatever at least I it'll be hot when it come out. Ironically, when the food was brought out and I took it home, it was cold. Not like "eh, it's been out for a few minutes ", but refrigerator cold. And the cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and sour cream were all over the place, as if they literally threw the tacos into the to go container. Mind you, I live quite literally a minute down the road. This was Plainville's best kept secret. Now with some remodeling it has gotten a little busier. The food is always great no matter what time you go there. This is not your typical Americanized Mexican food covered in cheese. This is Mexican food for Mexicans. I have tried all the other places around and I always compare their food to El Paso's food. This place is a little hard to find, even though it is smack dab in the middle of Plainville. For one thing, it's a storefront two doors down from a bodega that has much flashier signage. Make sure you go into the restaurant. The parking is also tricky. If you're on E. Main St, there is a pair of rutted gravel driveways. One leads to a loading dock; the other does lead to the parking lot, but you might leave a hubcap or a passenger behind. If you approach from Maple, which runs off Whiting and is more or less parallel to E. Main, you have a clear entrance to a large lot. There's a walkway from the parking lot to Whiting St. It isn't next door to the restaurant, it's in the middle of the block, but we're not talking about a hike. The food is very good. Just remember that, despite the name of the place, it isn't Tex-Mex, it's Mexican. I don't know the different regions very well, but the menu refers to Oaxaca and that's in the southwest of Mexico. Most Latin American regions use the same names to refer to different foods, so an empanada from Columbia is going to be different from an empanada from Mexico or a panada from Indonesia. Just keep an open mind. I don't usually bother to read a menu before going out, but I wish I had. I spent a lot of time making up my mind. The menu is extensive, and ranges from platters to build-your-own taco or torta. Everything my wife and I tried was good, including the coconut flan. If you're a margarita fan, you'll find a list of the usual and a few unusual suspects. read more

Went there a few weeks ago and got the carnitas...they were so good. Better than puerta viarta and better than azteca... Wanted to go back again so went on cinco de mayo...should've have went though. The carnitas were on the menu but the cut of meat was totally different. Usually its slow roasted pork ..like a shoulder or butt...this time it was pork chop or something not nearly as good. The sauce this time over powered the meat and the texture was different. My wife ordered the chimichonga and she didnt care for it much...she's used to them not having beans and being fried a lot crispier. I mean look we went on the busiest day so we should've expected some hiccups but just didnt hit the spot like the first time. And this place is hot inside and lacks proper ventilation. They were so packed on may 5th and had no ac running. I saw people with sweat coming down their faces. I'll go back because the 1st experience was good and I thought this was my favorite carnitas ever...I hope its back to the same when we go back. read more

I would have never known about this place if my friend didn't invite me here. Its an authentic mexican restaurant with friendly service and good food. They had a margarita special that was amazing (2 for $11.99) The lunch selection was vast and only $9.99. We ended up doing drinks and the chicken nachos. I have passed by El Paso so many times with intentions of going, and finally had the opportunity to meet some co workers for lunch. The place is very basic, not fancy at all but more of an authentic Mexican feel. They carry all the international beers along with soft drinks in a few coolers in the back of the restaurant. They also sell some goods such as hot sauces, canned and dried food and even movies....kinda like a small local convenience store in back for Mexican dishes. The waitress was very nice and had a great personality. The food comes out exact to what ever photo you see of a specific dish. I had the enchilada with steak lunch. I thought it was very good for the price of $6.99 I've been elsewhere and that dish can be double the price. Someone else in our party had the Cuban sandwich which has, chicken, ham, lettuce, tomato, egg, beef.... I can't remember everything to it but I want to try next time. Also ordered was a dish that had a big piece of thin steak over tortilla chips, a verde sauce and rice and beans. Really a hidden little gem in the center of a sleepy little town. Food is very authentic, everything is a winner. You must try the Coconut Flan for dessert, it is homemade and to die for. Most nights you can get a really good price on an excellent margarita. The bar is small, but packed with fine liquors. There is even a small section of groceries for sale. Thie atmosphere is really quaint, and the attention to service detail is great. This is a must try as you pass through Plainville. Be aware that they are unfortunately closed on Sunday's. My husband found this place on Yelp - we'd been looking for a new Mexican place to try. WOW - it was fantastic! Located on East Main Street in Plainville, it's a family-owned establishment. Lots of bright lights and Bodega meets breakfast diner kind of feel - you aren't coming here for ambiance. But that's a very minor consideration compared to how delicious the food is. Everything was fresh, fresh, fresh, including the chips and salsa. Nothing out of a plastic bag or box here and I'm pretty sure there's no microwave on the premises. I got a chicken chimichanga, which had fajita chicken (chicken STRIPS - not that cat-food-like canned / shredded chicken that everyone else seems to use) and pinto beans - just the right amount of melted cheese on top and the tortilla was done to perfection. I was in love with the first bite - this was the best chimichanga I've ever had. The rice was delicious - it had a hint of nutmeg or cinnamon - really nice. My husband got the Moctezuma Molcajete meat bowl . If you're seriously protein deprived, this dish is for you. It's a cornucopia of meats - steak, shrimp, chicken, chorizo, pork - in a larger version of a guacamole bowl. He loved it, and said the pork was the best pork he's ever had - ever. In his whole life. Being from El Paso, TX and reading some of the reviews, I thought I finally found myself a good, authentic Mexican food restaurant that was close to my home. I was very excited but also very wrong. I plan to give it another chance because everyone deserves a second chance and the food wasn't horrible, but it's nothing like the Mexican food I grew up with. My decision was to go with something easy that you can't mess up, just to check it out. Who smothers flautas with enchilada sauce? It's not an enchilada! Totally ruined everything about my flautas. And the rice and beans? No. Canned pinto beans, served cold (probably not on purpose) and dried out spanish rice that was nothing near the quality I expected. My boyfriend got the paella.
