Visiting from San Antonio, TX we came specifically on Wednesday August 9th for the 1130am giraffe encounter feeding but when we showed up that day, they said it was cancelled. It was upsetting that they don't have updated information on the website. We could not stay for the afternoon one they were still supposedly having so it was very upsetting. Other than that the bird show was pretty neat and interesting. I liked how the girl doing the bird show was very energetic and happy. The zoo is definitely in better condition than the San Antonio one. We got to see the lion feeding which was interesting. If you are planning to see something I highly suggest you don't look at the website and call ahead. read more

One word to describe this zoo. Disappointing. Overpriced for the "entertainment". Most exhibits are closed down. Animals don't appear to be very well taken care of. Lots of smelly spots (I know it's a zoo) but I mean more smell than your typical zoo in places that shouldn't stink. Really probably saw more wild birds flying in to eat trash than animals. Most were asleep or not even there. Train was not running. Line to feed giraffe was 50+ people long. Most indoor exhibits are run down. Can't even see in some of the exhibits because the glass is so old and fogged over. Overall just a waste of time and money. read more

The zoo was on the small to average size. Most of the animals were sleeping. However it was 91 degrees when we went. The train was closed so that was a little disappointing. But every so often there was misting areas that kept us a little cooler. Price is fair and the animals are cute. read more

Its a pretty cool place to hit up if you're bored and not too pricey. 12$ for adults from 12-59 i believe, military was only 9$ each for us. For that price, you still get a good amount of area to walk through and a good variety of animals to see. There were lots of areas though that were shut down for whatever reason and it seemed that if that particular one was not in service for animals, they used it for storage which looked really tacky. There was also a good amount of windows that were too filthy or had tons of calcium build up which made it impossible to see through. Saturdays has the most shows to watch so i would go that day. There's a nice cafe there which sold reasonably priced food too. We only had the cookie and choc pudding which were really good, but we saw their pizza and pastas which looked really good too! read more

This is a standard zoo that isn't one of the best in the country but manages to have a decent array of animals. A huge factor that has to be considered when deciding which animals to care for is the weather. Here in El Paso it is dry heat and can reach up to 110+ degrees! Some of the animals you can expect to find here are Komodo dragons, otters, tropical birds, and elephants. The layout of the zoo is not too shabby but make sure to bring some comfy shoes as you'll definitely need them. Located close to the border of El Paso and Juarez. read more

I've been visiting El Paso for the last 6 years and decided it was finally time to go to the zoo. I'm glad we did. My girlfriend and I decided to make the trip in the afternoon which was perfect. The zoo only costs 10 bucks a person, and it takes about 2 hours to see the whole thing. One side has Animals of Asia and Animals of America, and the other side has Animals of Africa. They have quite a few to see. Alligator, turtle, sea lion, birds, reptiles, lions, tigers and bears (oh my!). The lion exhibit rivals that of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, which was cool. I liked that there was plenty of room for them in the enclosure, and there were multiple vantage points for people to see. For a nice zoo, with enough animals to keep you busy at a great price, this is the place. read more

This zoo is soooo tiny and over half the exhibits are empty and those are also tiny. It's the same as putting a dog in a cage that they can walk about 5 steps in and leaving them in there their whole life. Their staff is rude very rude. It is maybe worth $12 to go here for the amount of animals they have, though you couldn't pay me to go back because of their rude unwelcoming staff and poor conditions the animals are in. They do offer military discount but only to active duty which I also don't agree with. read more

I do not recommend the Grasslands Cafe. Terrible customer service at this cafe. I have to deal with attitude from staff whenever I go up to place my order. Plus ketchup dispenser is often empty with no condiment cups. Tables are dirty and food is gross and overpriced as well. The awful restaurant ruins the whole zoo experience. Workers need to be retrained or replaced and menu needs to be revamped. read more

When visiting I tried to keep in mind that this was probably going to be a modest zoo being that El Paso isn't even close to being known for its zoo but I was still a little disappointed. It only took an hour and a half to see everything (and take lots of picture). The Africa exhibit, which was referenced in the Feb 07 review, is still is under construction more than two years later. And there is a reptile house under construction also. The special "encounters" are staggered over the whole day which with the hour and a half visit, we didn't see any of them. Granted I went on an afternoon (Saturday) and it was kind of toasty but this is El Paso and it isn't even close to the hottest part of the summer yet. Most of the little food stands were closed. On a Saturday afternoon when it is 90+ out, having the little ice cream stand closed should be criminal. On the plus side it was only $5 ($4 with military discount). Maybe in 2+ years when it has "doubled in size" which is what the web site says, it will be worth more that 2 stars but for now that is all I can give it. read more

We really do love this zoo. Spend all day, or just a few hours. You choose. My kids love it, and it's great family time together. We travel enough that paying the $99/membership here gets us enough in discounts across the country at other zoos and aquariums. We also come here about 6 times a year. So, totally worth the membership! I hope that they continue their expansion and get new animals in through the years! It would be great to see this zoo really come to fruition like ABQ has over the past years. read more

The El Paso Zoo seems like a poplar spot for families to enjoy the day. Children 2 years old and under are free and they have military discounts. I suggest getting on the 6 minute train ride around to see the animals, perfect on a hot day if you don't want to walk around that much. Towards the back of the zoo is their main attraction which was a massive tree house playground area with splash pad for children. Families bring coolers filled with food/drinks and picnic tables in the shade are available. Its a lot of fun I can see why it's a popular to spend the day at the zoo, they are currently extending and adding new areas. Lots of construction happening but it should look good when it's all done. Spoke to some of the managers and they assured the final product will be enjoyable, but for now they have safely blocked off the construction area. She also mentioned apart of the construction was so that chiwawas were going to have their own area. I was very convinced and can't wait to visit again. read more

I use to love coming here when I visited family when I was younger! Sure it's not the most high end zoo with elaborate exhibits, but it is a great teaching tool for young children. Biological conservatism and animal welfare should be taught to young children and this zoo along with many others around the country (no matter how small) help establish the human-animal bond. I support more funding for this place. Great job to the veterinary staff and zoologists who tend to these animals. I love this little place. read more

El Paso Zoo is conveniently located in Central EP which makes the commute convenient for people on both the east and west side of the city! I went in the beginning of April and was surprised it wasn't that crowded for a Saturday. The weather was great and the park is pretty decent sized, to where you can view the whole zoo in about an hour and a half. I was able to see giraffes, lions, elephants, spider monkeys and even visited the Sea animals exhibit which was an awesome experience. They also have a mini train ride for $2-3 each which is very fun for children. It doesn't cover the whole park, but you'll get to see a lot. The cover charge to get in is relatively cheap. It's about $12 for adults and kids are less priced. They also have a gift shop which sells cool souvenirs. The only thing I would say needs improvement is the cleanliness of the restrooms. There wasn't toilet paper in half the stalls and they were pretty gross. But overall, we had fun and took many pics. I'd recommend coming here on a nice cool day. read more

First off, over priced. Get yourself the membership, makes more sense. While the El Paso Zoo tries to continue improving, there is still something else lacking. The admission fee does not match what you see here. We find ourselves spending time at the tree house. Which is more like a mad monkey house when there are school field trips. The restaurant is ok, but also overpriced. Luckily, you can bring in your own food. They do offer military discount, but only for AD. If you are retired, you don't count. Full price for you. We keep going back, because truth be told, there are not that many nice places in El Paso where you just can stroll around enjoying the shade of trees. read more

They have great facilities. The design and layout of the zoo is well thought out. My only qualm is the zoo begins closing things down at 4:40. We were in the Asian section of the zoo at 4:40 going across the bridge when they stopped us and told us it had already closed down. They stated their policy is to "have everyone out of the zoo by 5". If that is the policy I think it needs to be made know when you enter the park. But there is nothing stating this, only that the park closes at 5. Please make this an official part of your public notices if this truly is a thing. read more

We brought our daughter here in August, we were shocked at just how awesome it was. We were very happy about the water area for kids and the playground was great and very imaginative, though I would not recommend the largest slide (through the tree trunk) for toddler aged children it was a very steep incline with no support if a child is to fall backwards. My daughter played at the zoo for hours and we enjoyed it as well. We will definitely be visiting again. read more

It's somewhat tough to rate a zoo based on a solo visit and the fact that it was a Monday afternoon. I could skip through the park wherever, arms flung out if I pleased and not run into a soul. It was liberating and eerie, but then I remembered I was surrounded by tons of furry, feathery, scaly, etc. friends.. Overall I enjoyed almost everything in the park with the exception of the elephant exhibit which clearly does not give the animals enough space to roam (observed by their light rocking motions). Plenty of great viewpoints for most animals. Some parts of the park are under construction or empty. Could use some help. I'd rather give 3.5 stars, but since it's a fairly large zoo in an interesting location, I have to bump it up to 4 for the work put in to maintain it here. You can easily spend over an hour here. The zoo is getting better and according to the city has major advances coming soon, the food like any zoo is pricey and the survivors expensive too. The food to eat is basic food corn dogs hot dogs chicken etc The animals are very vocal at first opening so if you've ever wanted to hear an elephant trumpet I'd say go then. The monkeys are chirping early in the morning too. The only down side is their military discount active duty only I wish they'd expand that to retired or at least those medically retired. read more

I lived in El Paso for many years, knowing we had a zoo, but never going. Judging the zoo from the outside you expect it to be tiny and not worth the effort. Boy was that a mistake. The zoo is well appointed and growing more every year. I went from never going to taking my son on nearly a weekly basis. The giraffe experience and meet the zoo keeper are among our favorite things. The addition of the bird show has just added to our enjoyment. If it's been a while or you are judging a book by its cover, stop in. We did and are now members. read more

I will start by saying this is a fairly small zoo. However, it is a very nice zoo for its size. I will start with the CONS: Mainly, the size. There are only just around a 1000 animals in total. In additional, certain areas of the zoo have a lot of dead space. That dead space could easily be turned in exhibits or attractions, but instead zoo patrons are left with some empty space. Lastly, the zoo seems understaffed at times. PROS: The exhibits that are available are really nice. They have some cool interactive exhibits, where the kids can get real close to the animals within their habitats. The exhibit decor is pretty neat, with each habit decorated to match it's real life habitat. The staff is friendly, and eager to help if required. The train is nice, and it loops all the way around the Africa exhibit. The Aviary is cool, and they have some pretty rad birds inside. They have an awesome Sea Lion exhibit, and host some wicked shows on occasion. The souveniour shop is meager at best, but there is definitely one there. Great to snag the kiddos a zoo theme toy or stuffed animal! Parking is usually not a problem. They have a fairly large dedicated parking lot, however, during some events the parking lot can fill up. In those situations, they usually have overflow parking right across the street at the El Paso Coliseum. Overall, this is a great small time zoo. They allow coolers or lunch boxes, so if you are wanting a nice day for the family, pack a lunch, hit up the zoo, and enjoy a day with the family. read more

We had a fun day but a very eventful one. My key fob somehow came off my keys and we thought we were stuck. Everyone there was completely helpful. My husband ended up finding it after a long couple of ours trying to retrace our steps. The patk it's self was pretty clean. It wasn't very busy. My husband, daughter, and I went this afternoon for the first and last time. The staff was fine, to be clear. They offered military discount, which was nice; and our daughter got in free since she's under 2 years. Unfortunately, the zoo was just not that good. The whole layout was odd...The first area we walked through had llamas, a donkey, hogs and sheep, oh and goats... And I was thrown off.. Like, this is a zoo... Not a farm, lol! But once we got further in there was actual "zoo" animals. The sad thing, though, was that the animals had tiny spaces (in comparison to literally every other zoo I've been to.) Also, we didn't get to take the train, since you can't bring strollers on it. We saw everything today except the "Africa" area, we were beyond ready to leave after an hour and 45 minutes. Family spring break outing to the zoo. This place has come a long way from the small old days. New amphitheater is awesome for shows with plenty of seating. Prices are reasonable, but if you got kids and want to keep them busy at times I recommend buying a membership. It pays for itself after 2 visits and you can come all year long. Exhibits are nice and plenty of fun for the kids. Playground and splash pad are great features. This small zoo is tucked away near the El Paso County Coliseum. The park is themed by continent...right now they're working on the Africa expansion. They say it'll be like the savannahs...like being on a safari... They have guided tours, classes for kids, and a great gift shop. The Grasslands Cafe is their main restaurant. I'm used to tourist spots like this skyrocketing their prices to make an extra buck but they're not into that...they're reasonably priced. The food is nothing to write about but it keeps the kids happy. Cheeseburgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, ice cream, etc....typical amusement park cuisine. They're affiliated with Cold Stone Ice Cream. If you throw your next birthday party there, a Cold Stone Ice Cream cake is included in the package. read more
