But the real surprise was the pineapple bowl...rice and steak cooked to perfection, served in an actual pineapple. It's giving tropical, it's giving delicious. I have been a loyal customer of El Patron for over 10 years, regularly ordering almost the same items. However, today's experience was extremely disappointing. I ordered 3 plain tortillas with a side of shredded cheese for my child. I understand this isn't a typical order, but it's something we've done consistently for years. When the bill came, I was shocked to see a charge of $3.99 for a single tortilla and the shredded cheese, totaling $12 for three tortillas and cheese--more than what I paid for my actual meal, which was an enchilada with rice and beans. If you check the menu, a regular taco with meat or chicken is $3.99. When I brought this to the waitress's attention, she said she needed to speak with the manager. The manager recognized me and insisted those prices had always been posted, but he did not offer any accommodation or explanation. The receipt even shows the tortillas and cheese were rung up as enchiladas. This isn't about the money--it's about the lack of professionalism. When we tried to explain that we've been eating there for years and were simply inquiring about the price change, they laughed at us and were completely unaccommodating. Decided to visit El Patron Saturday and get take out. I'd heard great things about the one on the westbank and decided to try this one out. When I walked in, it was basically empty. They had less than 10 customers. I ordered a steak plate that came with onions,bell peppers, beans, rice, guacamole, and lettuce. The girl who took my order was nice. She said it would be around 10 mins for my food and she was right. To my surprise when I opened it there were also some tortillas included. While it smelled good, and the steak and onions looked good, it was lacking in flavor. I had to put Tony's on my steak and peppers because there wasn't much flavor. Once I cut the steak up and put everything on a tortilla, it tasted okay but still not great. If I go back I'd try something different. read more

We were skeptical because the reviews aren't that great, but this place was fantastic. The A/C works well the place was nice and cold. The music in the place was not too loud and the booths are really big and comfortable. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful with every request we had. The salsa was our first indication that this place would be good, it was thick and flavorful not watery and sad. I wish I took photos of the rest of our meal but it was so good we dove right in. We had enchiladas verdes and they accommodated us and put two sunny side up eggs on those. The Spanish rice was so perfectly cooked, not mushy, and it had a sweetness to it like it was made with fresh tomatoes. I had pollo mole and it tasted homemade. My husband had carnitas and they were tender, flavorful, and had a nice crisp to them. He got the salsa verde on the side with them and it was creamy delicious and had the perfect heat from Serranos in it. The charro beans were also so good! So much flavor and had beef, bacon, and salchichas in it. So so good. I highly recommend giving them a chance. Great place for a casual Mexican meal. One of my favorite Mexican places in the area and it's a great place to get out of the chaos of the city. It's your standard texmex with the free chips and salsa. They just do everything right. All the ingredients are good and the service is always lovely. I recommend taco Tuesday if you're on a budget. You can get out of there for under $10 and be totally satisfied. read more

This little restaurant is hidden away and you could almost miss it. If you love authentic Mexican cuisine served in perfect sized portions with amazing service, then you clearly don't want to. All of the food was amazing, and the environment was clean and inviting. We ordered the enchiladas, while not what I expected had a flavor profile that left my tongue singing and my stomach satisfied. The refried beans weren't quite as thick as I'd like, but that didn't hurt their flavor or my enjoyment in the slightest. My wife and I used to eat here regularly, years ago, but stopped going after the service and quality of food went down. We decided to give them another try. The first thing I noticed was the lack of other diners. It was around 6:00 pm on a Friday night. Besides my wife and I there was only 1 other couple in the restaurant. I just thought well, maybe it's just a slow night. However, other restaurants, that we usually eat at, had packed out parking lots. My wife and I ordered fajitas. I had chicken and steak fajitas, my wife had the chicken. Our food came in a reasonable time. The chicken and steak strips were laid on top of what was almost entirely onions. There were a few strips of bell pepper (3 or 4 pieces) mixed in with the strips of onion. I guess there was a shortage on bell pepper.....with the first bite of chicken I knew we had made a mistake eating at El Patron. It looked like the chicken and steak were probably cooked separately and then placed on top of the onions. The food was very bland and tasteless. They were the worst fajitas I have I ever eaten. The steak was tough and tasteless also. I took about 4 bites and sent the dish back. My wife ate about half of hers. We were both disappointed. Couple the poor quality, tasteless food with the loud, obnoxious music and televisions displaying a show called "ET" and you have a recipe to drive customers away. No wonder this restaurant was practically empty. We won't be back.... read more

Visiting the NOLA area for the first time and wanted some Mexican food. Found this place and I keep finding myself back here. The food is so flavorful and authentic. I thought it was going to be a Tex-mex type restaurant and the reviews almost stopped me from coming. This place is truly worth the trip. All the dishes my husband and I have tried are seasoned to perfection! They have a bar area as well and their 'Micheladas' were delicious with various selections of Mexican beer as well. The margaritas are cold and refreshing. This is definitely a place someone needs to check out at least once! The waiters are very polite and welcoming. I've passed El Patron innumerable times and decided to stopped by for Happy Hour. The inside of the restaurant is looks like a Cinco de Mayo celebration with Mexican flags strewn throughout the restaurant and Mexican celebratory art on the wall. Prior to being seated, I asked the young man that would be my waiter for throughout the evening if he would should me the restroom. The waiter pointed me to a very rudimentary, dual occupant ladies room. After existing the restroom, my waiter was no longer around so I returned to the greeter station but before I could completely make it there a waitress swooped up behind me and said I will seat you. I was seated in a slightly rickety booth and when I inquired as to the happy hour the waitress told me it didn't exist. My initial waiter was at the cashier, so I inquired to him if that was the case and he immediately dismissed her from my table. The waitress apologized and stated that "her English isn't good". The constant flow of a trickle customers made me think this place may have something but I would soon find out that I was very wrong. My waiter was attentive and kind. The margarita was good but it wasn't the best. The enchiladas were absolutely horrible! The meat was tasteless and the cheese was processed and oily. I've been here several times. I'm never "wowed" by the food, but I haven't been terribly disappointed either. I suppose the cuisine is a bit uninspired, if you will. I preferred Tony's on Paris Road, but that place has since closed. Ultimately, if you're in Da Parish and craving Mexican food, El Patron will suffice. Today, I ordered a combination plate: chili con carne, beef taco, enchilada with rice and beans. The beans had a nice meaty flavor and the rice was fluffy, as desired. Pretty run of the mill faux Mexican food. Not many vegan options, but the guacamole is EPIC. Best I have had in a long time. My bean burrito was boring, and probably had lard in the beans. Service was pretty good, considering I was in a huge group. I was working, so I can't vouch for the margaritas. Decor is nice in some spots, but WEIRD all around. Y'all! Best Mexican food I've had since 2000 in New Mexico! The shredded chicken nachos were seasoned so perfectly and tasted so good it was impossible not to lick the plate clean. It was also so filling that we just had ala carte chili rellenos. Those were also really delicious stuffed with cheese and beef and we had it covered with the queso. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone that wants to try fresh made Mexican food. The prices were great too. The service was excellent. The staff was very friendly. I had the California Burrito and was really huge and quite tasty. It had chicken, fajita beef, and huge shrimps. I could only eat half. My wife had her typical taquitos and loved them especially with the excellent guac. Chips were fresh and warm and loved the little salsa carafe. I give El Patron 5 stars because it's one of a small handful of Mexican restaurants in all of the N.O. area where service was excellent and their prices are BELOW market rates. If you're comparing across the board to all restaurants in the New Orleans area you can't beat it. We're from L.A, CA and there are many lousy Mexican restaurants there. They made an error with my take out order. I called, thinking they'd make it right. But after taking time to confirm the mistake was theirs, they asked that we return the food for a replacement. I suggested because of distance that a free lunch on another day would be preferable. They offered only a 20% discount on the next purchase. Their error was in their favor, serving me a much less expensive meal than I paid for. At the option of this bad review or a coupon for a free meal...the person on the phone raised her voice telling me I could do anything I want, etc. The food is not bad, but certainly not worth buying again. read more

The most awful place I have ever been to. The only reason we ended up in this crap of a place was because my husband took a wrong turn into the area and we had hungry teenagers with us. After we got seated we they brought our drinks and we ordered the Queso con chorizo. They brought us a watery mess. It looked like queso but it was so watery that we could not eat it. Then we told them we were ready to order after 15 minutes of being ignored. The girl just said 'hold on' and went on to organizing tables for a large group I am assuming. Ignored another 10 minutes we called another server over and he said 'hold on' to us again. Lol. Continuing to be ignored for several minutes after we decided to get up and walk out just paying for what we order so far. Service is terrible and by the look of it...terrible food. Personally I think this is the best Mexican restaurant in St. Bernard Parish and I know a lot of people who love it too. I always get the vegetarian plate but it is HEAVY on the cheese (albeit very tasty!). Decor is a little tacky but as long as the food is good I'm a fan. Prices are very reasonable. read more
