Lovely date night with the wife here at the Ivory Grille. The menu has a flavorful selection with many classic steakhouse options. Everything down to the bread and butter, was tasty. I had a ribeye smothered in blue cheese with crispy fries. My wife enjoyed the Alfredo. My bread pudding was a bit tough but still hit the spot. I'm torn between three stars and four stars with this restaurant. The people I ate with said their meals were good but I didn't think mine was very good. It was just chicken parmigiana so not a difficult meal to make. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't that good either. I expected much more with a place like this because the prices are quite high. The atmosphere was nice and they did give me a piece of pie because it was my birthday. So I'm hoping that other items on the menu are better than what I had. We arrived at 5:30 for our 5:30 reservation and were seated promptly. This was on August 9, 2025. Our server was Kristi and she was very polite and prompt. I ordered a Merlot and my friend ordered a Sauvignon Blanc. For our entrees we ordered the KC strip special and the Mushroom Manicotti for my friend. The steak was medium rare and it was excellent. My friends Manucotti was much too spicy. She only consumed a few bites. She ate most of my birthday cheesecake. We left after the meal. I thought that the service was excellent but that the menu was inaccurate for my partner. I've was abandoned for a few days (spousal unit and an old friend are re-living their summer camp days on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan). So I decided to do an overnight solo staycation (sort of). Caught the westbound Amtrak Missouri River Runner to Sedalia, about a 1:10 ride. From the train station in Sedalia, about a four block walk down Ohio Street to the historic Bothwell Hotel, which has been lovingly restored and features the splendid Ivory Grill restaurant and Oak Room bar (also outdoor seating). Dinner at the bar was under the care of my new friend Jensen, who impressed me from the start by hand-stuffing blue cheese olives for my Bombay Sapphire. I had the house salad (yum!) and objectively, the very best pork chop I've ever eaten in my life. Locally farm-raised and marinated in hard apple cider for 48 hours before being seasoned and grilled just shy of medium. Absolutely perfect. The staff could not have been nicer and were generous with their stories about the place. The headline is that a very young bellhop from many years ago ended up becoming a tradesman, and then started his own (very successful) construction company. Decades later, he bought the then-closed and deteriorating Bothwell, poured millions of dollars into restoring it, and still owns it. His daughter owns and runs the restaurant and bar. I was unaware that both Jefferson City and Sedalia once vied for being capital of Missouri post-St. Charles. Jeff City ended up becoming the capital and Sedalia of course got the state fair. They both got the railroad and Amtrak is kind enough to stop at each. In fact, if you live in St. Louis or Kansas City or anywhere in between, I highly recommend Sedalia as an overnight train stop, if only to experience the Bothwell. The Bothwell is moderately priced, includes a modest breakfast buffet, and has outrageously comfortable beds. They give guests a 10% off coupon for food (not drinks) purchased in the dining room or the bar. They feature Ozark coffee which is delicious, and was served to me at the bar in a heavy, traditional diner mug including a little white pitcher with slightly clotted heavy cream. The menu is plain. Hard to choose something you really want to try. I ordered the Chef's choice (it was not on the menu). And it was not delicious. Rice was seasoned too much, mussels were tasteless, sauce was really good, but that's it. I think it was the best I could order, but I would not get it again for sure. read more

This restaurant is in a historic hotel. Beautiful, the floors were done in the 1920's. I have the pimento cheese ball. They were big and gooey. The sauce was a great compliment. The scallops with risotto was so good I was part of the clean plate club. Julianna was great and very helpful with answering questions. Stop by if you are in the area! Great history too! read more

We were visiting Sedalia from san Antonio and were looking for a place to have a really nice dinner. We found the restaurant to be unusually pleasant and the food to be exceptional. We had the ivory Grill salad, stuffed mushrooms and the braised short ribs. It was complemented by some Hess Cabernet Sauvignon. Our server was Isabella, who was a total joy! I had the best filet of my life Saturday. It was seasoned to perfection, with a delightful crust. It melted in my mouth! The service and quality of food we received is not easy to come by these days. The Food was outstanding. I had a filet which was cooked to perfection, seasoned well and tasty. The Whiskey sauce was also flavorful. The mashed potatoes could have used some flavor and the sauce as well. My wife had the sliders which were also very good. The bread basket and cheddar butter was the best. Drinks were a strong poor. The only downside was the service was slow and chaotic. If they would have a cocktail server and bus person dedicated to those services it would help out a great deal. Other than that this is a good restaurant to say the least. The other food we saw coming out of the kitchen looked delicious. We will be back. So I made a repeat appearance to this place located in the Hotel Bothwell mainly for nostalgia. Had dinner there the first time for a special occasion. So me and my guests ordered different things so that we could sample each other's meals. I ordered the seafood ravioli. Second guest had the steak and the third had the ivory grill chicken. I also had the crab cake appetizer because I had a hunch the ravioli wouldn't be filling. Being a crab cake afficionado I could tell from how they looked it wasn't going to be good. They looked really "bready" and packaged vs. freshly made. As I thought they were not good at all. Then the main course came out. They also had a "I came out of a jar" taste. I was very underwhelmed. The chicken one of my other guests had came out with Brussels sprouts which was different than what was in the menu. When we asked the waitress why she stated they ran out of what was on the menu so they replaced it with Brussels sprouts (without asking what would be a suitable replacement). Then they asked if there was something else we would like which was asparagus. They then brought out 3 asparagus spears. Literally 3! Later the waitress brought out the chef to see what was wrong with the meal. We explained and he apologized and offered dessert on him. Because of that level of concern and the gesture I'm giving them a higher rating than I would normally. And I'm willing to give them another chance as well. Many different food items were ordered and everyone was well pleased with his/her food. My husband and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at the Ivory Grill last night and cannot say enough good things about it! The chef prepared the most awesome appetizers, dinner, and dessert. We enjoyed prime rib, red snapper on lemon and goat cheese risotto, smoked bacon wrapped dates and goat cheese, watermelon salad, gooey butter cake dessert and more. The quality of food, presentation, service and experience was equal to the 5 star restaurant experiences we have had. A hidden gem for sure. Thank you to the chef who is preparing such incredible dishes. We are looking forward to driving an hour back just for another great meal! read more

Excellent meal at the end of a day riding on the Katy Trail. My steak was excellent and cooked as I'd requested (though not evenly). Great baked potato and asparagus. House salad was nice. Edit: We tried The Ivory Grille again and were pleasantly surprised at some really nice new changes! The Caesar salads were fantastic with a new creamy dressing and the croutons were crisp and crunchy. I ordered the sea scallops, and they were fantastic! Four huge scallops in a champagne butter sauce with cheddar garlic smashed potatoes and an asparagus and mushroom medley- SO great! My fiance ordered the Stuffed Chicken Breast, with the mashed potatoes as well- and it was great! Very deserving of the five star rating! ---------------------------------------- You don't automatically think of Sedalia, MO for fine dining, but The Ivory Grille may change your mind. I had heard about this place for awhile and decided to try it out. We started out with an appetizer: calamari. I have had calamari at several restaurants, but the calamari here was definitely the best. It's served with cocktail sauce instead of marinara, which was different, but complemented it well. Next we had Caesar salads, which really weren't anything to write home about. They lacked flavor, and could have definitely added some sort of sharp cheese (like asiago) or anchovies for salt. I ordered the Ivory Grille Chicken, which is a massive chicken breast atop a mushroom cream sauce and linguine. It was flavorful and scrumptious. The chicken was tender and moist and the sauce was yummy. My boyfriend ordered the steak sandwich, which he found was okay, but just alright, nothing exciting or revolutionary. To end our meal, we had been told by a friend to try the cheesecake. We selected the plain cheesecake with raspberry sauce. It was fantastic. The raspberry complemented the cheesecake perfectly, and it had a dark chocolate crust. Overall, I was impressed with The Ivory Grille. I would like a few more pasta options and I'd like to see the Caesar revamped. read more

I set up a business dinner here and chose the restaurant based on my grandparents' recommendation - they live about an hour away. They called it the "best restaurant in Sedalia." I'd have to agree - there aren't many fine dining options in the city. The food was good (portions are huge) and the menu had tons of meat options. Not sure if there were many options for vegeterian eaters. I asked the waitress about the wine selection, and she had no idea about it, so that was kind of a bummer. The wine selection is fairly sizey, though, so if you know what you want, you'll probably see it. It was easy to make a reservation, but we felt silly for doing so - there were only 2 other people in the restaurant on Thursday night! Recommend for a special occasion or business dinner. read more

When you step into the Ivory Grille, the wonderful smells let you know that you are in for a culinary treat. The manager greats you with a smile and ask you "how you are doing", which is very rare nowadays. It has a relaxing ambiance of original artwork and upbeat music that fits perfectly with the white linen tablecloths. Even the busy servers take the time to say hello. We started off with some fresh-baked rolls and a soup du jour, called Cheeseburger. The soup was rich and creamy, with lots of different flavors in every bite. All the soups are made from scratch with innovative recipes that you can't find in any other restaurant. Then they brought out an incredible meat and cheese tray on a wood butcher block with all kinds of healthy stuff. It was beautifully arranged and delicious. Our main course was the Rueben, which was stacked tall with fresh juicy meat on marbled rye, served with a fresh pickle. We also had the Prime Rib, served with fresh steamed broccoli, a huge loaded baked potato, and warm rolls. Part of the dining experience is how the food looks and the placement was not only original it ended up tasting even better. You can tell that Chef Chris P. cares about his food by how much attention he puts into every dish. Only the freshest ingredients are used. Stopping by our table to check on how we were doing was a nice touch, most Chef's do not do that. It was so interesting hearing about his extensive training and all the different styles he uses to fuse into these original dishes. Our server Yelena was very nice, attentive and knowledgeable about the preparation of the food, along with the menu choices. You can tell that all the staff enjoys being there. The desserts looked amazing, but we were so full that we did not try them. There was so much food that we had a nice picnic the next day with our take-home and it was still great. Usually, eating dinner does not end up being such a highlight of the trip, but in this case, it truly was. We are looking forward to our next visit and trying something new, but the steak was so good I will probably end up ordering that again! read more

We made reservations a week ahead for Saturday night. When we arrived, we were seated at a table in the corner by the exit door (very cramped) -- that was a sign of what was to come. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir. Twenty minutes later after watching others order a drink and be served, we were told they did not have the wine in stock. So we ordered another Pino. They brought our salads and I asked about the wine. Five minutes later it came (so 35 minutes to get a bottle of wine). Our dinner came fairly quickly, but one of our steaks (ordered medium) came very rare. But it took 10 minutes to find a waitress and another 15 minutes to get the steak grilled to medium. By this time the, one meal was done. The food was not bad, but it was also nothing special -- the sides were barely warm. The waitress did her best to try to make up for the bar and kitchen's errors. She was polite and told us about staff issues in the bar and kitchen (new bartender and head chef on vacation). She also offered a 10% discount on the food (not bar) and send the bar manager and maitre 'd over to talk. (We already had a coupon for staying in the hotel for 10% off so her discount was nothing special.) We said we are not hard to please, but this meal was bad. They said they were sorry and offered a drink/dessert to make up for the problem. We appreciate the offer bur would have preferred to pay for a good meal. Running a restaurant takes cooperation from all areas -- the waitress is the front line, but the bar, kitchen, and help all needs to do their job to make it work. So, with poor service and an average food, I doubt that the Ivory Grille will get our business again. read more

This place has excellent decor reminds me of an old Oak Room. Overall the food was really good but the crab cakes were terrible. The duck was excellent but the fillet was way over peppered yet cooked perfectly. Our waitress knew absolutely nothing about where the meat came from or how it was graded. She was trying to make things up and as a beef producer I called her out on them and she wouldn't even go to the kitchen and ask. She did however make an excellent suggestion for a glass of scotch it was one of the best I have ever had. read more
