El Camino Real advertised as being authentic and they are right! We were skeptical being from So. California but were proved wrong! The beans and rice are very good. The table salsa was very mild but when we requested spicy salsa it did not disappoint! The steak was yummy and the tamale to my surprise is the best authentic tamale I've found in a restaurant. (They covered it in a chili and bean mixture- not authentic but is common practice in the US) The entire staff is very attentive, friendly and helpful!! Their food was delicious and pricing consistent with the rest of the area. Their queso has a touch of pepperjack and I really enjoyed it. That said, I know they were busy but their service was a bit lacking. The food across the street is just as good but their staff are much friendlier. Came for lunch with a friend and left completely unimpressed. In high school back in the day, my mom used to buy us those frozen, Banquet Mexican TV dinners. Our meals here were reminiscent of those. Bland, flavorless, mushy texture and in general, a big ol' plate of 15 dollar blah. I really dislike having to leave a negative review and always try to find at least one thing that I can be positive about. Concerning this meal, my only positive remarks are regarding the service. We stopped here on our way to Lake of the Ozarks for an early dinner. This is our 2nd time here we really liked it so much we made sure to stop again! The chips and salsa were very good as was the cheese dip! We had the Chicken Chimi and this Burrito, sorry I can't remember the name of it. The burrito had a little kick to it and a great sauce and filled with beef! The Chimi was huge and overly stuffed with shredded chicken, one of the best I've ever had! Did not seem like very authentic Mexican food to me? They couldn't even chop up their tomatoes. Beans and rice look like they're out of a bag. I'm pretty sure they use on the border tortilla chips from Walmart as well. The staff was OK which is why they got anything but a one star review. BEST Mexican food around this area. I love their Vegetarian #3, and their margaritas and drinks are to die for! They are always exceptionally friendly and listen well to their customers. It's a great place to go for in-restaurant eating, or take-out. I recommend their white cheese sauce (queso blanco) and their incredible enchiladas. First the good - Actractive outside ,signage, decor & nice patio. The hot salsa was very good! Service was more than adequate, polite and prompt. Strange - No bar. Only Bud Light on tap. No Mexican beer. Bad - Food. I ordered Enchiladas Rancheras. Basically a chicken enchilada with red sauce. The sauce was sweet. Almost like Pace Picante with sugar added. I had 3 bites and stopped. After looking around I'm not sure they have a kitchen but only a bunch of microwaves. All the Enchiladas are stuffed with cheese then topped with various meats. Tells me they came from a bag, were warmed and topped. My food came out in less than 5 minutes. Definitely not made after I ordered. Very Poor - The bill included a "Service Fee". It was small, 3%. I dined alone & still tipped 20% but have no idea what this charge is for. Dislike being surprised with mystery charges. Won't be back. read more

Went down to Springfield from Kansas City on a business trip and stopped by at El Camino Real. The place looks modern with good interior and atmosphere. For lunch and dinner there certainly are a lot of options, both Tex-Mex and more classic Mexican dishes. I landed on the El Gordo special with shrimp, rice and avocado. The shrimp were very well cooked and tasted very good. I did the mistake of pouring too much hot sauce on the dish, however it was very enjoyable. The staff is attentive and the items are well priced. My one complaint would be the smell in the restroom. It is one of those strong scents that is used to cover up other scents. Perhaps consider replacing? The restaurant also seemed to be I der construction when I was there as one dining room was completely blocked off. There are many Mexican restaurants in the area so competition is stiff, however I will remember El Camino Real. read more

Went in while passing thru town on business, as I needed something quick and because it was pretty much the highest rated place in town. First of all--look at the two salsas in the picture. The one on the right is the house salsa they bring with your chips. It basically tastes like someone added jalapeño to spaghetti sauce, and has all the taste complexity of V8 (maybe less). Seriously this was one of the worst house salsas I've had in Missouri--and I travel a lot. The one on the left is the spicy sauce they hide in the back, so the gringos won't hurt themselves. It's homemade with fresh onion, cilantro, tomatillo, etc. Delicious. Always ask for the "salsa picosa." As I expected, my Arroz con Pollo came out in about 4 minutes, and was good. Just grilled chicken breast with rice and queso sauce, but the chicken was tender and tasted fresh. Based on the taste of the food, service, and the (good) salsa, this place definitely deserves a solid 4 stars. read more
