Warm welcome as we came in the door and were sat down immediately. The server was helpful made himself available. The restaurant had a great collection of custom art and decor all around that feed into the modern Mexican ambience of the facility. My beautiful date ordered the carne asada tacos on the corn tortillas. The food was well seasoned and dressed in freshly sautéed peppers and onions. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with Tapatio's red sauce that was accompanied with a gracious side of refried beans and Spanish rice. The enchiladas were good, and overtly topped with layers and layers of cheese (too much for my liking... but to each their own). Complimentary chips and salsa were served with the meal. Man I would give this place 20 stars if I could. My parents are moving to Maine and tasked me to find a Mexican restaurant. I yelped and found El Pocho's and saw the amount of positive reviews and they deserve every star!! The father & daughter were running the place when we arrived. It's a small diner, next to a gas station, and we were immediately greeted warmly by the owner's daughter. Sat us down, took our order, and had a pleasant conversation as we waited for our food. Speaking of food, wow! I ordered the tacos and they were priced well and super generous portions. My mom asked for a to go menu and they ran out, but the daughter just gave my mom a regular menu to take. Super kind! I will look forward to eating here again when I visit my parents!! read more

I love this place! I'm so happy that they have a full service restaurant now. The food is great, the servers seem really happy to be out of the tiny space next to the gas station, and it's the same great food. I've had taco salads, enchiladas, tacos and chimis and I've liked them all. They use cilantro more than a run of the mill Mexican restaurant and I love them for it! This is some of the best Mexican food I've ever had ! I've moved around plenty and spent a few years in California, where there is an abundance of Mexican food. This is easily up there as far as Mexican food goes. This restaurant can be tricky to find if you don't know what you're looking for. It is attached to the mini-mart for the Coast to Coast gas station on the corner. Inside it's relatively small, it can probably house 10 people max. It's equipped with stools on the counter, bar style. It can get busy during peak lunch hours. The food itself is fantastic. They provide a lot with each order too, especially the nachos. SO happy to finally find a restaurant that serves good Mexican food in this area! My husband and I are from Texas and we really miss it. The beans and rice are very good. Their street tacos are so good, too. I'm not crazy about the chips, they might be better if they were warmed, but the salsa is good. An outside area to eat on nice days is a plus too! I was rather surprised how high this place has been rated. We took out beef nachos and pork belly tacos (special of the day). Both nachos and tacos were greasy and soggy, the pork belly was bone dry, and we suspected the beef on nachos was from a can. The flavoring was overall bland and lacked freshness. I have had many good meals at the former gas station El Pocho's, but although the new location is nice, I felt the food quality has slipped a bit. They used to have great homemade salsa and now it's just pico de gallo with no heat. We ordered the $18 margaritas which were very watered down. There was only one waiter for the whole dining area and he was stretched thin, so needless to say our food came out luke warm. OMG!!! this place is amazing. True, authentic Mexican food. The best tacos I've ever had. Don't be fooled by the location. The service is excellent. People are very friendly. We went on a Thursday at 12:30 and it was quite busy. A lot of people phoning orders, but we placed an order at the counter and sat at the countertop and was able to eat there. Well, how about the kind of humble a restaurant an only obtain from being located as part of a gas station kind of humble. A simple sign only let's people know that Mexican food awaits, but the sign does not give an indication of how good the Mexican food is here. The inside is perhaps even more humble. Though brightly painted, you can't help but notice that this place might have been used for storage for the gas station. Not all of the power source gangboxes are recessed into the wall, the place is small and somewhat cramped (who am I kidding? It is definitely cramped) and overall, this is not the kind of place where the ambiance will wow you. But the food will definitely wow you and leave within your soul a serenade that truly great food can leave you with. I would recommend getting your order Togo. As I said, the place is small. The staff are great and it is obvious they love what they do and are extremely proud of their product. The carne asada burrito was very good and fairly priced at about ten dollars. Honestly, not a bad price point. I would definitely recommend a visit here. Don't be put off by the location. Remember that old adage about the best Mexican food comes from the worse neighborhoods. I can't believe I forgot to finish this post.. so here I go again; trying to remember details of the very first visit to El Pocho's. First of all- I've spent 10 years living in the Southeast.. so when I hear about a restaurant in a gas station, I know it's about to be legit. Some of the best food comes from gas stations, don't ask me why- I just know what I know. Second- it's AUTHENTIC Mexican. (Sorry guys; Margarita's isn't it.) Third- the staff is super friendly Fourth and most importantly: THE FOOOOOOD!!! They have a small menu; which means they nail everything they do. They have homemade salsa and tortilla chips. When you get your first plate at an authentic Mexican joint you're like "erm, what's this?" but again, if you know you know.. (that's the good stuff) We've had the baby chimis, quesadilla, nachos, and both chicken + carne asada burritos.. oh, and of course chips and salsa. Soooo gooooood. We have searched high and low for "authentic Mexican cuisine" in the state of Maine. After a 2 year search, it culminated in a TINY "hole in the wall" location right next to the gas station. The people are cheerful. There is only a bar counter for seating but no alcohol is served. Food orders taken promptly and everything was packed to go per request. I've driven by El Pocho's many times but the hours they're open just never worked for me. Saturday night, we decided to finally get some take out, as we've heard nothing but amazing things. Maybe I just don't know what "authentic" Mexican is... but we certainly didn't get what we were expecting. We didn't place our order ahead of time which was a mistake because we stood around waiting for quite some time- someone came in and ordered food well after we did and they got theirs within minutes. If we ever go back, at least we already know what we like since we ordered enough food for an army! Hard shell beef tacos- We both really enjoyed these, but I would still describe them as just "the best tasting Taco Bell taco I've ever had" so I'm not sure that's saying too much. I believe the hard shells are made in house and I have to say, they were great. Flour tortilla chicken tacos- So, so disappointing. While the portion was plentiful, the chicken had no flavor and was so dry it was comparable to saw dust. We ended up not even eating these. Chicken enchiladas- Again, tasteless chicken dust with half red sauce, half green. The green sauce didn't really taste like anything, but the red sauce was pretty good. I always thought enchiladas were covered in cheese and sauce, but the sauce was just crusted right onto it. Pork empanadas- The filling was spicy and very tasty, but the dough seemed to get soggy. Maybe they just don't "to-go" well. The sides you get are refried beans and rice (honestly, both very good) and the tacos also come with a tiny bag of tortilla chips and a small side of homemade salsa. The chips had no salt on them, and the salsa was mostly watery corn. I feel like I'm being so harsh, because the people who were making the food were incredibly kind and you could tell they loved what they were doing.
