My husband and I ate here when agave newly opened and the food was really good. My go to order was always a stake agave which initially was very good fast-forward to Cinco de Mayo evening we ordered a DoorDash delivery and I ordered steak agave again. This was the most disappointing meal I've ever had there. I'm not sure how they could've called it a ribeye steak. It was a piece of meat that was about a quarter inch thick in small pieces like a puzzle and it was gray. I don't know if it was grilled it didn't even taste like steak. We also ordered chips and salsa and the salsa they sent. I don't know what it was, but it didn't taste anything like salsa and we had to throw it out. The guacamole they included was maybe 2 teaspoons if that and I'm being generous, my husband said his meal was the worst he'd ever gotten from there and we would never order from there again. read more

The chicken tacos were even more horrible - filling was discusting and they were placed on a bed of tacos, which became soggy and inedible. The other person's margarita tasted as if there were no tequila in it. Bartender provided anther shot to make it OK. Service was fine. The drinks and food warrant these complaints. read more

Trying this place for the first time and it was everything I hoped it would be! Augusta NEEDED an authentic Mexican family-style place and El Agave delivers. My daughter and I made the "choose your own combo." We we're both excited to see pork tamales on the menu. She matched hers with a crunchy taco and I paired mine with a shredded beef burrito. The place was hopping and I was worried the food would take a long time. Nope. The food came out hot, fresh and fast. Accompanied by creamy, perfectly spiced refried beans topped with gooey melted cheese, I could eat my weight in the beans alone. The tamale was moist, filled with tender seasoned pork covered in the perfect red sauce, it was everything my tastebuds wanted! I could go on forever about the shredded beef burrito. The meat was melt in your mouth tender, seasoned to perfection. The portion was just the right size for me. My daughter wolfed down her taco in three bites practically! She loved it! The meal started off with complimentary chips and homemade salsa. The salsa was tomatoey, garlicky, not too spicy and served chilled on the side with individual dipping bowls. The chips were warm, crispy, and salted. We had to pace ourselves so we saved room for our dinner. The restaurant itself is in a former chain establishment but you'd never know it by the warm decor, fun atmosphere and fast friendly service. Maine's Capitol city needed a place like this. My husband and I stopped in to the new Mexican restaurant today. They fixed the Ruby Tuesday's up beautiful and we were immediately greeted and taken to a wonderful table for our dinner. My family had a fabulous experience here! Each of us enjoyed our meals quite a bit (and we tend to have different preferences from each other so that's a big win). Our server was polite and gave great recommendations, the atmosphere was relaxed with quiet Mexican music playing, the restrooms and rest of the restaurant was clean, and our food arrived very quickly. The free chips and salsa were great! The Dinner Special was a big hit, had a large portion especially for the price, and was a great way to try lots of things. The Burritos Mexicanos was also great! This place was hopping on a Sat. night - were quoted a 30 min. wait, but we're seated in about 20-25 min. They text you when your table is ready, so you can wait outside or in your car. Staff were all very friendly and reasonably attentive - I.e. they didn't bug you every 3 min. to check on you, but checked in a few times, and were easy to flag down when I forgot to ask for hot sauce :) Generous w/the free chips and flavorful salsa. The cheese dip was delicious! Their Spanish rice - yummy! I ordered the enchiladas Popeyes - it was bursting with so much authentic flavor! (I've had Mexican food from Cozumel, Costa Maya, a hole in the wall in Tijuana, San Diego, FL... El Agave's is legit!) The tortilla's are not some store bought "Mission" crap - they are freshly made from scratch! Hubby ordered the El Agave Burrito w/shrimp - he raved at how good it was, I had a bite - yea, awesome!! This place is brand new. It just opened this week and the timing couldn't be better because I've been craving tamales for weeks. Normally new restaurants can be a bit chaotic but they clearly know what they're doing. They're organized and quick. It was the height of lunch on a Saturday, and the place is packed, but we only waited maybe 10 minutes for our entrees! Quick service! Everything was incredible. I ordered the build-your-own combo with a pork tamale and a beef taco. It was delicious! So much flavor packed into that plate. My bf ordered the lunch quesadilla. I've literally never seen him eat retried beans or rice when we go to a Mexican restaurant but he completely cleaned his plate. He normally wastes them completely but he finished his and half of mine too lol.. The house Margarita is really good, strong and not too sweet. I'll definitely be back and I can't wait. read more

Finally a Mexican joint a step above Margaritas for food! This is one from a small local chain (Bangor, Brewer and N Conway, NH). We really liked the plates we ordered, molcajete and a burrito. Both huge portions! Service was efficient and friendly except for forgetting water order. The drinks were a bit weak and margaritas tasted like a premix. I try to support mom & pop businesses whenever possible. I was so excited to hear about this family owned restaurant. The chips and salsa were complimentary and the chips were nice and warm. I had a burrito agaves with chicken and it was huge! I didn't realize that it came with cheese sauce on top as opposed to melted cheese. That was my fault so I just scraped it off because it was not to my liking. The burrito itself was tasty. My fiancé enjoyed his fajitas. We went there a week or so ago with fairly high expectations. Extremely disappointed! To start, the language barrier was apparent. The hostess was clearly out of her element, and she was very unhappy about being in her position. She should be more careful about expressing her opinion to a coworker in her native language when there might be customers that can understand at least enough to get the point. Next was the food. I got the burrito especial.. it was especial alright... I ordered it with chorizo rather than chicken or beef for added flavor. It came with Mexican ( Spanish) rice and refried beans. First, the burrito. I couldn't tell if it was ground beef or chorizo. Tasteless... No spice to it at all... Totally bland. Next the rice. While it looked pretty and nicely colorful, that's where it ended. Again, it was bland and quite tasteless. Last was the refried beans. They were the worst of all if you can imagine that. They were soupy, thin, and a total puree, lacking any bean texture of any sort. No flavor at all. Quite possibly the worst meal or I've ever had. This is not the end of the troubles. When we got our bill, we had it split between the 2 of us, my portion was about $7.55. when I received my bill it was for $35.89. I was billed for another table altogether. Again not the worst part. There was nobody there that could reverse the charge and bill it correctly. Only the manager has that ability I guess, and it was his day off. They offered to reimburse me the difference in cash, but that doesn't take care of the wrong ticket being cashed out. Finally after about a 45 minute wait, the charges were reversed and was rebilled got the correct amount. Not even an expression of us there anything we can do to make this right? Or let us take care of this for you for your inconvenience. Long story short, we will NEVER go back. Very possibly the worst experience we've ever had. read more

I do not recommend this restaurant. My fiancé and I went in for a late lunch a few days ago when it was not so busy. The hostess seated us and gave us menus. We sat there for 15 minutes, watching a waiter go back and forth taking care of two other tables on either side of us. After watching him return to the kitchen area, we decided that we'd waited long enough to just be ignored. We got up from our seats and headed for the entrance. On our way out, the hostess said " Have a nice afternoon!" We' ll never go back after this lack of service.This site won't let me leave 0 stars, but that's what I give it. read more

El Agave's Mexican Restaurant had their soft opening in Augusta, Maine last week. This is their third restaurant in Maine. El Agave's is located in the Marketplace at Augusta (where Ruby Tuesday's used to be). We've eaten here four times already. The restaurant is clean, the service is friendly and the food is awesome. A lot of people are checking out this new Mexican restaurant and they aren't accepting reservations at this time, so expect a wait on Friday and Saturday nights. But once you get a table, you'll see that it's worth the wait. The Chili Rellenos are roasted, seeded, filled with cheese (you can also get meat, seafood, or veggies) and the salsa rojo is so flavorful that it borders on narcotic! Their Ribeye steak is prepared several different ways. We ordered the Steak Agave. It came with mushrooms, onions and grilled shrimp, garnished with Pico de Gallo, guacamole and sour cream. The rice is mildly seasoned and the frijoles are creamy and flavorful. The guacamole is made to order and goes great with the warm chips and cold cocktails. Being a Mexican foodie, I'm confident that El Agave's will be successful here in Augusta! read more

I can't understand how this place gets rave reviews and has remained in business. The food is a hot, sloppy mess. Mostly inedible and tasteless. Grilled chicken nachos are simply chewy chicken on tortilla chips and slathered with cheese sauce. The enchiladas are over cooked to the point of being too crunchy to eat. Wife and I tried El Agave's for the first time for dinner. Thursday nights are usually a good night to dine out in Augusta, in terms of being able to get seated fast. We were immediately greeted by a waiter with warm chips and fresh salsa. The staff was very attentive and kept drinks filled. We ordered guacamole as a starter and it was right up there with one of the best I've had. I dined on the Enchiladas Supremas, which was a huge portion of 4 various enchiladas topped with lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole and sour cream and served with rice. It was clear that all the ingredients were fresh and seemed homemade, nothing looked or tasted processed. My wife had the Quesadilla Fajita with chicken, peppers and onions and smothered with a queso sauce. It also came with lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream and served with rice. She can be a bit picky but really enjoyed the simplicity of the dish. Considering the large portions and service, the place is a bargain. Far more affordable for arguably better food than the "competition" across town in Margaritas (although competition may be too strong of a word). This restaurant is the clear winner! To start, two of our glasses were dirty. Not just dirty but dried food on and in them. When I mentioned it to the waitress, she acted like it was an inconvenience to get us new drinks.
