The ambience is ok. The food is not at all what is expected from a Mexican restaurant. We ordered fajitas,enchiladas, burritos and tacos and all of them were bad. We just finished our dishes so that food is not wasted. They served the margarita is plastic glasses which was a major turn off. Our server was not able to understand what we were ordering and though it was not that crowded the order was taking a long time. It's a big no no from my side. read more

Waiter was in a bad mood and we were sat in a corner where no one could see us. Waited for over an hour for our food and would have to wait 15 minutes at least to track a waiter down. And I'm pretty sure the waiter went into the men's restroom to vape with his friends while he was working. Food was also bad. Do not recommend. read more

Awful service. Still here and waited 15 minutes before the server asked us what we wanted to drink and what we wanted to order. Then waited another 10 minutes for chips and salsa. We asked for waters and we never received them. She came with our drinks which were suppose to be a blended strawberry margarita and then a regular margarita on the rocks. Their lunch specials are reasonably priced. The service was great and the food was pretty good. I ordered the chicken fajitas lunch special and a lemonade. The fajitas came with rice, beans, guac, sour cream, salsa, and 4 small tortillas. The chicken fajita portion was large enough to share. The total bill was under $10. Quality was excellent but recipes were unconventional. For instance, the Baja style tacos did not include the traditional limey Baja sauce -- and had bacon. Weird! The beans tasted strange, not good to me either. I'm from California so used to a certain standard of more authentic Mexican food. Service was just ok too. This is my first ever review but I feel the need to made a comment on this restaurant. I would avoid this restaurant like the plague. The front end staff was very unimpressive. Only saw our server 3 times throughout out dinner. Very poor service. I would actually fire this employee on the spot due to her lack of attention to detail and service. Had to ask for more napkins. I would actually mention her name but she never introduced her self to us. The back end staff was ok. The cheese sauce seemed watered down and had no flavor. My wife had the taco and enchilada plate. The taco was very good but the enchilada sauce tasted like spaghetti os with a little kick to it. I had the el pastor burrito which was very good. The margarita was fine for commercial margaritas. If I had to do this all over again I would give this a hard pass. Gate 25 down the street or Leadbelly's across the street looked like a much better choice. When we arrived at El Potrero at 5:30, it appeared to be a quiet place. One other table was occupied. The tortilla chips did not appear to be house-made which is a downer for a Mexican restaurant, but our dinners were 3 star. There's a lot of yelp reviews complaining about the service, but we were very happy with our waiter this weekend. Quick service, refills, and attentive. Food was very typical midwestern Mexican fare. I had Rancheros Enchiladas which was ok, and wife had taco and enchilada combo, which she said was standard. Margaritas were well made, and well priced during happy hour. Wide selection but I stuck with the strawberry. Prices were appropriate and location can't be beat. read more

Decent food, apathetic (borderline resentful) service. I think I've visited four times---always for lunch---and not once have I been greeted promptly by a host. That's literally Job One in setting the tone for the whole experience, and they fail. The last time I went in after calling in an order to go and stood at the host station for a good minute with no one in sight (it was just after they'd opened for the day so I assumed they were still busy getting set up, which of course they should not be). Eventually I see a woman headed my way from back of the place. She greets me with a half-hearted "Can I help you?". I tell her I called in an order and gave her my name (not that I thought she'd need it). She turns and walks away without a word. So I'm standing there thinking "What is even happening right now?" for a couple of minutes when I see her coming back with a to-go bag. We complete the transaction with hardly a word spoken and I leave. She did (barely) manage to thank me. When I have sat down to eat (two of the four visits, I think?) it hasn't been terrible service, but just really apathetic. And I'm a guy that doesn't WANT over-the-top fake enthusiasm/friendliness or excessive attention, but just professional, reasonably polite, and with at least some sense of appreciation for the fact that I'm there. Whoever is the manager (if there is one?) should really consider some customer service training, because the staff clearly have no clue, or just don't care. I guess the best way to describe it is that I've almost felt like a bother to them. If you just really want some Mexican food El Potrero is fine, but I can't recommend it overall. I do wonder how they've made it this long, especially now that there are plenty of Mexican food options in Lincoln. I can only assume that they manage to capture enough of the workday crowd in and around the Haymarket, and runoff from arena events, Saltdogs games or whatnot. I really don't know how they'd survive without the benefit of the location. Or maybe they're part of a larger restaurant group that's propping them up? I don't know. Anyway, a big meh. I'd say give you money to people that are actually willing to earn it. read more

Service was so slow! Granted it was after a Husker football game so I was more patient but 2 hours AFTER the game? When we finally got seated there were at least 10 open tables, most needed cleaned off so that tells me they didn't staff for the event. The food had very little flavor and what it did have was not good nor did it look appetizing. The enchiladas had some kind of weird reddish brown sauce on them that tasted like it came from some off brand can of something. And if you wanted hot sauce it costs extra! Not my idea of Mexican food at all! I do hope somebody will open up a good Mexican restaurant down in the Haymarket...they'd make a killing since there isn't any competition! read more

Service was terrible. Waited 20 minutes before we could order drinks and then an additional 30 for food! The tables around us came in at least 10-15 minutes after us and had received their food before they even took our order. The waiter spilled water in my purse and didn't even acknowledge it, even though he watched it spill. The waiter handed us scalding hot plates with out warning us and then continued to pass them around, despite the obvious discomfort. He was wearing oven mitts. I ordered the lunch special number 11, which is a chicken quesadilla with rice and refried beans. The rice was undercooked and bland. The quesadilla was decent but boring. Needed tomatoes, guac, or sour cream. It was just queso and chicken inside a tortilla. I would not recommend eating here and I will not be returning. read more

If you like canned crushed tomatoes, you'll love the salsa, and chile colorado. Service was okay, beer was fairly cheap, but the food was horrible. Sauce for the chile colorado was canned tomatoes and hot sauce, which wasn't cooked very long, still tasted like the can. The meat in most decent restaurants would be fairly large chunks of beef, there's was grilled round steak (with plenty of gristle) that was just thrown into the sauce, not simmered in it as it should be and the menu claimed. There are a lot of places to eat in Haymarket, this won't be one I return to on the next trip to town. read more

My daughter and I love to eat at Mexican restaurants and we have pretty high standards for what is considered "good" El Potrero is "okay". The chips were warm and arrived well before the drinks, which was weird because eating them made us thirsty. The salsa was mediocre; I thought it was okay, my daughter didn't like it. Our server seemed either confused, unhappy, resentful, or a combination of all three. He kept backing away from us when we were ordering... what's up with that? Turns out he wanted nothing to do with us and we only saw him one other time when he actually brought refills for the completely dry/empty drinks. I had to get up and go inside to find someone to get our bill. The saving grace for the visit were the fajitas - they were good! I got chicken and my daughter got steak. We each had some of the other's and they were hot and tasty and the vegetables were nice. The patio is a lovely place to eat but this restaurant REALLY needs to address the problem with their service before they lose all of their customers. read more

I'm Mexican and I love this place! This place, along with its sister locations in GI, Kearney, and Omaha, are the only mexican restaurants my family will eat at. Margarita pitchers, $2 house tequila, and a great patio in the Haymarket. I always go with the tostaguac or chile relleno (both on the a la carte menu). Shrimp nachos are another favorite. Anything with that delicious white sauce on it is sure to please. Love this place, love all the cute Mexican boys working here, and will continue to spend birthdays, game days, and random week nights basking in the tradition that is EL POTRERO. Ole!! read more

Honestly, I came her with a friend to eat. The lady at the front slide the menus on the table when we said we wanted to sit outside. she was so rude. Not once acknowledged us. Then she walked around us several times and didn't serve us. She called over the African American gentleman to help. She also didn't serve another black family that was there either. She sat done every white family and made us find our own sitting. Never would I think that a restaurant has employees that act this way. It saddens me that it's still this way In 2021 we are still being treated like trash. read more

Horrible. The only good thing about this place is the salsa. I ordered a enchilada Jalisco. All it consisted of his ground hamburger and a soft shell. Absolutely no flavor added to the Hamburger. I got my 4 sauces in a container which I asked for. They didn't even put cheese on it. I took my left overs home and added my own cheese. I ended up tossing most of the left overs in the trash . I don't know if they had a new cook, or what. I won't be back. Unacceptable. Waste of money. read more

Awesome location but sub part food and neglectful service. My wife, daughter and I went last night to the location for dinner. The location is great but the interior is a bit shabby and could use some TLC. I had the enchiladas Jalisco, my daughter a kids quesadilla and fries, my wife a combination with an enchilada, fried burrito and gordita. I had a lime Margarita that was not bad. My wife had a gin and tonic what she said was okay. We had to ask for water because none were brought up front. My food was OK no complaints other than the amount of rice as a side dish with maybe two tablespoons full. Meal was certainly not worth the price. My wife's food was completely Stone Cold and the cheese inside her enchilada solidified. Her fried burrito, if you can call it that comma consisted of a tortilla covered in what look like rosa sauce. We waited for at least five minutes for our server take to pass by so we could tell him it needs to be reheated or remade better option. When he did not show up I left the table and went to the front and could not find him or any other person. There was maybe five tables full in the entire place. After being back at the table for a few minutes I went again to try to hunt somebody down and found our server in the bar talking to who I'm assuming was the owner (at very least he was the guy that sat us). I explained that we were waiting for him to come back but he never came back and that my wife's food arrived cold. He then took the plate and came back a few minutes later and said that they had put it back into the oven for a few minutes. This would be fine and all except that the gordita head lettuce on it and nobody wants baked lettuce on top of their food. My wife ate about half of each item and then gave up on it. When the server came back finally and asking if the food was okay now that it has been warmed my wife brought up that nobody wants bacon lettuce. The server was oblivious to that this had occurred and offered no apology. I would not eat here again and when I asked my wife this morning if she would ever go back she said no. Too many other good food options in the Haymarket to choose this one. For Mexican food I will stick with La Paz. Sometimes their staff is a little rude or not engaging but at least they're competent and they rectify situations quickly and you get larger portion sizes and better food. read more

Finally someone comes out, brings some chips. I ask for cheese dip, another five minutes or so. Let's just say you need a lot of time to eat here, with the slow service. read more
