My friend and I walked into El Rancho Grande about 30 minutes before closing on a Sunday evening after a long road trip. The host was pleasant and seated us right away (of course, there was only one other part in the entire restaurant!). The service was prompt, the food came out quickly and it was delicious! I had Juanito's carnitas and my friend had two enchiladas (chicken and shredded beef). Despite the late hour, we didn't feel rushed and left about 30 minutes after closing. Prices were ridiculously high for what you received. The tortilla chips were stale and had a chemical taste. I have never seen prices at Mexican restaurants this high and you received no rice or salad with your meal. They also were only taking cash. Servers was not very friendly or warm. Came here twice recently so I am doing an update to my review. The first time we came here the service was okay but the second time the person came around more maybe because it wasn't crowded. I think they changed the salsa from the last time I was there which was a while. It's chunky and flavorful and the chips were good. The food overall was good, the ground beef didn't have flavor but the chicken was seasoned well and tasty. First let me tell you who I went with: A recently retired health inspector who cant have anything with corn, is on a diet, and doesn't drink. A gluten-free/yeast free non drinker. My not picky husband. Me, a boujee Puerto Rican. Was the food authentic? Not really. Was it delicious? Absolutely. I got a cheesesteak burrito. My husband got fajitas. My mother in law (GF) got street tacos. My father in law got the burrito Colorado. Everyone was thoroughly satisfied. My father in law was extremely pleased with the cleanliness of the restaurant. Misleading advertising, 28 bucks for a lobster fajita. The lobster is fake and contains gluten which is a common allergen. Company was net clear on the website and did not offer any attempt to address the issue. This is what a 28 dollar dish from them looks like. This is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants. It's pretty traditional, classic Mexican with your enchiladas, fajitas, queso dip, etc. But there are a few things that I think set El Rancho apart from other Mexican restaurants... 1) The decor. When you walk in, the place is clean and really nicely decorated, complete with a fireplace in the entrance. It's really a great atmosphere and they do an excellent job of keeping it clean and tasteful. The bar area looks really cool too. The restrooms are modern and regularly maintained. 2) The servers are all Hispanic and aim to please. If they make a mistake in the ordering process, they always take care of it quickly - very quickly. Not that I'm saying they make mistakes, but it happens. 3) The arrives fresh and hot. Always. We have never been served a cold dish in this place. Everything arrives piping hot and it is consistent - it always tastes the same. Unlike some other Mexican restaurants, the refried beans are not crazy salty. I order Fajitas Tejanas often and when I do, I order the with light oil (which I highly recommend). They're way less greasy this way and you don't end up feeling heavy after eating them. 4) They have healthy options on the menu. One of my all time favorite dishes is the chicken soup. Lately, I've been ordering it every time I visit (see the photo I posted). It's a GIANT bowl of clear broth chicken soup loaded with plenty of chicken and vegetables and slices of avocado. There is so much soup that I usually take home half of it for later. I also get it without rice since that's simply how I prefer it. It's so healthy that I feel like it offsets some of the chips/queso I tend to indulge in. 5) If you're on a budget, you can always find a coupon in the local Reach Magazine or Westsider Coupon books. They always have coupons and if you're on Facebook, you can follow them via Facebook Messenger and get added to an email list that has even better coupons and discounts. Honestly, this is simply our "go to" Mexican restaurant and we always run into friends here. We rarely have to wait for a seat because they have plenty of seating areas (main dining hall, a second overflow dining area, and the bar that can accommodate large groups. Very bad language barriers between the staff... we had to ask for things 3-4 times before they understood what were were requesting (We asked for a pitcher of margaritas and carry out utensils and got met with blank stares by several waiters-- and they asked us to "point" at things on the menu). The food was abysmal. Very bland and I couldn't make out where most of the "vegetables" were in my dish. Once our margaritas came out, they gave us coffee STIRRERS to sip them with, not actual straws. We also ordered "appetizers" (jalapeño poppers and mozzarella sticks) which were BURNED and served with some watery sauce that tasted like bbq (very strange). I'm the Mexican food fan of our family, so I usually convince my husband to accompany me regularly. Despite his initial protests, he usually leaves satisfied and we both end the day happy. Not this time. We were both disappointed. We ordered a raspberry margarita to start with - it was Friday evening, and I was ready to kick-off the weekend. It was so weak, we ended up asking for extra alcohol. I hadn't ordered a raspberry slushy, after all. We followed that with a lime margarita, and that one did seem a little better balanced from the get-go. I ordered #2 on the Vegetarian Menu: Burrito with Mashed Potatoes, a Cheese Quesadilla, and Guacamole Salad. The burrito was decidedly unappetizing, and my cheese quesadilla was far more tortilla than cheese. Half the cheese was missing. The salad just consisted of iceberg lettuce, tomato, and some guacamole, and it was watery and limp. WE were cheated for an issue El Rancho Grande had with DoorDash! I read the DoorDash merchant agreement. This was a quick trip to the bar (just a drink). I was able to self seat since I was going over there, it was around 7 o'clock and there was no one there. I was a little confused on who was my bartender since I was about three people back there but no one really making drinks. Eventually someone came out made our drinks and then set it in the corner. Another girl came out ,handed us the drinks, and said she didn't know why he didn't just hand it to us. I immediately paid since that's all I knew what I wanted but no one came back out to check on us after that. The drinks were good but the service was a little iffy. read more

My wife and i love El Rancho Grande. We know a couple of servers by name. Its super clean. We come a lot for happy hour. In my opinion, they have the best margarita in town and the beer is served ice cold and perfect. I always get the #6 beef but my wife likes to shake it up. We come for friends birthdays too. First dining indoor experience since the quarantine...on the road with my softball team in Cincinnati,..we had a large group, 20+ people..Started off by ordering a jumbo Margarita..yes, it was yummy and perfect to start my meal...next came the chips and salsa, overall good, smooth salsa, like you see in most mexican joints, plenty of chips, hot...good service by waitress by keeping our chips and salsa full the entire dinner...our table ordered a cheese sauce, that sucker was gone in minutes! For dinner I ordered the fiesta burrito...which is an oversize burrito, chock full of rice, black beans, shredded beef (not hamburger meat), scrambled egg, pico de gallo and of course i used the house salsa on top...with a little lettuce and sour cream...nice presentation, tasty dish that i would recommend if you are at El Rancho Grande, saw a few other orders at our table, the Chicken Tortilla Soup was huge, lumps of shredded chicken veggies and tortilla strips, garnished with avocado and sour cream...huge bowl, probably could do the soup with salsa and chips and be good...saw a chicken fajita plate, that also looked pretty yummy as it was steaming by me and placed on our table...can't tell you how enjoyable it was to sit down with friends, have a couple drinks and interact...been months...and my experience at El Rancho Grande was a good one, get out folks and enjoy your local places..they need us more than ever!! enjoy.. read more

Yet another Mexican place that fell short of expectations, especially in terms of service. Our server was one of the most unfriendly people I have ever encountered in a restaurant. Everyone has bad days, but come on! He walked around with a permanent frown pasted on his face and moved at a pace slower than slow. The chips and salsa were good, my enchiladas rancheras were okay, but not memorable. My friend seemed to enjoy her quesadilla. But for the lousy service and food-tweaking, the place has potential. This was a pleasant surprise. My wife and I had reason to be out on the far West Side which isn't an area where we spend much time. It was time for lunch. We were looking for someplace that wasn't a chain or fast-food, and we stumbled on El Rancho Grande. I had the Fiesta Burrito, which is a nicely-spiced large burrito stuffed with shredded beef, black beans, and scrambled egg. It's topped with lettuce, sour cream and pico de gallo. I'll admit it was the egg that caught my eye, and it was really good. I also really enjoyed the shredded beef. Lots of flavor, but not overly salty (which often happens). We had good, rapid service for lunch. It's not an expensive place. Many lunch specials under are in the $7 range. There is one unfortunate typo on the menu. Instead of "Huevos con Chorizo" they list "Heaves con Chorizo." I didn't have the huevos to order that ... I'm giving it a 3-star rating now but only because we've only eaten there once. We'll have reason to be out there in a couple of weeks and I want to try it again and have something else. There are too many good places to eat somewhere you know you won't like a second time, so consider the fact that I want to go back a positive review in and of itself. We have been long time customers of El Rancho Grande on Harrison. Since the pandemic began we've been trying to support this and other local businesses by ordering carry-out. El Rancho Grande has several menu items that are fantastic, including the Veggie Fajitas, the Margarita Chicken and the Chicken & Rice Bowl (in addition to all the classic Mexican Restaurant combos and favorites). It's tough to find a dish they don't do well. Service was always good, and we never had an issue... ...until now. Placed a carry-out order two weekends ago like we always do. Picked up the $36 order and got home to discover the only dinner of the three that was actually made correctly was the Veggie Fajitas. The Margarita Chicken was missing all of the sides/extras, so it was just a grilled chicken breast in a to-go container. The third meal was completely wrong, like literally the exact opposite of what we ordered, chicken in the taco and enchilada instead of beef, rice instead of beans, nothing like what was on the online order summary. It was like the kitchen simply didn't bother to even read the order details. That alone wouldn't be cause for a 1-star review, after all, people make mistakes, and restaurants are even more hectic than usual during these difficult times. However I sent both an email and an online message via El Rancho Grande's website in the past two weeks detailing what happened and asking them to make it right. I got ZERO response. They simply don't care that I spent $36 for three meals and got one complete and edible meal. As I said, we were long time customers, but we will not be back. If you can't be bothered to respond to a customer after two weeks and multiple communications, we can't be bothered to continue being customers. read more

I ordered a sangria and a chicken and shrimp quesadilla; I had a taste for some cilantro. I was given a quesadilla without any extras (sour cream, salsa, etc) and when I asked for it I was told that it would be extra! Really??? Best part about chains like this- Margaritas!...happy hour margaritas. Unfortunately, my favorite Mexican grocers, butcher shops and food trucks can not offer this. Biggest let down- No Horchata! WTF? The biggest difference I've noticed after going here is that the brick and mortar spots serve refried beans. I'm not a fan and its really just a plate filler. Outside of that my food was decent but I prefer the taquerias and trucks over places like this. Its always fresher on "soft" shell corn tortillas vs. the "Hard" shells at this spot. They did honor the $6 Yelp check in offer which was great. As far as these places go it was pretty stereotypical in décor and menu but it has been a long time since I've stepped in and I really enjoyed the service and the margaritas. I stopped here to treat my friend to a birthday lunch. I actually opted for this over Chipotle because it was more authentic Mexican food, but I at least know that Chipotle puts out a quality product every time. I tried the Hanger Steak which was really overcooked and dry. I also got and enchilada which actually wasn't that bad. Back again for some more Mexican food on the west side. El Rancho Grande has a good menu. You'll find your typical Americanized Mexican restaurant items like the speedy Gonzalez and your combination items, but you also find some dishes you can't find anywhere else. Generally I like to eat at this location in nicer months of the year due to the outside patio area. My favorite meal here is the El Pollo Loco which is a mixture of vegetables, chicken, and cheese served with Mexican rice or beans and tortillas on the side. It's basically a twist on fajitas, but I find it to be a really good (maybe not for you) alternative. The margaritas here are good, but a bit expensive if you aren't here during happy hour (4-7 daily). They aren't as strong as Cancun's margaritas, but they taste very good. I like to order the regular frozen variety so your experience might differ from mine. Service is usually great at this location and on this occasion was no different. The meals were out quickly and we had a fun family dinner. Something I thought was nice on this visit was that we brought a cake in for my dad's birthday and they kept it in the refrigerator for us while we ate dinner. They then brought it out after we finished. I'm not sure that would happen at a lot of restaurant's especially ones offering desserts. read more

Consistently good. VERY fast, your food will usually be out within 10 minutes of ordering so we usually have a margarita before we order. I went here a lot. Every time I get the same thing every time it's $12. Today I ordered it and it was $18 and some change. I asked them and they said it's because I got cheese on top of my enchiladas. I always get the cheese but none the less am I supposed to believe cheese on top of enchiladas is $6?? Ridiculous. I will never be back. Went back after 6 months. Our table took advantage of discounted margarita during happy hour and while they were a tasty, they were typical chain restaurant margaritas- ya know, a little watered down and not super strong. My brother has been trying to convince us to switch to this Mexican restaurant from our beloved Cancun for some time now. After a lunch with the family on a slower Saturday afternoon, I have to say that won't be happening. It was a clean and tidy restaurant. Can't go wrong there. The service was slow and we only had a check in once while we are our food. Was surprised since the restaurant was rather empty and we were the only large party in the dining room. This was also the time we received our check. The food wasn't very impressive. I was left with a lot desired in flavor. Most dishes had cheese sprinkled or melted on them. I know you can get it without but it would be nice to see a dish made without that being a focus. The prices were higher than I expected for lunch also. Afterwards the kiddos and I agree that we will stick with our favorite Mexican joint that is Cancun! read more

After many, many trips here I know what I like... 1. Their chips and salsa are fantastic! Add some of the spicy sauce at the table if you like a kick 2. Their chicken fajitas- My husband and I are able to share one and both end up full! Looking to save some calories, skip the tortillas, rice, and ask them to cook it without oil. 3. The pitchers of Margaritas- They come in many flavors and I haven't found one I like best, but I keep trying. Go there for happy hour from 3-6pm any day of the week! All drinks are on special, even pitchers! Yes, this is a chain. And yes, it may not be the most authentic. But, it is close to home and the food is good. Decor is standard tacky Mexican restaurant. Service is always super speedy! The food always comes out burn-you-mouth hot. There are many coupons out there, so look for them and save a couple bucks.
