Haven't been here in. While en the food was good like the last time today we had the panchos Mazatlán and the Mexican plate. The Mexican plate had 2 cheese enchiladas a side of rice and beans and some guacamole everything on the plate was good except the rice felt as if it had been fried due to its crunchy texture and the panchos Mazatlán seemed to have been left. The fajita tacos were delicious the first time I went there for lunch. I went again thinking I would get the same. The fajitas were reheated and not tender like the first time. The rice and beans and salsa are good. Don't order crispy tacos if you want boxed fried taco shells. Enchiladas were just blah. The sauce needs a bit of a kick like more chili powder or spices. We had just got out of church, and you know how that is. The place was packed. Not a lot of parking. The place is has plenty of seating. Nothing outdoor, thanks be to God, cause it gets hot in McCallen. They had a check in folder at the counter. The person behind the counter only took call in orders. The host was seating people and always looking for a table that needed to be cleaned for the next round of customers. Our waitress was prompt. At first, she made sure the ladies at the front of the table were taken care of. I was treated like a leper, lol. Only got one drink and was never tend to again. I kinda made my own plate. Chicken fried chicken with queso and pico de gallo, rice and beans. I have this plate at another restaurant which is really good. They chicken fried chicken was dry, the queso was not too bad, they melted the cheese on there like they do for enchiladas. Then I just added the pico de gallo. My wife had the beef enchiladas. She always gets the better plate. Her plate came with three stuffed beef enchiladas, rice and beans. She tore it up. We came from Houston to the basilica de San Juan. We were all starving and glad we chose El Rancho -Everything was delicious, it was our party if 7 and a baby and the Pancis, queso fundido, carne guisada,mole, enchiladas all delicious. The only thing that might bother someone is if you don't care for very very dim lighting then this place is not for you. The food isn't terrible...but it's not amazing either. We went on a Sunday and it was pretty full. The chips they brought out were okay...they felt more store bought than home made. Plus we were given a cheese sauce rather than salsa for the chips...the cheese sauce was a little watery, it didn't feel like real cheese they had just melted. They also didn't have any real salsa...it was pico de gallo without any heat...just felt like you were eating tomato. I had the ribeye tampiqueña plate...and again, the food was okay. The one thing that I didn't expect were the enchiladas being filled with queso fresco....since the queso fresco is served cold, it felt like I was eating cold enchiladas. But maybe that's more on me for not reading it was filled with queso fresco rather than say mozzarella. The place was extremely full so service was decent as well. The waitress would come by but we had to usually flag her down. I did notice the table next to us weren't happy and they left and overheard them say they were never coming back again because of the service. So far this restaurant is proving to be very delicious! The service is on point!! I'm not even halfway through my drink and I got a refill with extra ice! Loving this atmosphere! OK so got finished with the food... And it was very delicious! The enchilada Suiza's as per my friend she says they tasted really good! My plate was also very delicious the flavors were very well balanced nothing was too salty and nothing was under flavor. My Friend's Daughter had a burger, and she almost ate the whole thing!!! The establishment is very clean, shout out to the Cleaning staff. Friendly greeting staff! We truly enjoyed this experience! Although it was a Sunday after church and parking was lacking, our party of five was seated within about fifteen minutes. Our server was at the table almost immediately for our drink order and was super attentive throughout the meal. And this place was packed! He took our food order without writing anything down which concerned us, but the order came out perfect, just as we ordered it. And was the food good? You bet! The fajitas were tender and the beef ribs cooked to perfection and flavorful. The portions were huge, if you leave hungry it's your fault. This has got to be one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Valley. Down side, parking is a hassle because of the small lot. And it is noisy. The cashier and manager dismissed you when your waiting. Does not care if people walk out, We waited over an hour and a half for a to go order, people we just ignoring your presence. Don't bother calling in your order because the phone will ring and ring so we had to order in front of cashier. One guy ordered to go from his table and it wasn't ready after he finished his meal there. He waited with us. That same guy asked the manager why isn't my order ready by now. The manager looked at him dead in the face and shrugged his shoulders. We will no longer visit this restaurant. The owner better take criticism for change. Been to this restaurant 4 times. The first 3 visits were great. Food excellent Tex-mex, plus some authentic Mexican fare. The last time, 2 nights ago, was a real disappointment. Food was blah. No taste at all. My poblano was stuffed with a good portion of ground beef as expected but no seasoning at all. Good amount of cheese but the pepper seemed over cooked. I get invited to eat at El Rancho Grande several times a year. I've not had a bad meal here yet. This is a very typical valley Mexican restaurant, with all the usual suspects on the menu. The service is usually quick and efficient. The prices are good too. This spot is usually full at lunch and you are likely to encounter border patrol agents and police officers having their lunch here. This is a solid place to have a traditional valley meal at a good price, comfort food. Don't expect anything unexpected. read more

Wanted to try a fajita Botana for 4 from a different place so we randomly choose this place. Need to say I drove from Edinburg to San Juan to try this new place as a carry out. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED in what I received when I got home and opened up the bag. We called the restaurant from home in Edinburg and told them what we received. We literally thought we received a botana for 2 due to how small the plate was, and Venice me it was very small for a botana for 4. I Explained what was in the bag she said you did get one for 2 for us to go back. Here we go back to SJ from Edinburg and when we get there they say it's the one for 4. Why did they tell us over the phone it was not and make us go back to exchange? Everywhere I've gone serves a full plate of chips with beans and queso, not here. A beautiful new building. Looks great. I have not eaten here in years as the old placed was run down and just didn't look that clean. This new location is five stars. Very nice. Chips are not homemade. Ok. I order the chicken Rancho that came in a bowl and it was soup like. Everything was average. My husband ordered the enchiladas and said they were fine. We got to the place at 1115. Waited 10 minutes to be seated. Then waited about 4-5 minutes to get a server. She took our drink orders and came back at 1133 and said, "oh, by the way breakfast is only served until 1130, I'll be back to take your order." The nachos and cheese are extra after they give you the first complimentary one which seemed ridiculous because the nachos were poor quality, the cheese was average and the salsa was tasteless. We then realized that there was no breakfast after 11:30, and we decided to leave but the waitress scolded us because we refused to pay for an untouched lemonade. According to her, there are cameras in the restaurant and for that single time, she'd let it slide. Usually she would be forced to charge us for the lemonade we didn't drink and the chips we barely touched. This place was recommended by one of my friends that said it was great. Coming into the restaurant you can see it's a little upscale, with a nice atmosphere. I ordered what I always order for breakfast which is a simple egg and beans, with flour tortillas. Now, it was good don't get me wrong, it's just wasn't great. This place is a Rio Grande Valley staple, a landmark, a Mecca if you will! A few of my co-workers ferried me to this place and did so in a pseudo secret fashion. For every question I had in terms of where we were going, I got no solid answers. When we finally arrived at this non-descript looking restaurant, the parking lot was telling me that there might be something to this place. As I entered, I noticed that the place was packed (another good sign from the restaurant gods). After being seated, the owner was pointed out to me and I noticed that she genuinely enjoyed each and every interaction she was having with the customers. It appeared as though she knew everyone in the place. When she came to our table, I felt no less special than any of the other customers she had spoken with previous to me. I ordered the beef Guisada that the valley is so famous for and was not disappointed in the least.
