The waiter was polite and somewhat attentive until the end of our visit. The drinks were a great price during happy hour. We arrived late in the evening due to work and had about 45 minutes to order and eat. The staff was kind enough to serve us efficiently and made suggestions to help us choose the right meal. The quesadilla was out of this world and my parents get the botana every time they come. Portions are big enough to take home a full meal for the following day. And I cannot say enough good things about the salsa! My only complaint is that the dining room is freezing, so bring a coat. read more

Food is great when it's right, service is good as well but some waiters do rush you, the environment is nice, comfy. When you order it's a hot and miss, waiter sends correct order and kitchen messes it up, it happened. Everytime I go. When order to pick up, order is taken but kitchen does their own thing has stuff missing, etc so if you call they try to make it like it's your fault not there's. This place was recommended by a coworker who lives in the area. Experience was between a 3 and a 4 for me. I was charged 2 different prices for the same drink. Drinks were only ok. Lots of sugary mixer. Chips and 3 kinds of salsa were brought to the table. They were flavorful. We got the cheese appetizers. It was a little greasy and oily. I ordered the shrimp tacos that were tiny shrimp. The corn tortillas were so oily that I didn't touch them and just had the shrimp. For some reason, they gave me fries and not beans with my tacos. What can I say that I haven't already said about Costa Messa, or what has been written on Yelp or other platforms. Costa has some of the best Mexican food in the RGV. I've had other dishes but I really come here for the Botana platter as it is one of the best in the Valley, plentiful and flavorful, and you are sure to take home leftovers. We came on a Friday evening and it was packed, so we had to wait for 45 minutes. The inside is an open dining room that gives off a community ambiance but it can get loud. Servers were attentive and friendly. I ordered an enchilada plate and they were super stingy with their red enchilada sauce...you don't skimp on red sauce, especially on enchiladas! That's what makes the enchilada! What a horrible evening we had last night, we made the decisions to celebrate our mom's birthday there and waited over an hour to be seated to be put back on the waiting list. Our table was "ready" and were being seated and then left there standing at a dirty table that was too small for our party of 14. We were just left there standing and then a waiter comes and ask what we're doing there and I explain that the host brought us to our table. The waiter then RUDELY says it's DIRTY and too small for our party and for us to move out of the way. We stood there waiting as the host and waiter that had originally taken us to the table asked to wait there while they figured out what to do. Super upset at the fact that I called before showing up to make sure I didn't need a reservation and to inquire about the wait times. I was assured there was no wait and did not need a reservation. We went here for my cousins wedding dinner with all of the relatives and friends over. We got our own private room and had around 80 guests I believe. It was stacked in 2 large rows. We ended up getting sweet tea with a lemonade and it was so good that I ended up getting 4 cups full. We ended up getting a big platter which is the botana platter for 4. I saw on the website it was for $66 dollars. The platter is huge, but it was just me and another person eating the platter, so there was a lot still on the place. If I would have known this, I probably would have taken some home. They did gave us chips and dip and I ended up eating a lot of those before the main course. The meat was alright. Chicken was a little dry though. Service was pretty good however. I would not mind coming here again, but this is great of occassions. read more

A few years ago, at the recommendation of a coworker, I decided to try Costa Messa. Said coworker and I visited the location near the mall, and we had a delicious meal at that location. Fast forward to today, a few years later. The location near the mall is now permanently closed, so I opted to patronize this location and hoped for a repeat delicious meal with a group of coworkers. Upon walking in I visited the restroom before the meal. Unfortunately that set the mood for the rest of the experience, as the bathroom was disgusting. I'll spare the details, as we are going to be talking about food. Upon walking out of the restroom, a displeasing odor permeated throughout the restaurant, and waited for me at the table. Right away my coworkers and I played the "guess the noxious odor" game. After contemplating rotten food, some sort of cheese, or a dirty wet rag, we all came to the conclusion it was the latter of the three. I ordered the fajitas, hoping they'd be the star of my visit, and turn things around for this place. I ordered both corn and flour tortillas, as I like variety, and like to party. The fajita plate came in good time and the plate was full of beef. I received three flour tortillas, and no corn. No big deal, I'll make the three work. This place charges for extra tortillas, which I do not understand. The fajitas had no taste, had a slimy texture and full of fat. No seasoning, no meat like texture, and no charred taste of a fajita. I attempted to eat two tacos and at this point hoping I did not eat rotten meat (hence, the slimy texture). Stopped short of finishing taco number two, and threw in the napkin. Others at the table said they were disappointed and how this location was not as good as the other locations. No one raved about their food, and we all left disappointed. Will not be back. read more

They have the best Shrimp Cocktail I've had in The Valley for the price. I always order it and it's always fresh and never tastes fishy or old. I ask for extra crackers which they usually forget but it's okay because it's also good with those regular tortilla chips that you can get at the Michoacana type stores or just use regular crackers from Home. read more

We went on Friday night. We ordered a botana, which was delicious. Service was ok, I understand they were busy, it is what it is. But, I don't want to be sitting in a dirty booth/window. As you can see from the photos there was a dead fly and another bug who knows how long it had been there. They need to make time to clean the windows/ledges more often, that was very gross. Bad service from the start. The hostess (Melba) was rude and acted like she was the boss. Then we requested a special table because our son is handicap and he can't seat on a high table that she assigned to us. After that another waiter noticed me getting upset and tried to accommodate us but she came in and overruled his decision. Finally we got a table. Well then we waited for about 15 mins for a waiter to come and take our drink order which their menus don't have. Well after all that we were told we would get some chips and salsa but they forgot! After that I requested to speak to the manager Mary. Mary was very apologetic about the whole situation. She felt bad about our experience. Well I can honestly say that this place is overrated. We went to eat here a couple weeks ago and everything went really well! The place was full and had about a ten minute wait. The chips and salsa's were fantastic and our waiter was great. He was very friendly and came to the table in a timely manner for refills etc. For our appetizer we had a choriqueso and that was fantastic. The caldo that we got before our meal was also great. The broth had great flavor. For our mains we had the Mexican platter and the cheese enchilada plate. Both were very good and definitely something that we will get again. The only complaint I had was that the sweet tea wasn't very good but I'll just get water next time. read more

This is a McAllen staple! The food is great but this particular visit was just lacking in portion and quality. We ordered a botana for 3 and it was mostly chips and beans - they skimped on the meat. However, I will be returning because I love their caldo tlapeno! It is usually pretty reliable so maybe this was just an off day! Either way, give it a try! read more
