Grabbed some carnitas to go while in Ashland City yesterday, they were ok, but a little hard and dry. I did however like the beans which were very flavorful and loved the touch of the whole pickled Jalapeño. I also had them prepare some food for a Doctor's office of mine. They did a pretty good job. The food was tasty, but I don't feel that they prepared enough food for what I paid. We did run out of food pretty quickly. I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to Mexican food but damn, they' do it right. Anything with steak here is beyond awesome. I'm sure the chicken dishes are good too but I've found my favorite and will stick with it. It's a very mellow establishment and I've never had to wait for anything. read more

We placed a fairly large to go order from El Ray via Postmates. The food was packed well and the serving sizes were generous, Everything was included so fortunately we did not have to make extra trips for forgotten orders, as is so frequently the case with carry out orders of this size. We got a wide variety of meals and was very please with everything. The flavors, the style of the food and presentation was better than we anticipated. Could be that we have the bar set low from so many disappointing meals recently, but much can be said for how well this meal was and how happy we were all around. We plan to return to El Ray again in the near future and look forward to a repeat experience. read more

This Store gets 4 Stars because of the limited choices for the area. It is good Tex-Mex for TN. This is one of 2 Mexican restaurants in the area. This one if my favorite. El Rey is one of my top 3 Tex-Mex places in the Nashville area when it comes to "plain ol' " food. I am a big fan of "salsa picosa" (spicy salsa) and this place has some great stuff. I usually judge a Tex-Mex place by the salsa and salsa picosa then the carnitas (roast pork). The service here is generally very good. It is also generally clean. I don't drink so I cannot give you a read on how good the margaritas are but my friends and family that do say they are good. If you are in the area, give this place a try. If you like pork, try the carnitas and ask for some salsa picosa or some chili's toreados. Add some heat to your food! read more

After Strattons was too busy, my Girlfriend and I stopped in here for lunch. (We even used the wrong door to get in, but it didn't seem to matter.) The prices are pretty right here. We shared the Fajitas for two and for 20 dollars it was a lot of Fajitas. Otherwise a pretty average Mexican meal. The waitress didn't seemed as concerned with us as might have been nice. The parking might also be a problem, though we didn't have any when we were there. read more

So, there are two Mexican spots in Ashland City and so far, based on one meal at each, I vastly prefer the other one. We went to El Rey with some out of town friends as we were all too tired to make the trek into Nashville the evening they arrived and all of us had a hankering for Mexican food. It was a Friday evening but the place was dead. It's in a cool location downtown on the square and the service was friendly. Nothing we ordered was bad by any means but nothing really stood out. I had one of the margaritas that mixes in Corona and instead of the 6 oz. Coronas they just had the standard 12 oz and the margarita mainly tasted like beer (hey, I still drank it). The chips were basic as was the salsa and the dishes were pretty good though a little salty and greasy. Menu choices are standard. I'll definitely give them another shot but it didn't impress me as much as their competitors did. read more

Food came out warm at best, not hot or freshly cooked. Meat had bad after taste like it was expired. Pretty sure it was as I got sick after. Even the vegetables tasted horrible. I've been here a few times now and always had a good experience. The food is TexMex style and hefty portions for sure! The chunky jalapeno guacamole is to die for and the flan is just ten shades past foodgasmic. They are a family friendly restaurant and my baby has a tooth for those tortilla chips! read more

El Reys is our favorite Mexican food restaurant in the area. The other two (one in Pleasant View and the other by Walmart in Ashland city) are generic at best. The staff are friendly and fun. As native southern Californians we were practically raised on Mexican food. You won't be sorry with El Rey's! read more

I are here for lunch with some coworkers. One of them said she loved this place. The restaurant was spacious with a lot of seating. Our server was quick to bring us chips and salsa and take our orders. Unfortunately that's where the good ends. Our server seemed a less than thrilled to be there. He asked us if we wanted refills as if it was a total inconvenience. The salsa tasted like canned tomatoes--little to no spice. I ordered the chicken chimichanga with beans. Very bland and had little improvement with salt. Maybe I should have known something was up since it was lunchtime on a weekday and the place was next to empty. read more

Authentic Mexican fare, reasonable prices. The family goes here every few months. I usually get enchiladas, but the fajitas are fine too, made with plenty of onions and bell peppers if you like the veggies. Had lunch with a friend. They offer standard Mexican fare very well prepared. I had tacos de carne asada. The meat was tender and flavorful, there were three tacos generously stuffed. The refried beans were well seasoned and the rice was firm and flavorful. I tasted my friend's chile verde. It was meaty, with bold flavors and a nice heat. The service was adequate but uninspired. Food was mediocre. I had the Carne Asada & it was very tuff. My wife @ I also ordered a pitcher of margaritas. The mix tasted like 70% water but ialso Could NOT taste tequila. We mentioned it to the waiter and asked him to sample it. He brought another pitcher which we could taste the tequila but the mix itself tasted terrible. El Rey, is your standard Mexican restaurant but it is the employees that make it great. The food isn't bad at all, but it is standard and will do if you are craving Mexican food. This place is !GREAT! when they aren't busy, but if it is during dinner rush, the service is quite disorganized (but still friendly). I really like the location, food, and staff... Been a while since we went to El Rey for dinner so we went. Granted it was a Friday but after tonight's experience, we won't go back. Walked in, sign says "wait it be seated" after 10 minutes we managed to catch the eye of a server, motioned as if to ask if we can seat ourselves... he shrugged his shoulders as if it didn't matter, so we managed to find a booth which we instantly received chips and salsa...that was it for more than 35 minutes. No menus, drink order, no one acknowledged we were even there...we tried to get the attention of anyone but the 3 servers were steadily running every where else but in our area. Others were coming in as well and seating themselves in the same area we were in and seemed to have the same issues so we remained patient...UNTIL a larger group walked in and before the entire party had even sat down, they had menus, drinks came immediately and their server placed their order...we STILL had not seen a server...finally after standing up and flagging someone down, a server comes over and said he KNEW we had been there a long time but he had to get to others and answer the phone and blah blah blah.... SERIOUSLY?? Did he just make that OUR PROBLEM?? We should have just walked out at that point but we gave him our drink and food order since we knew it might be awhile before he returned. I was right...food took longer than usual to receive and wasn't hot at all but once we got it...that was the last we saw our server...Needless to say, we had to go to the register to chase down the bill, we couldn't wait to get out of there...the whole experience was disappointing and frustrating, and why we hadn't gone for a while to begin with. Which is sad beings this town is limited on decent sit down restaurants... The quality of food has gone down and obviously the service depends on the mood of the servers. Sad!!! read more
