So this is one of two "go-to" places for breakfast tacos locally for me. The other is Dos Tacos. Two different types of food. This morning it was El Rey. I normally get tocas thru the drive thru, but today, the wife and I went in. We went with our usual tacos - bean, bacon, chz y cilantro, but added a beef empanada. The tacos were great as always. The empanada was very tasty. They only have beef and chicken, so went with the beef. Excellent flavor. We got an additional beef and chicken to take home. As for the drinks, which I normally don't mention, unless it's ice cold beer, the wife had fresh homemade lemonade. Very good. I went with the mulata iced coffee. Wow....that was good. Way better than anything at Starbucks. My opinion. And, and...they have a full bar. Great prices. Give them a try. read more

OK, first off normally these little types of restaurants that are tiny El Rey Taqueria has been around forever Memorial city this location serves liquor and it has a bar. It's not a full bar, but it's tequila and Mexican lattes a Mexican coffees. Everything to represent the heritage they don't skip out on making your drink perfect I would give them 10 stars if I could their normal margaritas are eight dollars where other people in the industry are charging $12-$14 per se best kept secret in the KATIE location. This is definitely one of my new faves top five.ERICK makes superb drinks and he has superb service. You wouldn't expect this from a place like this amazing and Natalia was very helpful. I've been going to El Rey for a while, ever since they opened the location by Shepherd and it has always been great. I was happy to see them open this location close to my job & home. I like the service & I really like the new screen on the drive through. The Ropa Vieja plate is my favorite, followed by the Bistec sandwich, shrimp & ropa vieja tacos & the cantaloupe drink! I've been an occasional customer for years and have noticed a slow decline in quality and value. I did decide to give El Rey's another try and was even more disappointed. Went through the drive through and decided to order a chicken and a beef Empanada... "new" menu items. Well, finally got the food, and noticed these were not marked to distinguish one from the other; plus no receipt. Couldn't get anyone's attention so I had to go inside to get the person who serviced the order to provide a receipt & asked a nice young lady which was which. Got home with the food - chicken for wife beef for me. Never again. The crust was doughy and flavorless. Meat fair at best. I think I understand why the number of locations is dwindling and I'm not likely to return because of below average food and lacking service. read more

For price point, not the best. Burritos are loaded with rice so opt to ask for no rice and maybe you will get more protein. The rotisserie chicken looks amazing in the front and I ordered one. They must have older ones in the back and mine tasted dry and a day or two old. Go to Kroger for this. The vegetables with the chicken were great and the best part of the meal. I've noticed less and less people going here and there is a reason why. Needs a small overhaul with quality if pricing stays where it is. Not bad but too expensive for the overall food experience. Always wanted to try this place and finally did at lunch. We had the tacos and burrito within queso and chips. The service was the best part of our dining experience. This is now the fourth time El Rey Taqueria has messed up my order, and at this point it honestly feels intentional. My order couldn't be simpler -- a bacon and egg taco, well-done eggs. Yet every single time, they find a way to mess it up. I waited 10-15 minutes in the drive-thru for what I assumed would be a properly cooked taco. I open the bag, and there's no bacon, and the eggs are watery instead of well done. This has happened repeatedly. I always call, they either refund me or remake the order but it keeps happening. This last time I spoke with a manager named Francisco, who didn't seem to care at all. No apology, no concern just issued me a partial refund for a messed-up order. Horrible experience from start to finish. At this point, it's clear they don't care about their customers or quality control. read more

Gosh this place is soooooo good. The inside seating area was empty, except for one party of 4. But the drive thru line seems very busy. Which makes me happy bc this place is amazing. I love the rotisserie chicken and grilled veggies to be sure, but this was off set by the service. Those at the counter were more concerned about their phones than taking our orders. We could not communicate with the person serving our dish without pointing to what we needed and even then did not get what we needed without going to the counter. I have been eating El Rey since I was a freshman in college 15 years ago I would stop by every morning for breakfast tacos downtown, they served them out of this little window. Was always My favorite part of the day here we are 15 years later and still loving every time I have an opportunity to stop by or see we treat El Rey quite similar to Buckys. You have to stop. My go to is always the Havana plate that flavor and mix with the onion and sautéed with black beans mmmm mouth watering. Their location are always immaculate and food is always fresh and hot! My husband and I ordered online to skip the lunch rush (especially after reading the reviews about the drive thru line being a long wait). We ordered the fish taco and the shrimp (summer version with the avocado), the chx rotisserie torta, and the fajita meat plate. The tacos were delicious and we're great for the price. I ordered them on flour tortilla and they were stuffed with fillings. The meat plate came with refried beans and rice, both cooked really nice and we'll seasoned, but the meat was very thinly sliced and not a lot in the plate itself. It was mostly onions and such versus meat. He said it was still very good, but, if that was all he had ordered, he'd be hungry still. When we went to pick up, we ended up picking up from the drive thru line since we came in from the back of the restaurant and did not see the.online order/curbside pick up parking spots at the front of the store (facing the freeway). The line moved fairly well with three cars in front of us and did not seem like a long wait, but maybe we were lucky? This was one of my favorite spots when I lived in Montrose and I'm super glad to see one opened up in Katy! Honestly, all I know about is the breakfast taco situation. I'm told they have a lunch menu too but I can't tell you anything about it - this is a go-to-breakfast-taco-spot in my household. This morning I got an egg and potato (+ bacon because duh) breakfast taco on a flour tortilla. The kind gentleman at the register suggested I include refried beans, which I was all about. It was a good decision, I assure you. I love their hot sauces - they're the perfect compliment to the breakfast tacos and, I'd guess, also a wonderful accompaniment to any of their other dishes. The dining area is also pretty rad - we loved looking around at all the decor from our seat at the [very long] bar while we watched a soccer match on one of their giant TV's. Second time here and it was worse than the first time. I had the fajita beef burrito that besides having little meat actually had chicken in it. Guacamole, sour cream and cheese were nearly non existent. In fact, the whole burrito was filled with rice and not much else. My wife had the tortilla soup and said it was good. Her grilled chicken was okay. Another of our party had a chicken bowl and said the chicken did not appear to be cooked. Someone else had grilled chicken and said it appeared to be under cooked. We love coming to this location because the food is delicious but lately we noticed that the tortillas are not fully cooked. Maybe because we're ordering drive thru and they are in a hurry but today it was really raw it got stuck to the paper it's packed in. Taco Tuesday! Three tacos of any variety for $8.50. Our party of three ordered grilled fish, grilled shrimps, Cuban, el pastor, and ropa vieja tacos. We also ordered the El Rey ceviche to share. All the tacos were seasoned perfectly and tasted yummy. The ceviche wasn't the traditional Tex-Mex version, more of a fish ceviche salad with lots of veggies. However the fish slices were fresh and not mushy. It was very refreshing especially with the diced mango and extra lime juice. Counter service was friendly and quick.
