I wish I could give zero stars. I went out for a late Mother's Day celebration yesterday only to find a bloody bandaid in my food. When I requested to speak to the manager the server responded that he wasn't available. This is disgusting. Saw a Peruvian sign while looking for a lunch spot in the area and got a little excited! My wife is Peruvian and we make criollo food often at home and eat out a lot while with family in Florida and Peru. We just moved to CT and tried two other Peruvian places and were disappointed. We were about to give up and decide that we'll just have to make our own, but then we found Rincon! They apparently just opened in July 2013. They didn't seem to have lunch prices but the plates we ordered ($10-12) were easily the size of 2-3 servings each. We were able to take home plenty of leftovers. The Tacu Tacu con Bistek is awesome here. We will definitely go back and try more menu items. Their chicha morada (purple corn drink made with cinnamon, clove, etc) is made in house (not from a syrup) and is so good!! read more

Came here on Sunday night with my boyfriend and his daughter. Its a weird place as its set up as a bar but there is no alcohol served. We took the one low table in the front area. We waited a long time from when the waitress gave us menus to place our orders (including drinks). But we could see her on her phone behind the bar just standing there the whole time. On top of that she did not speak any english, even water she had to look to my spanish speaking boyfriend for a translation. Drinks came she forgot his daughters drink for another 30 mins. We waited a VERY long time for our food and we were one of only 3 tables being occupied. However, the only reason i'm even giving 3 stars is the food was on point. The mussels appetizer (incorrectly labeled clams on their menu) was terrific! If u like spicy ask for it spicy but make sure she brought you a drink first cause its extremely spicy!! My boyfriend got the chaufa and it was hugeeeee and perfect he said. I got the steak enceballado (that is spelled wrong) and the steak was very good and tasty. Overall they get a 1 maybe 2 for service since she was nice (from what i could see not understand) but their food is a 3/4. Love Peruvian food. I first tried lomo saltado at Fiesta in Stamford, which is only slightly better than this place. The lomo was really good, just as good as Incas in Milford, but this place is closer and delivers. They only gave me one spicy sauce though. I would say a lomo needs at least two sauces, ask for extra. read more

I came here today because a family member told me that the food was great. The food was really good. I have never eaten Peruvian food before and did not know what to expect. I ordered the fried plantains and a chicken plate. There was enough food to feed three people. My son and I split the meal and still had leftovers. With the large amount of Peruvians in New Haven, I'm surprised there are not many Peruvians restaurants in the area. El Rincon Peruano offers decent Peruvian food, not the best Peruvian I had (that would be in Huacho and Trujillo, Peru by the way); but decent enough to make you want to go back. I've been coming since it first opened, so I agree with the early reviews that pointed out that the service was terrible...it used to be that bad. But fortunately enough, the service has consistently improved. Now regarding the food, there are several dishes that are very good, and a few that are bad. My favorites include Cabrito a la Norteña and Caldo de Gallina (both from the Weekend Special Menu). The cabrito (lamb) gravy is full of flavor and the right amount of thickness. It's served over white beans along with white rice and salsa criolla. The Caldo de Gallina is a clear soup with linguine noodles, a boiled egg and the famous Peruvian papa amarilla (a kind of potatoe that only grows in Peru). The broth has tons of flavor and you can add the scallions that come on the side and some lime juice and rocoto (Peruvian hot sauce) to give it an extra kick. Another good dishes are the Bistec a lo Pobre (Peruvian steaks are usually thin-cut and made well done), Arroz Chaufa (Peruvian Fried Rice), Aeropuerto (Fried Rice with Lo Mein mixed together), Pescado a lo Macho (Fish Fillet with a Garlic thick sauce), Lomo Saltado (steak cut in small pieces and mixed with onions, tomatoes and a bit of soy sauce). For soups, Sopa a la Minuta and Sopa de Pescado are very good. Their ceviche is so-so towards good. They need to let the fish cook a little more in the lime juice. For bad dishes, the Arroz con Mariscos was pretty bad, it seems they just mixed some orange rice with seafood that was prepared separately; thus the rice lacked that seafood flavor that must have from being cooked all together. All in all, the restaurant has some good food but it needs a little more dish variety. For that I would go to the Peruvian restaurants in Hartford which are a must-try for excellent Peruvian food in the States. read more

I want to give them one star for service and three stars for food. I'm trying to be fair because the food was pretty good, but the service was horrific. We came here for dinner because I've been dying for ceviche, and the place that I usually get it from closed last year. Very few places around here make it the way I like it, and this was the closest place with good reviews that I found on Yelp, so we came here. From the second we walked in, we almost left because the place was completely empty - or so we thought. There were actually a few tables in a weird back room that were occupied, not sure why. They weren't a private party or anything, so I found that strange. Why would you want to make your restaurant look empty? The waitress came over to us with menus in hand (to, one would assume, seat us? Not sure, she didn't speak) and just stood there. Okay. Well then. So I asked if we could sit anywhere? And she mumbled something back to me, but I have no idea what she said, the person I was with speaks Spanish and he had no idea what she said, and she wasn't giving us any indication that she was seating us or telling us to take a seat, so we just sat down at a random table. At this point I realized it'd just be easier for him to handle the ordering because she was speaking so quietly and mumbling so much that there was no way the two of us would be able to communicate effectively. Again, fine, not a big deal, we're at an authentic Peruvian restaurant, I'm the one that should know Spanish, not vice versa. So he handled ordering and asking a few questions that we had on the menu. Again, no big deal, whatever. But she was speaking so quietly and mumbling so much that he couldn't figure out what she was saying anyway. We ordered our food and hoped for the best. The food came out within a reasonable amount of time, the portions were large, and the food was good. I've had better, but it was definitely good, and based on food alone, I would definitely return. The service was painful at best, and just continued to get worse. After we got our meals we didn't see her again for another 45 minutes. Not to ask how the food was, not to ask if we needed anything (we did, drinks.), not even to see if any other customers had walked in. She finally came back into the dining room, but ignored us and went back into the kitchen, so we had to wait another ten minutes to get her attention, and another 30 minutes for the bill. I have to give this place one star. It was a long process due to bad service from the start. First, I called and the lady had a tough time understanding English and she randomly hung up on me in the middle of trying to understand my order. I assume that it was an accident and she just panicked. Secondly, I called back and when the lady answered, she only speaks Spanish, so she was kind enough to put me on the phone with someone that tried to speak English. That didn't work either. So a third guy took my order. I ordered 1 lomo soltado and 1 carne asada. I arrive 20 minutess later to pick up the food. The lady said something I couldn't understand and then she said the price of my order. She seemed nice, but seemed a little on edge probably due to me not understanding her. I went home and checked my Lomo Soltado and that looked and smelled phenomenal. However, the carne asada wasn't all there. Where was the bananas and the french fries like the menu said?!!! All it had was pile of rice and dry looking piece of steak. So now I drive back to the place ( I live on the other side of West Haven) to see what happened with my order. I tried to tell the lady what happened. Luckily there were some spanish speaking patrons to help me. The lady that worked there got some guy from the back that i assumed was the chef and I told him that he forgot the other stuff. He was very apologetic and tried to see if I wanted other vegetables and sides instead. The lady patron that helped me out said that the restaurant had trouble with their item delivery truck so some items weren't in stock. Needless to say i asked for my money back and they had no problem doing so. The guy was very sorry. My problem wasn't with the communication problems. It was that they made the food without having all of the ingredients and tried to pass it off without telling me. They actually charged regular price and everything.
