Had high hopes for El Rodeo in the Colonial Park area but was very disappointed. Tried to give the benefit of the doubt but, in retrospect, trust my instincts. The waitress didn't know what top shelf tequila was and said their tequila drinks come from a machine, which we accepted. The tortilla chips appetizer probably came from a bag; they were not hot, crispy or tasty. The ground beef taco salad was detestable -- only runny, watery beef and a bit of cheese sauce. Worst taco salad I ever had. The beef hard taco and enchilada dinner left much to be desired. The tacos, rice and refried beans were passable but nowhere near delicious. The beef enchilada was tasteless and the con queso sauce was so watery that we had to pour some of it into an empty glass. We will never return. read more

Visiting family and stopped in here on a recommendation. The restaurant looks awesome inside. Very clean and the staff are really friendly. Every time we travel we struggle to find a good Mexican restaurant. Having Hispanic people our party makes it even more difficult due to expectations. We ordered burritos because we were in hurry but not all burritos are created equal and often make or break a restaurant. They did not disappoint. The right type of rice and carne asada with a slight crisp to it, the portion was just the right size and tasted great. When we visit again we will definitely try this place for the rest of the menu. read more

Not as good as the Lemoyne location based on service, wait time for food, and flavor. Not bad, just not great and what I'm used to getting at other locations. Saturday evening at 5:30 pm and this place was already packed in the parking lot and inside. No wait for a table but where were at least half a dozen food delivery drivers waiting for their orders. Pretty wild! Service was a little slow due to the large number of tables-like all of them were full. Covid precautions in place and no complaints over social distancing. I'm used to things tasting a certain (excellent) way and this location did not match previous experiences. Not totally disappointing, just not as good. Tacos Del Mar specifically were lacking. The enchilada sauce was different-not bad, just not as good as usual. Salsa was good and spicy and was just like other locations. Solid choice for Mexican fare on the east shore. read more

El Rodeo is a good place to go for Mexican food and is family-friendly. They have a full bar and decent specials. i love the brightly colored tables and chairs here--they make the space feel happy. Service is always good when we stop for a meal. It can take a while for drinks to come from the bar on a busy night. The food is decent. I really enjoy the complimentary salsa & chips. The salsa has a really nice amount of heat. I typically enjoy the Queso fundido, but today it was super thin. It was hard to even scoop it onto the tortilla chips. For my meal, I usually get #16 platter because I like the combination of items in that dinner. There's a chalupa, a beef burrito and your choice of chile relleno with either beef or cheese. I feel like this is a good value and is consistently good. There's nothing spectacular about the food here, but I have never left unsatisfied. read more

I have dined at this particular location on several occasions and they are always out of limes and horchatas. The lunch specials are GREAT! My go-to is their trio tacos so you can have chicken, pork, and steak. They also are very accommodating if you are vegan. I suggest you order the house guacamole over the cup guacamole if you can. The cup guacamole does not compare to the house guacamole. Service is great depending on the time you go. If it gets busy the servers are overwhelmed and try to manage as best they can. read more

Visited here with a few friends for a Saturday girls lunch. We were seated immediately in a corner booth and ordered pitchers of frozen margaritas right away - strawberry and raspberry. This was my first time having one from here and I have to say the raspberry was the best. It tasted like real raspberries. YUM. The perfect drink for a 96 degree day!! I ordered the lunch portion of the Burrito San Jose, which is filled with chicken (or steak), chorizo, rice and beans--topped with queso and Pico de Gallo -- it's always my favorite go to when visiting Mexican restaurants. The complimentary chips and salsa were delicious -- the salsa was a little spicy, but I love it like that. Service was great with Rob as our server. We are a group of girls that don't get together too much so we were a little loud and "fun" but Robert was very patient and attentive. Oh boy! Where do I start? I used to love El Rodeo way back in the days. 15 years ago, I went here pretty often because the food was delicious and the mariachi band was awesome. Fast forward, I haven't been here much but always wanted to come back. My boyfriend and I decided to stop by for a quick dinner after work. We both love Mexican food and we were excited since we haven't been out much due to Covid. The restaurant decors were the same as I remembered. However, the food wasn't delicious like it used to be. I ordered a house margarita with a lot of salt on the rim. My margarita came out with barely any salt and it tasted like a non-alcoholic lemonade. Needless to say, we were both disappointed. Love El Rodeo!!!! I ordered the Chicken Quesadilla Rellena with a side of rice and an order of nachos with cheese for takeout - everything was still warm when I brought it home and they even included a side of chips and salsa! It was Cinco de Mayo, so there was a little wait time when I got to the restaurant to pickup, but totally reasonable given the holiday. Great experience, great service, GREAT FOOD. read more

We are done with this filthy place! We received our basket of chips and salsa and asked for more chips to go with our cheese dip. When we were done with the chips (before the food came) I moved the red basket to put all of our trash in it. On the table was some disgusting old guacamole on our table. I lifted the basket up and the bottom of the red basket was layered black guacamole, That had to have been there for a long time to turn that color. The manager was passing by at the moment I showed it to him and he acted like nothing was wrong. After eating, we ran to the restroom. There was no toilet paper in the one stall, and the other stall had a little bit of toilet paper, but not in the machine (just laying there) I picked that one up and took some off to give to the person whom didn't have any next door. Here the roll had Poop on the side of the roll. How freeking disgusting!!!! My family and I will never step foot in this filthy restaurant again! read more

Wife and I had lunch at el rodeo. We were really disappointed with our lunch. Our food was not hot and the taste was just not there. Service was good. It will be a while before we return to el rodeo on jonestown road. I give the service 4 stars. The food I give 2 stars. Restaurant was clean so that is a good thing. We had a Lady server don't remember her name because she never said it !! She was super impatient we don't go out for Mexican food a lot but this place use to be our Go to but the new Servers are untrained and looking to serve what ever table they think they'll make the most profit . Every once in a while, I go back to this restaurant thinking it's going to be better. And it never is. I told my girlfriend if I ever say let's go to El Rodeo in colonial Park again, to punch me in the face lol. $16 for three tacos. $11 for a margarita that I could not tell if there was any tequila in it at all. I think fiesta Mexico is way better that's where I will go from now on. read more

My daughter ordered a Chicken Borrito and got something in a flour tortilla with a bunch of smothered sauce and cheese on it and around it. When I asked the waiter he tried to educate me that it was a borrito. Clearly it was an enchilada and clearly he messed up and instead of owning it he tried feeding be bull. I then asked for the manager and 10 minutes later she shows up and says that this was a borrito. So since they couldn't be honest and just admit they made a mistake they now lost a customer and got a few reviews. Not hard to admit when your wrong but in their case they lost a customer, a tip, and hopefully this review will teach other not to trust them either. So disappointed!!!! read more

I will not be back. I have gone here so many times over the past 14 years and always loved it! I haven't been in several years. The place is filthy. Everything. It needs a serious deep cleaning. I've been to El Rodeo probably a twenty times in my life. It is a local staple.. a place where you can get consistent good Mexican food. I can't claim to be an expert, but on most visits I leave very satisfied. On my most recent trip I tried a new item the San Jose Burrito which is an extra large burrito covered with a jalapeño queso cheese sauce. I found it to be very delicious. The meal also comes with chips and salsa which is typical. This salsa has a little heat to it which I prefer. Service is usually good and food comes out fast. Just a tip, they also have $3 house margarita happy hour specials on some evenings which can't be beat. read more

Amo la comida Mexicana! (I love Mexican food). Thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor patio -that was the first time we did that at an El Rodeo. Chairs were comfy. I had a Corona with lime. Chicken with red mole sauce was moist and tender. The guacamole dip was delish. They have homemade version at your table but we didn't want to stuff ourselves, since that's a huge portion but oh so good. Steak fajitas were sizzlingly delicious with onions, tomatoes and green peppers. Mmm, the smell makes you mouth water. Comes with the fixings but not necessary since it could stand alone. Very busy night inside and outside. The food all came out quick. However, understandable, the waitress was hard to find to get refill of drinks. Maybe ask for water and your drink to have a backup on busy days. Staff was friendly and helpful. read more

Similar to other Mexican restaurants, El Rodeo has an extensive menus with wide ranges of authentic dishes to choose from. The food here is above average and they come in big portion. Their seasoning is spot on and their meat dishes are pretty flavorful. With that being said, the side food that come with your main course such as rice, fried bean, and salad are a little bit sloppy and they can be improved. Besides food, this restaurant has impressive and credible interior design when it tries to re-create an authentic Mexican environment. The decorations play a big role in completing a whole dining experience here. Though between booths and tables in the middle area, you don't have a lot of private space because it's pretty open and tables are close to each other. read more

As far as Mexican food goes in the Harrisburg area this place is tolerable. Biggest down fall is it doesn't offer unlimited chips and salsa. Another strike against this place is the quality of service. The employees are slow and don't do well following recognizing the needs of a costumer. It's not uncommon to be out of a drink or finished with your meal for 10 minutes before your server checks on you. Even on a slow night expect this sort of service. Food isn't anything special. The rice is unlike any Spanish rice I've ever had before. It is very bland and greasy. The ground beef also lacks seasoning. With a few changes this place could be a real hit. Otherwise they need to reduce their prices because the quality is not worth the price. read more

Absolutely disappointed in service. Waiter was no where to be seen, had no refill in chips, no one greeted us when we sat, no sliverware was given or napkins. I was pleasantly surprised with how delicious everything was. I am new to the area and am from Reading area and there are PLENTY of delicious Mexican restaurants there. We got the Villa Sampler, Carne Asada and queso fundido. Queso fundido was delicious and has ground beef in it with great flavor. We also got chips and salsa brought to the table when we arrived (free of charge not sure if this has changed since other reviews i saw). The asada was good my boyfriend said he would've added more spices but it was regardless well done. I got the villa sampler and it was delicious. The margarita was super good as well! read more

There was some type of hot sauce (Valentina brand) here that that we put on it made it significantly better. The helado de fresa or strawberry ice cream ($1.50) balanced it out. We also had the Bistek Ranchero: it came with 6 yellow corn tortillas, onions, cilantro, beans, rice & lots of beef, mixed with red pepper. That cost 14.00 pretty decent if you ask me. What makes this place stand out in my opinion is the " tostada ceviche de camaron " or lime marinaded seafood salad on a deep fried corn tortilla. I will still remember the time that I was so excited and felt a bliss of the taste of their Birria tacos as well as many of their signature dishes, such as the yucca and chicharron. However, if this were to be true, it's such a shame that a place like this would take so much advantage on people like that, specifically their employees. Fortunately, there are definitely other places that now do birria tacos as well as been noted for bringing authentic Mexican cuisine in the Harrisburg area (some even cheaper and taste better than this place). But until they get their act together, I cannot support a place that does not support other people.

The salsa was delicious, with just a hint of heat. Entrees included a Pizza Birria, which was like a quesadilla, but more interesting. The tortilla had a well-cooked look to it, the center layer of braised beef, cheese and onions was thick enough to satisfy even the hungriest. The majority was taken home in leftovers. Another "never before seen" items was the chimichanga -- available soft or fried. What? A chimichanga is a FRIED burrito. If its not fried, its a burrito. Which, soft in this version, looked and was delicious, but I'm still confused. Finally, my Chicken Mole Poblano. So Much Food! And it was yummy! Slightly sweeter than what I'm used to, but trust me when I say I scarfed almost all of it down -- without the tortillas. A great night out, I know more family will visit it this week. I ordered the shrimp fajitas. It came with a side of rice and a salad, but I was offered rice and beans, but I chose the rice with the salad. My family member ordered a single relleno and was satisfied with her meal. The atmosphere is fun and lively and I feel that every time just brings me back to good reliable, hard-working people.

Shrimp, bay scallops, crab, and mushrooms all swimming in a red tomatillo sauce, baked under a gooey blanket of cheese, and served with chips. Unlike so many "seafood" dips that are 90% cheese, El Sol delivers with generous amounts of actual seafood. It was piping hot, hearty, and plentiful -- enough that we happily took leftovers home. For mains, I went with a Birria Taco (plus a trusty Diet Coke). Juicy, cheesy, crispy perfection -- I could've polished off three more but restrained myself. Adventure Buddy chose Camarones A La Diabla -- jumbo Gulf shrimp and mushrooms in a three-chile sauce. Bright red, spicy but not overpowering, and loaded with shrimp that were actually jumbo. He was a happy camper. Our total came to $62 with tip, which felt fair for the quality and portions. Service was attentive and friendly, and the noise level low enough for both conversation and even a quick phone call. Parking is the usual downtown Harrisburg scene -- no on-site lot, but free street parking after 5 and garages nearby make it easy enough. Bottom line: great food, colorful atmosphere, and a menu that's begging us to come back. Next time, I'm eyeing one of those lava rock molcajetes.
