Next thing there was a knock at the door and the most amazing food was dropped off...PLAZA AZTECA!!! I NEVER HAD PLAZA AZTECA BEFORE BUT THIS SLAPPED! We ended up getting something called Birria Tacos with some sort of Queso Blanco Cheese Sauce...Let me tell you...God blessed that food! It was like Heaven on Earth. The tacos came with rich, flavorful birria, queso Chihuahua, onions, and cilantro, along with a side of savory broth for dipping served with rice. She also got the lunch fajita burrito with steak and sautéed onions, topped with cheese sauce and sour cream, and served with rice and beans. To drink, she had a horchata--so good! They also brought out chips with salsa and a Mexican ranch dipping sauce, which I really enjoyed. Overall, everything was delicious. Sad to say our last visit was nothing like our previous excellent lunches and dinners. Slow service from a waitress who was absent most of the time and the food was just not good as it had been. My enchiladas were warm, not hot, lacking flavor and extra greasy. The wife's shrimp tacos were lousy. Precooked shrimp that tasted like it was sitting in the bottom of a steam table pan all day. (Obviously, it was because the food came out in about a minute after we ordered.) Not fresh and delicious as it once was. This was our 1st time visiting this restaurant and we would return again. This isn't the best Mexican around, but it was still very delicious. The parking lot is big, easy parking, there is a bar area and a nice size dining room. We got complementary chips and salsa, and i believe a crema sauce, but not 100% sure what it was. Me and my fiance, shared two dishes. We ordered the camarones gratinados, which is grilled shrimp in a cheese sauce for $14.25. It was delicious and a lot of shrimp. i think the price wasn't made for what you got. We then split the enchiladas bandera for $16.25, which was one chicken, one beef, and one cheese enchilada. They were each very good! We ended the meal with their tres leches for $8.50. I did not really care for it. I've had way better else where however my fiance did like it. It is like night and day when it comes to the food here, and it ultimately is the reason why I am bumping this restaurant review up an additional star. As New York City has lousy Mexican food (all apologies to the Bronx), anytime I can leave the city to try some is always an opportunity I look to seize. This was a restaurant that came up in the Yelp app and figured to give a go at. The restaurant is not too far from Gettysburg, or Harrisburg, or Carlisle. It is in a town called Mechanicsburg, which has plenty of restaurants and shopping. The restaurant has authentic Mexican offerings as well as some other Tex-Mex takes, but once I heard they offer a Horchata, a Queso Fundido, and a Chori Pollo, I was sold on getting all three. Sadly the Fundido is a no fun dido. It is raw and nasty, bland and stomach upsetting, and the chips and dip seem to not work at all with it. I took two bites and promptly called it quits. The same could not be said for the Chori Pollo, which is outstanding. The chicken is lean but has great flavor. Excellent flavor on the chorizo with a great queso layer. The flavor depth of this dish is massive because you get a happy family of flavors in almost every bite. I was practically shoveling this. The Horchata I had, has good balance and is plentiful. Part of me wishes I had a Tamarind drink, but this works well. At least I know I can leave knowing there is some good Mexican here, because in New York City, there is no good finds there. We were hesitant to try out a chain Mexican restaurant since we have a favorite local spot just up the road. However, we decided to give it a shot. The restaurant was packed for a Friday night, but we waited less than 15 minutes for a table for two. There was a huge party that took up most of the tables in the back of the restaurant. Due to this setup, the space to walk in between tables was super tight and hard to navigate. Chips, salsa, and some sort of creamy cheese dip were placed on the table as we sat down. The chips were nice and hot. The salsa is not my favorite, but the cheesy dip was okay. It was like a watered down queso dip. We chose to start with tableside guacamole and super queso to have something to eat with the chips. The tableside Guac is expensive ($15) but you customize what you want added to it (cilantro, onions, jalapeño, tomatoes) and the spice level (mild, medium, hot). We went for no cilantro and mild spice and it was fantastic. Bring cash to tip the person who makes it! The queso dip was a great app - it had shrimp, chicken, and steak in the same kind of creamy cheese dip sauce that came on a sizzling fajita plate. It came with soft flour tortillas as well. We would definitely get both again. We got the Al pastor tacos (pork) and the seafood enchiladas for our entrees. The portion sizes were great for the most part, although the tacos were mostly pineapple and onions and cilantro with a little bit of pork. They were tasty though. The seafood enchiladas were good and full of shrimp. I do wish the entrees came out as hot as the queso and chips did. The rice and beans on the side plate were especially cool in temperature, unfortunately. We got fried ice cream ($10) as a dessert and it was good. I'm used to the fried ice cream coming out hot on the outside, since that's how the restaurants did it in my hometown, but that doesn't seem to be the norm anywhere else. The service was amazing. We weren't expecting much when we saw how busy it was inside, but our server was incredible. She kept our drinks constantly full, was so prompt with bringing more chips for our guacamole and queso, and checking in on us. I've been here a couple of times and find that Plaza Azteca is quite similar to an On the Border in most respects, so if you're familiar with those, you know what you're getting. It's clean and reasonably priced, with reasonably good quality and service. I hear that it's one of the go-to TexMex places in the area, but my bar is a bit higher for really good Mexican-adjacent food having lived for many years in TX and CO. This is a solid family or group choice, especially if there are unknown tastes/tolerances, but there are other restaurants in the area if you want something more authentic. One caution is that your GPS may try to take you a block or two too far down the road. The actual entrance is behind the location and can be a bit awkward to get in and out of if it's busy. read more

I was visiting the area for a conference and was looking for a Mexican meal. I found Plaza Azteca near my hotel on Yelp. The restaurant had a nice street appeal and seemed fairly new and well cared for. The menu was large with lots of choices. I started with a good Margarita, not too sweet. Unfortunately my server was not very helpful with the dinner order; I asked about serving size, not wanting to over order, and based on her suggestion added rice and beans to go with my burrito. When the order arrived, I had enough food for two or three people. I'm sorry to say that the food was uninspiring. The rice was dry, the beans soupy and tasteless, and the burrito was anything but Mexican in flavor. It was bland, not very warm, and also kind of soupy inside. I was hungry and did my best to eat my meal, but I just couldn't enjoy it. I wish Plaza Azteca the best, but food and service need improvement. read more

This has become one of my wife's fav places...which is very surprising bc she is not an adventurous eater (and yes, for her, Mexican food is adventurous). We have been here several times and have enjoyed the food each and every time. We really appreciate the calories being on the menu, however, it isn't very clear as to how those calories are assigned (I.e. is the rice/beans included in that total? )...at least it is a starting point for me to make better choices. The food has always been hot and served quickly. I believe it to be reasonably priced as well. In terms of ambience, it doesn't offer much. However, I'm not there for interior decor class...I want good Mexican food. You can definitely tell it is a former TGI Friday's...especially with the big "F"s as door handles in the exterior. The restaurant and the bathrooms have always been clean. Service has always been impeccable as well. Servers have been very friendly and a good combo of attentive/respecting your peace. Food is always served very fast. You do get tortilla chips with salsa and queso on your table as well. At the least, give it a shot. I'm not going to say it's anything much more than a typical Mexican restaurant, but they do it well. I'm sure we will be back. read more

Real nice Mexican Restaurant on the Pike in Mechanicsburg! As soon as we were seated they brought out the signature chips & Salsa and some Spicy Mayo Dipping Sauce. The wife ordered a combo of two tacos, rice & beans she said the beef in the tacos was a bit salty and the crispy shell was somewhat detracted from because there was some sort of juice on the plate. She did enjoy her frozen Margarita! I had the Texas Fajita it came out sizzling on a cast iron plate the chicken, steak & shrimp were cooked perfectly and had a great taste it also came with a side of rice & beans with sour cream and some chopped tomato salsa and 3 nice flour tortillas and a draft beer to wash it all down! Our Server was attentive and it really took more time to make our choices that it did for them to delivered to our table. We have visited multiple Plaza Aztecas around the state and east coast and have been pleased with the overall consistent experience with each. Unfortunately, this one does not meet the same standards of flavor and quality as the others. Service was friendly and the venue was clean/nicely decorated. Drinks ordered were ok, but a bit expensive for the size ($14 for a very small house margarita on the rocks in a short tumbler). Chips and salsa were good! We ordered the queso dip, which was tasty, but had large chunks of coagulated cheese in it. We had the Carnitas burrito, which was ok. I had the Baja fish tacos (Three tacos were $17.25). They totally lacked any flavor, even the battered fish pieces had no flavor. They were to have a tangy citrus slaw (three strands/pieces of plain cabbage on one of the three) and a spicy garlic lime sauce (couldn't taste it). This was a vast disappointment compared to what our expectations were upon arrival. read more

Sorry. I'm totally unimpressed. After seeing reports that this place delivers good Mexican, I was excited to try it. I should have saved my money and driven into Harrisburg for really good food. Instead, I had to suffer through this. The only positive is we ordered from the parking lot and it was ready to go in 10 minutes. We ordered two things to go. The OMG Nachos. At $14.25 you get about 12 round corn chips (like out of a bag at the store), chicken (a few chunks), bacon (so hard it was difficult to chew), chorizo (I found zero chorizo on my order), refried beans (about 1 T), pico de gallo (tasted like just tomatoes and onions and nothing else), sour cream (there was about 1/4 c blob), guac (about 1/4 c blob), and pickled jalapenos. The chips were meh, the chicken lacked flavor, the bacon tasted good but was hard to chew, the chorizo was missing and was probably the only things that would have given this decent flavor, the pico was terrible . . . you get the picture. It was gloopy and 10 minutes after ordering and getting it home to eat it, the chips were totally soggy from the liquids. My husband ordered the Enchiladas Supreme. For $15.25, he got four small enchiladas: chicken, shredded beef, beef, and cheese. They were slathered with some stuff but didn't look appetizing. He let me have a bite of the chicken and the cheese and neither tasted good. The cheese was stiff and the chicken was bland. The takeout order included a small paper bag of chips (which were very stale and tasted of old oil) and a small container of salsa (that I thought - honestly - was awful). My hubby liked the salsa, but it didn't taste like salsa I ever had eaten and just wasn't my vibe. It seemed a little sweet and had an off putting (IMHO) flavor. I like salsa that tastes of onions, tomatoes, garlic, cilantro, hot peppers, lime, etc. This didn't offer any of that. The price for the entrees was way to high for the quality and the quantity. There are a lot better Mexican restaurants selling much better food for way better prices. This is on my never again list. I'd rather eat at the Bell over this. read more

Decided to try Plaza Azteca since we had never been here before and we wanted Mexican Food. Saturday evening after 7pm and the parking lot was packed and honestly, every time we drive by, it's busy. Upon entering the restaurant the decor is mismatched with greenery, bright paint, wicker lights and chandeliers. The music is very loud and could be turned down a notch or two, its very hard to have a conversation here. I approached the hostess stand and the 3 employees standing there just looked at me. One was wiping menus, one manning the register and another talking to the others. No greeting, no "hello, can we help you?" Just blank stares. I stated to all three we needed a table for 2 and were told it would be 10 or 15 minutes. The wait was relatively fast for a crowded restaurant on a Saturday evening but there are a lot of seats here. We were immediately brought chips and salsa and some sort of other dip (a lime crema perhaps?) Salsa was not too spicy and the other dip was pretty good but a bit runny. We looked over the menu which is huge and has a lot to offer that you won't find elsewhere. Nelson our server was absolutely amazing! He was attentive, never rushed us and was extremely friendly. I ordered a small tropical margarita which was fantastic! My husband had a tall dos xx amber. They do offer great tequilas here like don julio and patron. My hubby ordered a pastor burrito which came with rice and beans and I the enchaladas el jefe which was served on top of rice. Our food came quickly and was hot and fresh. The sauce on my enchiladas was absolutely devine and the meat was tender and flavorful too. Rice was seasoned and cooked perfectly. My husbands burrito was huge and delicious! I ended up bringing half of my dinner home. Prices were a little higher than other Mexican restaurants around but the food was so good we didn't mind! The chips and salsa (and whatever the white sauce is) was really good! The Texas fajitas were nicely seasoned but not cooked to my liking. My sister and I both got the carnitas combo to go. The carnitas was supposed to have cooked onions with it. Both of our orders had no onions included and the meat was basically pork jetty. It was so overcooked, dry and hard. We also ordered chicken nachos. They only gave us about 1 tablespoon of shredded cheese and barely any nacho chips in the metal container. Normally, it has been very good, but today was "off" a tad. The enchilada tortilla shells were very dry rendering the entire entree very dull; the refried beans were terrible; and the worst thing of all was the unsweetened iced tea (tasted like GASOLINE!!!). Not sure of the water source at Plaza Azteca, but compared to DaVinci's (in Hogestown), it made DaVinci's water taste like the ultimate champagne!!! Went here for dinner on Cinco de mayo and was disappointed by the food quality and prep. We were served 2 different types of Enchiladas both prepared the same way. Semi warn meat wrapped in an uncooked tortilla then covered in sauce, cheese and a little onion. Who does this? Enchiladas should be prepared with meat, cheese and enchilada sauce wrapped in a tortilla then baked and then topped with more sauce, cheese and toppings. This is our second visit to a Plaza Azteca and we won't be back. read more
